Broke into the 12s finally
Well on a last minute call to head to the track this morning with my friend bring his srt 10 ram I was able to break 12s..barely. I did a handful of passes today, track conditions were better than last time and it was full 1/4. I didnt prepare at all for this track day and had my sub box still in the back, back seats loaded with crap from work.
The turnout was a nice mix of cars for test n tune, a few stangs, civics, corvette zo6, 5th gen camaro,a nasty big turbo 90's rx7,2 bmws, and a ram 1500 and chevy silverado both new,and a nice merc amg 63.
My first few passes were exactly what my best time was last year hitting 13.4s and slowly dialing back my launches softer and shifting violently i was hitting 13.1s consistently. Ran my friends srt 10 ram for fun and had a laugh as i literally peeled tire almost the hole pass and he beat me doing a 13.3. Next pass I hit 13.0*sigh* ..I felt good about that pass and thought that shouldve been the goal. So I was talked into taking a break for lunch..and give the car a full hr cool down. And then came the final run and was also a solo run.I staged and came out the gate..spinning top of 1st..
..shifted to 2nd and chirped again..double
(..went through 3rd and just got into 4th and I thought here comes another 13.0 slip.As i pulled up to the both, the kid hands me slip and says I need to start wearing my helmet again if Im going to do passes like that again.I look down and see 12.8@115mph! Ha I went straight home which lead to some seperate fun for the highway pulls me and my friend had with his srt10 picking on civics and a few porsches.

Yea Im shocked I didnt miss 3rd or had it grind like I normally do trying to get my shifts quicker. But granny shifting it and not spinning improved my times and mph so I adjusted my habits.Im learning more each time I go to the track,I dont have much experience or been really taught the do's and donts for drag racing but the fun of it is addictive.

What rear gears do you have? Some runs you didn't even make it out of 3rd gear. I think you would pick up quite a bit of time and find it easier to launch with more aggressive gears.

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
Stock 9 bolt 3.27.Im looking into changing gears also and getting 3.90 in there or 4/11 from 9bolt.com which should wake the car up some.I know once I do gears...it will be more apparent to also get new rubber.
On the runs that I really spun I just ride out 3rd because it was pointless to shift into 4th near the end and it just sounds mean.I got alot of compliments from others as I would open the cutout when i got close to doing my runs and then close it during the return lane.Had them guessing what was under the hood for awhile.

Is this on stock radials? Just curious why you aren't putting a little more heat in those tires?
Congrats on the 12.8!!!

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
I was doing consistent 113-115mph passes. And yes..putting heat to the all season falken 912 245/50r/16 would slow me down and spin hard with 2nd and 3rd shifts.
Gears/tires/monster clutch and rebuild the t56,ls1 brake swap are the next mod steps i want to take.I dont think I have a lack of power issue at the moment lol

Thanks guys for the compliments. I want to start taking more vids from outside the car but around here that grabs wayy too much attention for the random highway pulls ive encountered.

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
glad you saw the light. my dad shared that knowledge with me early on in life and i never forgot it. in high school i would laugh at the dudes heating up their street tires for a launch, and then blow them off the line and show them my tail lights for 1/4 mile.
Re: Broke into the 12s finally
Gears, tires, and a better clutch will wake that car up, and probably put it in the high 11s with traps in the high teens where it should be. The 115 trap is slow for your mods and power, but a lot of that is in your poor gearing and lack of traction. Even without those parts that 60' can be improved.

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
Not sure I quite agree that the 115mph is slow..or slow for the mods given.Being a low compression lq4 with a small cam and slightly larger exhaust its making the power right where I was told it should be. Most cars at my track running 113+mph were easy low 12 second cars with decent traction. My biggest problem is my 60' which alot of it is my tire and my launch and I knew it would be.Im taking it fairly easy for now and got wot after the 60.I dont have the confidence in the rearend to support wanting to cut my 60' down yet till I have taken a closer look at it..and apply some upgrades. As it stands Im happy..shows the car has plenty potential once everything is inline and i can dial in launching it more comfortably i see no reason why i cant hit high 11s with the stereo still in the back lol

Its early yet. You have plenty of fun ahead working down the numbers on that car. Good mod plan, have at it

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
True you can always find a lil more power if you spend hours tuning but Im not trying to squeeze every drop of power right now.I hit the goal of 400,I hit the goal of 12s.Now I just want to go out and enjoy that as i tend to other things that need attention.Getting faster times wont matter if i break the car or cant stop a car after doing 115mph lol.
Its hard to not look into mods that add more power for the money i want to spend but im heavily leaning towards doing bigger brakes first like ls1 fronts atleast, save up for new clutch and rebuild the t56,new gears and probably anything else back there in need of freshening up,spare rims so I can have track tires and my all seasons.and just replace regular wear/tear suspension parts.

nice job, I agree, get some dot drag radials then some new gears and you should be in the low 12s easy!

Exactly what I was thinking Cam-
Im starting to read up on what is best to fit with the gta wheels front and back that doesnt break the bank and give a healthy boost in stopping power.

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
Yup Ls1 brakes work well and fit more wheels which is VERY nice. Rears not so easy though. Need a different rear brake option if you want 15" wheels. There are some "mods" for fitting up LS1 calipers for 15"s but they spook me a little. That said a 16" 50 series stickies will take you far, dont cost much, and they fit

Re: Broke into the 12s finally
Compression isnt that high..your thinking lq9.My lq4 stock was 9.5:1,still used stock head gasket and only milled the 243 heads .030 which put me around 10.6-8:1 iirc.Keep in mind I have an added 200lbs stereo sitting in this car.Shes not a light bird lol
Re: Broke into the 12s finally
200 added pounds of dead weight? Yeah, that might throw the numbers off a bit. Do you know your raceweight? 400rwhp at 3500-3600lbs should still trap at least high teens.

LOTS left in it for sure. Get a tire and a gear in that car. Should be busting bottom 12s with that combo driving proper.
