T56 Magnum in thirdgen?
I want to start on my LS swap soon here, I have the engine all done but i still need a tranny.
I was looking at doing t56 magnum because I want this car to last a long time and be overly reliable.
Ive got 450hp 460tq at the flywheel of my LQ9.
I found a place locally that can get me a t56 magnum for a pretty good price. Will i have any issues installing it?

A T56 magnum is a hybrid trans using the strongest parts for a high powered build
460lb/ft is still well within the range of a totally stock 4th gen T56. The stock clutch is not though

Its not the fact that the 4th gen one isnt strong enough, its more that i dont really want a used, beaten on t56.
Im buying it more for the fact that its new. A t56 is hard to come by alone around here. I was planning on pairing this up with a z06 clutch. Ive seen a lot of people use that for daily drivers.

Keep in mind that there's no torque arm mount on the tailshaft, so you'll need a different configuration for youe torque arm. With any luck, I'll have first hand knowledge in a few months.

Where would you guys recommend a rebuilt t56 from? I just want something good and reliable, something that can take a beating every now and again.

RPM transmissions is a world-class shop. I had my T56 rebuilt there. Magnum is quite a bit more expensive. Either way, you're going to need a liquid cooled credit card.

Re: T56 Magnum in thirdgen?
I vote getting a working T56, and having it gone through and upgraded by someone like TICK or RPM or any other reputable vendor. If you want some extra safety, get a Stage II build and it'll be fine for what youre going to be throwing at it.
The magnum is nice...but Im not sure its worth the extra cost and beating on the tunnel given your application.
Dont get me wrong, if I had a deal on a brand new magnum it would be crossing my mind too!

Re: T56 Magnum in thirdgen?
Well My problem is that im in canada...
So I can go down my street and pick up a t56 magnum for $2895 + taxes....
If I goto RPM for a rebuild, im paying $3145 + shipping + duties + taxes.
and with tick they dont have cores, so I would have to find one. Finding a t56 around here is stupidly hard.
So the T56 magnum option is stupidly cheaper for a superior option. Anyone have any information on how to get a torque arm mount on there? or alternative options?

Re: T56 Magnum in thirdgen?
Like quick trip said, its a good idea to get the torque arm off the tail shaft whn you start making power anyway. BMR trackpak or a spohn torque arm mounted crossmember would be ideal. The bmr setup can be low on clearance, and the spohn crossmember makes exhaust with longtubes difficult. Some including myself have used hawks double hump crossmember and added a torque arm mount to it for the est of both worlds.

unstableaviator also did pretty much the same thing(might have been the one I seen to get the idea).

Re: T56 Magnum in thirdgen?
You may have to make your own crossmember, using something like a jegs torque arm, or one of the other few that have their own mount location seperate from the crossmember will make this easier.
The Magnum will have the shifter location further forwards, more of a stock T5 shifter location, so for a thirdgen install its probably ideal.
Fabrication of the crossmember will be well worth it for the extra strength capability and out of the box new price, I wanted to go this route when I needed the trans for my 240sx, but the further forward shifter location would have put my shifter under the radio, for a thirdgen its awesome.
