Thanks! Yeah all I know is that we pulled the engine out of an '87 Chevy truck that was sitting in a field, lol. We are re-painting it and everything, so I will keep you guys posted

have fun, and don't cut any corners!

whats the plans for the 350? build wise?

hope you have a decent stall and some rear end gears, that alone made my 350 swap a whole new animal.

Well, when it comes to the 350, I have a couple ideas. I was thinking Aluminum Heads by Hooker, an Edelbrock high rise intake manifold, a Crane Camshaft (basically the whole valve assembly by Crane) Ross forged pistons, an 850 Holley Carb, a rear end Posi-Track, and The Rear Gear at 3.75 lol

That sounds like a good plan. What all is being done to the block?

Re: The 92 RS, Engine Pics

is that a virgin block or was it bored before? It's hard to tell in the pics but those cylinder walls look like that have some pretty bad rust on em, did the machine shop tell you how much they're gonna have to punch it out? Hopefully the rust isn't too deep.. even if it is 350 blocks can be had for $50 or so all day long so it wouldn't be that big of a loss..

I'm not sure what's being done to the block yet, I'm gonna take it to the machine shop here in the next couple of days to get it checked out, but I'll let you know!

I'm not exactly sure if it is a virgin block or not. I have literally no history of the engine besides the fact that it has 30,000 miles on it. I haven't communicated with the machine shop yet, but I don't think the rust is very deep, because it only sat outside for like two weeks on an engine stand. I'm pretty much waiting on my dad to decide on a machine shop

hopefully it's just surface rust and isn't pitted. Do you have anything to measure the bore with? If not take a look and see if there's anything stamped on top of the pistons you took out, something along the lines of ".030". Hopefully it's never been rebuilt before and still has its factory bore. It looks like it will defently need to be bored, with any luck there's enough metal left to get the holes cleaned up.

What's your budget for the build and what kind of power output are you shooting for? Will it be a daily driver or a weekend toy? Will it need to pass emissions? Let us know what you plan to do with it and we can help you select parts for the build!

Well, my grandparents told me as long as I maintained a 4.0 and went to college they would fund me for the car, so I have an unlimited budget according to them, lol. and It will be a daily driver, and yes it will need to pass emissions. I plan to basically just drive it around like any sixteen year old would, but I want some serious power behind it
My grandpa builds hot rods and he has been helping me out, but do you guys have any ideas of parts for the build?

hmm... sounds like its just coming along fine and dandy.. about the 4.0 gpa though.. Man its hard to maintain. I have a 3.98 no honors/gt classes and im 16. my deal with my parents is i can build it with what i have (a wrecked91 parts car w 25k miles) and use it to drive to school but i have to build it. I have to engine swap it and paint it so0n enough interiors pretty much done already..but right now im out of town using a wi-fi connection at a campground and am about 1500 miles away from home lol.. sucks. so no work on the car for a while but yours looks like its coming along awesomely. any pointers on taking the engine out? :-D

I actually get to give my first piece of advice! Well, if you don't know the parts to your engine, I would label everything you detach, and take TONS of picture for documentation. Once everything is un-hooked, drop your drive shaft, and then drop your transmission. It's a three person job for me, because we used an extending ladder underneath the car and had a person on each end hold it up, then we had another person unbolt the tranny, and it set right into the ladder, then we lowered it and pulled it out, then I would just get an engine lift and pull 'er out! lol

How many miles does your 305 have on it? Yeah, what kind of an engine were you wanting to put in?

Blah mines gonna be a simple drop in compared to what your doing. at least you have the knowledge of doing all this there with you.. I don't, lol my dad owned a body shop at one time and never worked on engines so I'm sorta in the dark. Its just gonna be the exact same engine going on in there.. except from a 91 rs to a 92 rs. i just plan on taking everything out of my engine compartment because i want to respray it also so i hope everythign turns out well

oh and the original engine in there has 155k miles and is burning oil pretty bad.. i guess some one didnt change the oil to often...

It's a very pretty car! It looks really promising. No matter what it looks like now, it will be amazing once it's finished. What else is that in the garage there?

how strick are emissions regulations around your area? I know around here they open the hood, if they see a carb on a car that didn't come with one you fail. Basically if your car came with fuel injection it better still be fuel injected, even if it passes emissions just fine with a carb.. which I never understood... Make sure you find out your local regulations before you buy parts.. it can get expensive fast.

I'm not too sure about emissions, but the two previous owners drove the car in the same county with a carb, and they had no problems.

I'm having a blast with it, and due to the fact that I'm unemployed, 15, and it's summer-I have plenty of time to dedicate to the project, lol

I dont think my sign will pull up but i got a good build for a street car setup runnin a 350 with a t5. as it sits right now i bet id run high 13's but once i put a new rear end gear ill hit high 12's maybe mid 12's not sure. and this is totally street. my setup is...

flat top pistons

.510 lift cam, 244 duration (get a roller if you got $$)

stock crank and rods

high vol oil pump

gear drive (id prefer chain)

64 cc world product sportsman 2 heads (2.02 in, 1.60 ex) 200cc intake runners

1.5 roller rockers

edelbrock alum performer rpm air gap intake

600cc carb (650 is better for this setup) i wouldnt go much higher if only streetable

high torque starter

i dont think i forgot any other details....

I ran mid to high 12s on a my stock TPI 350/700r4 with 210,000 miles. The ONLY things done were a 100 shot of nitrous and headers with SLP exhuast. I did blow it up but now Im just making it more nasty. Suspenison was stock, stock weight with drag radials..that was it.

Well, we took the 350 to a machine shop only to find out it was cracked....luckily, they have a 350 block for sale for around 150-175 dollars...should I go for it?

What kind of shape is it in? If it needs a rebuild I wouldn't pay more than $50.

It needs a total rebuild. It needs to be prepped for rebuild...the guy says he needs to charge us $950 dollars aside from buying the engine itself. I don't know if nine hundred and fifty is an accurate price...I feel like I'm getting jipped a little bit there...he is dipping it, boring it, basically everything to prep it for a rebuild. He is giving me nothing but the block, no rods, piston, nothing, and is charging 950...thoughts?

Take your money and run somewhere else. thats my opinion. you'l be able to get a full complete other engine from another car for that Or even get a whole nother car! Also, Take it to another shop. it seems that one just wants to RIP you off.

Too much coin for just a cleaned shortblock. Im looking at a 350 for mine and its complete with carb to oil pan and I'm only paying $300 for it. Then doing the same as you and having a credible machinist to check it. but hey man, figure it this way, you win some you lose some and another thing to keep in mind: don't be dollar-wise and penny foolish. I hope everything goes well, when you bore it are you gonna make it a stroker aswell?

Yeah, I felt as if we were being charged entirely too much. I don't think I have a credible machinist. When I bore it out I would love to get a balanced stroker kit...a 383

That'd be sick. Be sure to check Craigslist in the auto parts or even the cars & truck section for an engine or donor car. sometimes you get nice deals. and become friends with the son's of the south, they sometimes have chevy parts for cheap prices

if you go that route make sure you get your rotating assembly first so the block can be clearanced

Re: The 92 RS, Engine Pics

We decided (mostly in part to this forum's input) to run to a different machine shop because I think we have all agreed I am getting completely ripped off. I'll be sure to check Craigslist for parts etc, and I'll keep you guys updated!

Thanks fellas
