6.0 / 6L80 Sourcing

Hi All,

I am looking for a complete 6.0L and 6L80 swap by the first of the year. Other projects have dictated that I cannot begin the process until then, but I have decided to start gathering parts and planning. I have one big question about all of these swaps; where are you all getting your swaps from? Is it unreasonable to think that I can find a complete dropout with wiring and PCM/ECM in the upper midwest?

Craigslist and word of mouth

6L80E means a newer engine so get out your checkbook. A common 01-07 6.0/4L80E will be quite a bit more reasonable

Re: 6.0 / 6L80 Sourcing

Yeah, I kind of figured it would be a few bucks. Honestly, I am finally making enough to be able to afford the swap, and do it properly.

Since I last posted, I found a couple of 5.3 and 6.0 6L80 2WD dropouts for between $2,500 and $6,000.

I really think that the six speed is the way to go. I've had the car for about, oh... 14 years now. So, I don't feel bad spending money on it. It's not going anywhere. But I also would prefer not spend foolishly on it.

Has anyone used car-part.com successfully?

Absolutely... type it into your browser, select what you want, it'll either be there or it won't. If it is, instant success. Works every time. Furthermore, on more than one occasion, I have purchased the parts that I found that way; so I'd say, not only does the site work, but also, at least SOME of the people who upload their inventory to it, are serious about a transaction.

You get stuff like that at A JUNKYARD.

Things like that come from cars that have been WRECKED.

So help us understand: you would like to schedule for such a vehicle to be WRECKED in your part of the world, sufficiently seriously for the vehicle to be unrepairable, in such-and-such a time frame? And that you should be notified immediately upon occurence? Good luck with that.

It'll either happen or it won't. You'll either come across it or you won't. You'll either be the one standing at the counter with Mr Green, or somebody else will. Nothing you can do (short of getting out there and wrecking an appropriate vehicle yourself) will have any effect on when that day might come. You'll just have to wait for it. You'll either have Mr Green on that day or you won't. Start saving him up now. Check sites like car-part.com every day and be ready to pounce.

Re: 6.0 / 6L80 Sourcing

Really...???

Ok, I guess I deserved that for not being more specific. Here, let me expand on my previous post:

I would like to "schedule" this swap for sometime in early 2012. Since I would like to have what I need on hand when I start, I am beginning my search now.

I have contacted a few of the advertisers on car-part. Unfortunately, I'm not getting any feedback from them. So, I am wondering what other people's experiences have been (kind of like a review or opinion of the service). That is all.

With respect to money, that's not an issue; I can finally afford to do this and do it right. This doesn't have to be a budget build, but the more I can get for my hard earned cash, the better. So, we'll leave it at that.

I am also not at all opposed to shipping via LTL from anywhere in the country, and have a loading dock at my disposal. So, my search is "limited" to the lower 48 states. I'm willing to bet that in the next six months that somewhere in the contiguous US, someone will total a Silverado or Sierra 2500 or 3500.

Now, the question is, am I better off trying to find what I want on car-part, or going to my local salvage yard and paying them their "finder's fee"?

I'm still pretty curious about some of your experiences, if you'd be willing to share.

Re: 6.0 / 6L80 Sourcing

got mine which is a LQ4 4l80e for 500 bucks off a friend

if its a 6l80 then your looking at a L92 engine definatly some bucks but you can get a LQ4 block and a set of L92 heads and get best of both worlds and if your not going all out why not go with a six speed it would be more fun in the long run in my opinion Im going from a 6 speed to auto because I will have alot of track time

Re: 6.0 / 6L80 Sourcing

I found a 6.0 and 6L90E from a 2010 Chevy G3500 van. I'm almost certain that since its a van it would have all sorts of goofy configurations for the engine attached stuff... but maybe not. Not entirely sure about that. The price is right, $6k for the dropout. That would get me the engine, trans, ECM, PCM, harness, and accessories. All that and some time with the plasma and TIG and it would "fit right in".

The trans appears to have a deeper pan or so I've read. There is also the oil pan on the engine, but that'll need to be swapped anyway. There is a transmission shop down the street that has been super helpful. They were willing to dish out the pointers when I was rebuilding the 47RE for our Dodge diesel. So, I'm sure they would have some recomdations for this.

D-day is approaching. It seems that the availability and price of the combo that I want is within the range that I'm willing to pay. This should be a fun project.
