i've gotten a bunch of conflicting answers and i just want to figure it out
"the stupidest question is the one unasked"

the iroc-z28 is just a package... and its better then the regular z28. It has different performance i think and different looks and such a little.

according to wikipedia (which never lies) there was an IROC-Z28 which housed the 305 TPI motor and there was also the IROC-Z which housed the 350 TPI motor...then when you go down the line there was the camaro ls which was your basic touring package complete with a carb'ed 305 motor and then you got down to the base model camaro which had a V-6
so from highest to lowest the ranks were:
1. IROC-Z
2. IROC-Z28
3. Camaro LS
4. Camaro
(there were other models in there too such as a the berlinetta which i would have to personally place right below the Z28)

wikipedia, hum, not a great resource. An IROC's an IROC regardless of motor. My 85 IROC-Z, for example, was originally a 305, carbed car (LG4). Perhaps the confusion arises from the fact that from 85-87, IIRC, the IROC was a package for the Z28, while it became a model in later years. My 85 is badged with Z28 on the quarters and bumper. Later, that was changed to IROC-Z.Originally Posted by racerx520

A Z28 is always an IROC but an IROC is not always a Z28.
I have an IROC with an LO3 (so I dont have an IROC-Z Z28, but just an IROC package on my RS motor) whereas my buddy has an IROC Z28 which has the motor upgrade (tpi)
So IROC-Z - RS But with ground effects and wonderbar (various motors)...
IROC-Z Z28 - IROC-Z, but with TPI motor
Sorry, I H8, that confused me a bit--hey, I'm old. Are you saying that an IROC is an RS with ground effects and Wonderbar?Originally Posted by I H8 WWD

Here's from the White Book:
...the IROC featured lower trim height and center of gravity, special front struts, springs and jounce bumpers, Delco-Bilstein rear shocks, special rear springs and stabilizer bar, higher-effort steering, increased caster, front frame rail reinforcement...16X8 aluminum wheels, fog lamps, numberous chassis tweaks, and unique graphics. The IROC was not a separate Camaro model [at this time]; rather, it was an option available with Z28 models.
In 85, three motors could be had in an IROC: the LG4, the L69, and the LB9.

Wow, re-read Camaro Tech Data....DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL IM SAYING.
I guess when I started here at TGO whoever told me a Z28 is always an IROC-Z and an IROC_Z isnt always a Z28 is wrong...some Z28's are not IROC-Z's as stated in the 87' Data
So Ill edit my post above. Sorry guys.

well heres a little info as well
my 89 IROC-Z28 RPO CODE SAYS Z28
HAD 15X7
DRUM REARS
305 tbi
NO POWER WINDOWS
FRONT SWAY BAR IS THICKER
HAS WONDER BAR
SHOCKS DID NOT SAY BILSTIEN UNLESS THEY WERE CHANGED, AND I DOUBT THAT, SINCE IT ONLY HAD 45K ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT.
it was a very BASIC IROC-Z

You have an IROC (short for IROC-Z). An IROC is an IROC-Z; an IROC-Z is an IROC. That's as simple as it gets.Originally Posted by wulfgar the pen

From 85-88, IIRC, the RPO for the IROC (or IROC-Z if you prefer) was B4Z; 89+ is Z28.

to my understanding 85-88 iroc-z was a package that could be added to the z28 but the iroc-z was not available alone. 89+ they dropped z28 and changed it to iroc-z meaning that essentially iroc-z was a z28 no matter what

well thanks a ton guys for clearing it all up, for some reason i thought there was a difference between iroc and iroc-z,
now i know its just iroc-z and z28, so once again thanks

look at your RPO code and if it shows Z28 than it is a IROC-Z 28

This topic was beat to death before. I am not exactly sure of years but this is the gist...
82-84 you could get a Z28, no IROC option.
85 (or maybe it was 86) through 88ish? you could get a Z28 and ADD the IROC option, soooo you could have a Z28 or an IROC-Z28
Somewhere along the line GM "says" they dropped the Z28 and made the IROC-Z. Now some will argue this is NOT a Z28... BS it is. RPO Z28 is still there but I am not reviving this issue. When the IROC went away GM "reinstated" the Z28 model in 1990.
Clear as mud? I thought so.

Cant check, all RPO codes have washed off and the center console lid was broke when i bought the car, there was no sticker underneath it.Originally Posted by gscz28

But I HAVE AN IROC-Z...I know that for a fact. So like stated above that 89 IROC-Z's were Z28's, I have an IROC-Z Z28.
Cool, for 3 years I thought I had just an IROC-Z.

Which is the same thing as a Z28, respectively, for your model year.Originally Posted by I H8 WWD

My knowledge is that from 1985-1987 they were IROC-Z28's and from 1988-1990 the Z28 was takin out of the option code and they were called just IROC-Z's. Also the IROC is an optional performance package on top of the Z28 option, but like i said form 88-90 the Z28 didnt have anything to do with the IROC.
