Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I need to know. Has anyone here used the B&M Mega Shifter with the 4L60E without problems? I'm Having a hard time figuring out what is wrong and realy don't have the coin to switch everything over to a T-56. It's a good thing we are under a burn Ban right now Cause I'm about to make a Car-B-Q!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I used one with both a TH-350 and a 700R4, which is fairly similar to a 4L60. Unless there was some wiring on the shifter that went to the computer for controlling the trans, I would think you should be able to run that shifter with the 4L60 without any issue.

I was dreading it as well, pretty simple once you get it done. My A/C blows good and cold once again but the engine doesn't like it. Was test driving the other day and it was holding a steady 230 degrees.

Hopefuly can figure out my trans issues soon.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Getting back to the Trans. Finaly got the pressure gauge hooked up and we will see what it is doing. For those of you who are doing this swap with all stock stuff I dont think this will apply to you but if you are modding the engine and trans and are running long tubes I recomend before you install the trans to hook up a permanent gauge to the trans pressure port and tie it up in the engine compartment. it is almost impossible to access the pressure port with everything assembled. I created some new cuss words yesterday but finaly got the gauge hooked up. Now yust waiting for the rain to clear out and go for a drive. Anyone have an Idea of desireable pressures for the 4L60E with a 450 or so HP engine and a 3500 stall converter? I know what stock should be but that does not help much. Anyhoo, Will update soon.
We will find out one way or another. I have my tuner who says the problem is in the trans, and My lead tech who says the problem is with the tune. I am just stuck in the middle getting screwed.....

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Got all my pressures yesterday and had a talk with the techs at transgo. They say all my trans pressures are great and trans is good. Hooked power probes to the ground side of shift solenoid B and watched for signal change. Found that at wide open throttle the PCM will not take away the ground till I take my foot out of the throttle a bit. So, No signal, No shift. Time to make another appt. with the tuner. Geesh!!

Success at last! We raised the rev limiter a bit and gave it a hair more line pressure and now it is good to go. I have begun making call outs!

Seems like they started catching you towards the end of the track. What color are you going to paint it?

May be so, I still got to the finish line first . .
It's going to be painted Claret red metallic tint coat with no decals or stripes. Just emblems.

That's all that matters!

Man, that is going to look sweet with those chrome wheels! How soon before you paint it?

Not sure about when? I have about exhausted my funds for this project and need money coming in instead of going out. Saddly may be 6-9 months from now.....
This is the color and the only wheels that seem to make it pop are chrome IMO.

Oh yeah, I love that color! It almost looks like a candy apple red. And yes, the chrome wheels are a must. That will give you 6 to 9 more months to enjoy the car before you have to take it off the road again

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Thought I would do a little update.
Dealing with the rust around the windshield.

Got everything apart.

A Tow to the body shop.

replacing rusted sheet metal on drivers A-Pillar.

Roof ready for prime.

Wish I could paint the whole thing but the rest will have to wait for more funds...

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Yes, That was how this all got started. I wanted to save the money to paint the entire car but there was this BIG OLE crack in the windshield that was directly in my vision. I knew if I wanted a new glass I was gonna have to deal with the windshield frame. Just didn't think it would go this far. . Oh well. Once this is done I can install the new t-bar and weather strips and not have to mess with them when it comes time to paint the whole thing. Just back tape and go.

I guess this is to be expected with a car 24 years old.

Pics of progress, Houston, We have heat! Picked up this hose assembly from a v6 4th gen to use for angles.

I cut it up to make what I needed.

Needed to shoot the lines down behind the compressor.

The next task is back to ride heith. This is how it sits now. Wheel arch to ground is 26" front And 27.5 Rear.

I put another set of springs in the front over the weekend and now wheel arch is 28" front and rear. Not what I would call the "Four Wheel Drive Mod" but I think it is now sitting at factory heigth.
Concidering Going to a set of Eibach Sportlines to lower 1" on all fours but I fear with the lack of weight in the nose it will sit higher in the front after.

Any advise?

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I put Eibach Sportlines on my car during the LS swap. I've only made a few trips around the block so the springs haven't totally settled yet. The rear is about 1/4 higher than the front and this is without the rear isolators. Ride height is about 27in in the rear and 26 3/4 in the front. I still don't have the hood on yet either, I'm sure the front will come down another 1/4-1/2in once its all settled out. If you want more rake you could always put the rear isolator in.

Yeah, That's why I am a little hesitant. I want it to be level. May be later I will play with the ride height but for now I took care of some safety stuff.

I always hated the fact that the rear wheel studs were so short so it was time to fix this!

Short studs (OE studs )

The solution.

Knockin em out!

Difference in length.

Suckin em in.

Much better, Now it will pass tech for slicks.

I finished up by drilling holes in the lug nut caps. Not too shabby if I may say so myself

Man, those stock studs were really short! Much better now though. I like how you drilled-out the lug nut caps.

I love that colour. I saw a similar colour on a new Mazda and I was seriously considering putting it on the car. Gold emblems and gold anodized style wheels would look amazing I think. But, I am sort of going for a bandit inspired look for the car. I'm torn on colour options really... As I don't want to be just another black T/A.
Thanks for showing the body work pics. Your A-pillars looked worse than mine, so that gives me some hope!

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

All right, next Question.
The 4L60E is pissing me off. It has been broken 5 times now and I am just sick of it. This time its the input sprag. So, my question to you is??????

PRO-BUILT 4L60E for $3000.00

4L80E for????

T-56 for ????

Pros and cons anyone?????

I don't care for the manual trans to be honest, but if it will hold??????

The PRO Built I'm sure would hold for a while ???????

The 80E will not fit????

Any ideas would be helpful as I need to get past mechanicals and move on to paint and body.

I have a T56 Magnum in my car, its rated for 700ft lb of torque.

I had to change to a body mount torque arm though to make it work. (Other than that, it drops in just dandy)

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

This is what I put in my car. http://www.monstertransmission.com/S...on_c_4043.html I got it with a downgraded level two shift package. It hits hard when it shifts. I'd hate to see how the level three package feels. I didn't need the Super Sport package, but I figured it would future proof the trans for me for future mods. I would think it would be much cheaper to go this route than putting a T56 in it. It should be much easier to do as well.

If you go this route, make sure you specify that the transmission be for a car with a torque arm mount. They sent me one from a truck (no torque arm mount). Luckily my torque arm doesn't mount to the trany. It also came with a long shaft for the shifter arm. Luckily I was able to make that work as well. They also sold me either a case or a case and a half of the synthetic trany fluid. I only used half of it! Oh well.

If you decide to stay with an automatic you might want to get ahold of RPM Transmissions, they are very well known for buidling 4l60e's. I haven't personally used them but I know several who have and all have been very happy.

I haven't used them, but Hot Rod did put a Gearstar 4L70 in the crusher behind that 427LSX. Then drove back to California from Indiana, followed by running low 10 second passes repeatedly.

I know it's been a while since I posted anything but I am still saving for paint. I did find out that GM still had a few NEW front fascias left so I picked one up. This will work much better than fixing the old one.
