My New Project. 84 Camaro
Well, the title says 84 camaro, they claimed an 85 camaro.
Its a 2.8 car, with a primed hood...

I want the z body kit, but everyone else is saying not to. So i may not.
On the agenda for now is,
clean up the interior, and get the sound system going while cleaning up the engine bay, and get the 2.8 to its top condition, that i can
new tranny, cause this one only has 1st and 2nd.
Re-prime/maybe paint the hood
then go for upgrades, like getting a Z spoiler
Paint one day
and 350/LT1 swap one day

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Well today, i got the cluster pulled, to see whats up with the speedo, and the steering wheel installed. Its not correctly done, cause i couldnt get my retainer ring back straight, and a regular snap ring wouldnt work either, so i held down the steering lock ring down, till i got the steering wheel on, then tightened the nut.
Now, i need to figure out this speedometer.

Wow what a great car you got there. It doesn't look that bad for the year it is. It would make a great car for anyone once you start giving some TLC

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
thats what i'm thinking.. I really wish it was a V8 car, but it sounds good like it is, and i think i can get this one running decent, but one day, it will be a 350 car.
I'm hoping to get the interior clean this week. I'm going to pass on the interior pulling for now, but i'll probally pull the carpet and replace it one day.
I really need to find a parts car near here, that i can start robbing..
i need vents, and sail panels, and some hatch trim...and emblems.

Nice looking project. I wouldn't swap to z-style bumpers and gfx as you rarely see 82-84 sport coupes anymore. Nice find

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
yeah,i know that spoiler is pretty ugly.
I think it is a grand prix spoiler. I havent ever seen another sports coupe either. The only thing i'm considering now is a z spoiler. cause i like spoilers, and this ones ugly.
I'd really like to have an iroc hood too... But, right now i'm focused on running and driving. Right now, i have the gauge cluster out, trying to figure this speedo problem out, took the crappy falling apart sunvisors off, I'm going to make some i think. I need to fab some sail panels, and then find some vents.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Yeah the appearance isnt what i'm really shooting for yet. I've got a line on a tranny right now. Will the tranny from a S10 fit? its got the same V6 and all in front of it.
If it does, i've got a free one from a running when parked S10.
Then, i'll be on the search for a speedo cable, and interior parts. I've got the door handle ordered, and now i'm trying to find vents, and a dash. I've got two people with camaros, i'm waiting on responses from about some interior parts, and maybe another hood. Then, after that, i'll be searching for center caps, and a spoiler.
Does anyone know if you can lightly sand that plastic stuff in the back, and paint it?
If you can, i'm going to paint it tommorrow most likely. I've got the radio trim out now, that i'm going to metailic red. If it works out nice, i'll do the rest of the trim that way.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
i wish i coulda got a v8 car. but i think i'll have fun with the V6. I still think my 305 deal, will still be alright. a stock motor for about 100 bucks, and with the K member. i'd just like to cam it, and put a 400 crank and whatnot with it, so i can say its a 305 motor, and on the outside, it'll look like one..

My camaro also orginally looked like your but decided to have in memory of my first thirdgen. So what I did is install the front bumper and had it painted. And as soon as I finish doing my engine swap. I will finsih doing the rest of the body kit
I am trying to have the exterior look like my first thirdgen but inside remembering my second thirdgen camaro

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
got the int cleaned out, got rid of the BS rigged wiring for the 4th gen power seat, and took the glasspack off..well it "fell" off cause it wasnt clamped on.. it had a like 1 1/2 adapter to 2 1/2" or so, and not clamped.. and no exhaust hangers, so when i went around this dirt road curve, it swang loose.. Must have been pulling some major G's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsUib4ssZwM
theres the after vid. i intend on a cherry bomb, or a flowmaster to go back.
Found a tranny for it, for free.. just gotta go pull it out an S10.
Got my INT door handle, got the doors working good. Found out i need a new pull bracket for the E-brake,and the speedo needs a new cable, the cable end is pullling out the other end. i may be able to fix it, but i didnt have time today. Also needs a new exhaust hanger by the cat.
Cleaned the carb some today with some carb cleaner, so i think i'll be okay.
Going to get oil change stuff tommorrow, and an air filter, since it dosent have one
and some fuel treatment. when it gets close to empty, it wants to spit and sputter a good bit after you put new gas in it, so hopefully some STP will get it without having to pull the tank.
Lost a center cap in the process of driving it around ,but i'll find another. Now i've gotta find a good donor car to start pulling int parts out, and some weatherstripping, to save me some $$

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
well, i got to the jy yesterday, but couldnt find a dash worth getting, lost my T10 torx screwdriver, so i couldnt get the gauge face off of the decent camaro i found, so i got tried to get it off with a flat screwdriver.. broke the tip on my screwdriver...
so i came home with nothing, and soaked...
I'm going to try and go get the speedometer out of it thursday or so.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
I had the same problem like you. I went to the jy one day to get some spare parts and found a complete set of iroc-z gauges. I was trying to look for the right tool to remove the srcews but could find it. So I decided to ask how much it was it only cost $30 for the the whole gauge set. I decided to come the next day and to my luck some guy broke them. I was thinking to myself why he did that
Keep me updated on your proget. Would like to see how it turns out to at the end

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
got the gauges, and got them in.

the shop,

the ramp setup i'm using. They used to be fork lift ramps that went over a pit for service at a plant my grandpa was the manager at. when it closed, we got the company scraping the place, to cut the ramps off for us.

the consoles out now for cleaning/painting maybe. also getting the ten pounds of crud out the console box and from under it
gonna finish pulling the tranny tommorrow, and then get the other one cleaned up, and maybe even back in!

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
well i broke my camera doing a dirtbike video for a friend of mine, so i wont have any pics up, but anywho...
Got the other tranny out, and the new one in, but we broke the shifter cable taking the tranny out. so we cleaned up and went and got another cable but it was 6:30 before we stoped working anyway
traded my old pioneer for a different one that i liked better. its an old one, but i like it, just an 03 model. Gonna put the console back in tommorrow, and plug up the radio.
I'm gonna pass on painting it for now, cause its only a few screws away if i wanna paint it, and its not the most importat thing right now anyway.
Gonna be driving it around tommorrow hopefully, then we'll see about getting the carb cleaned up

That's cool that you were able to get the trannny exchance with another, like they say one thing less to worry about.
I am sorry to what happen to your camera, hope you get a new one to post picture on you project.
Also it is cool on the space you have to work on you car, really with a lot of space.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
That would be cool having a little shop in your back yard like they say. In fact I was planning of getting a house with a big back yard so that way I could build a little garage to have a lift with a complete air line kit for the use of a compressor and to have my car store inside. But I guess that dream is gonna have to wait.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
well we cant get the TV cable adjusted right,... but i think were gonna just go ahead and pull the motor and tranny. or atleast thats what i wanna do.
I put on new hood lift assists today, and got the hood somewhat adjusted. next is to pull the spoiler and get those holes filled, and start working on the bumper.. Cant pull the motor and tranny out till we get the tranny in the Z71, so it may be a bit. so i'm gonna go ahead and start pittling.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
that black jug is tranny fluid.
I found a 350 with 3970014 casting. bored.030" over
Crane blue racer 300hp cam in the motor, lifters and hardened pushrods
comp roller tip rockers, pete jackson geardrive F/T pistons 1.94/1.50 heads Holley contender intake, no carb i can get pretty cheep with a Comp 270h Magnum cam included for free
Dad dosent have the spare cash at the moment to swing for another project since he's working on his z71 at the time, so i'm gonna see what i can do to get it. Still gonna need to find a 700r4 and about a 2200 stall, but the motor is the best start i can get.. it needs to be "refreshened" since its in his DD, but i want something i can tear down and work on..
what do you think is a fair price for the motor i described?

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Put on the new hood lift supports earlier this week and got the hood lined up right from front to back, but now its rubbing on the drivers fender, and gapped on the pass. anyone know how to adjust it?
also,
I pulled the front clip earlier today and gonna work on getting it sanded up and bondo'd smooth with the stress cracks, then figure something out about the foglights. Also pulled that puke spoiler off it, and its got 8 holes in it!. gotta weld those up.. then put some more in it for the wrap-around spoiler. I'm gonna try and get the 90-92 one cause i like the fat one better. probally fill the 3rd brake light hole. or snag the wiring.
Also found some aluminum aftermarket louvers on a car, that someones driving. wants 50 bucks.. good price?
Talked to the guy i've been waiting to catch up with that builds motors.. said he's got enough in the shop laying around that we can build a right nice setup that will move... free of charge for the parts from him, i've just gotta put some labor in around the shop
not a bad deal i dont think. Gonna go look at some stuff on monday afternoon. once i get that, i might even see if i can take the car down to his shop to do the swap, so it'll be easier to work on. i know he had an extra lift bay last time i was there a few weeks ago.
Now to find a 700r4 that'll work, and i'm going to town.
Cant wait to get something going for it! Wahoooo!

That's cool that you are deciding to the V8. On the engine it sound like a good way to start with on you are.
And on the hood make sure you got some rubber molding that go on the fender to help the hood from hitting the fender and also can help you with the aliment. I had that problem everytime I though I had my hood in the right spot it would hit the fender until I put those rubber molding it help me alot

hmm, i dont remember if those pieces are on there or not, but i'll look tommorrow. Thanks!
game plan for tommorrow is try and get something going in the engine direction, so i'm gonna go by the shop and see if the guys there. if he isnt, or if he is, after work i'm gonna start by getting the bumper stripped down to just the bumper and get the headlight panel out and stuff. Then probally will order the panel later this week.
I'm gonna try and get the bumper sanded down in the major stress cracked areas and then decide what i'm going to fill it with tuesday. i'll be free tuesday so i should have a little progress towards the bumper. Then hopefully by the end of the week, my dad will have his welder [or maybe were splitting it] and i'll trying to get some arrangements for getting the motor out..

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
I've been told by my motor/race guy that the 700r4 wont hold up to much more than a few punches on the gas with any motor in front of it.
so he's trying to get me to the th350.

i know i need that. is there anything else?

Skipped reading the replies but the Z body kit doesn't fit on the car without a bit of work. The side skirts don't fit on the rockers properly and need to be supported somehow.
and as far as the 700R4 goes. My dad has one behind his nova (cause he wanted to keep overdrive but not go to a electric th-400) I think he spent $2,600 on trans and a 2200-2500 stall torque converter, it's rated for 700 horses but a lot of people are saying they are holding up to 800 hp applications.

well yeah thats the thing. for a budget build its not economical to put a 700r4.
right now i'm figuring 100 for that kit, then the tranny cost, but there a dime a dozen around here. then shift kit, and shifter..

^ You will need a driveshaft from a 82 or 83 F body because your driveshaft will be to short or you can have one built. The shifter you have now will work but the gear indicator will be off by a gear,no big deal. I used that B&M swap kit also but you have buy the torque arm isolator or make your own from your old isolator.

i'll make one from the old isolator. i was reading that earlier, and i read about the driveshaft.
its getting a ratchet and shift kit though, whatever tranny it gets.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Well got the front clip dissambled. the little bits left of the foglights and the headlight panel out. I've gotta get a checking accout with a debit card so i can start ordering stuff. Plan to get the headlight panel ordered by my uncle this weekend regardless. Most of the front clip is salvageable, since it was hit by a deer. I discovered the bumper is a reman. pretty cool it read "Made by the colonel's in the good old usa"
I'm trying to decide if i want to put foglights in it and make my own brackets, or find some factory ones.. or put a grille over it.
But, i did rough up the bumper a little with some 220 grit today, but i was told i need to flap wheel it pretty good, then 2 part epoxy it so it'll flex.
Still no progress on the motor yet.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
well i picked up some self etching primer today and i've got some sandpaper so this week i'm gonna be back on the camaro. Im gonna get the holes on the rear welded up from the old spoiler and then sand and prime that portion of the car. Nothing new on the motor yet. been crazy busy doing everything else. I'm ordering the headlight panel tonight from ebay. im skittish of the thermo plastic, but we'll see. Tommorrow i'm going by a local body shop where a guy said he normally gets bumpers for 80 bucks and can sell it to me at his price of about 50. So depending on his price he can get, determines if i'm going to expoxy up my bumper or not.
Hopefully tuesday i can get over to the local yard and pick up a couple headlight buckets since two of mine arent in great condition. Also i can start sanding and painting my buckets. Tuesday i should be around the shop some and get something done towards it.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Well i made the decision today to stick with the 350. i'll keep the money instead of putting the 383 stuff in, put it into the intake/heads..
Today, i got the rest of the pistons out, and the crank out.. the crank looks okay.
The dropped valve grenaded the top of that piston of course but the cyl walls dont look too bad. After talking today we decided to go to about .040 over. he thinks we have some pistons in the shop that are 40's.
Tommorrow, i'm going to go down for a lil while and get the cam out and drop the block in the vat. He said we wont fire up the gas, but just let it sit till monday and then we'll see what we got. Also tommorrow we'll press out the rods and get them cleaned up a bit. I'm excited to get something done on it! wahoo

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Didnt really get time to work on my motor today.. Got up and hit the JY and got the spoiler i wanted.. the 3 piece..
wanted the grid tails but couldnt get the hatch open. they want 40 for the set and they are like 250 in ecklers.. i believe i'll be back to get those tommorrow. just gonna crow bar the hatch.. Anywho. I've been dancing like a lil kid cause my headlight panel came today
so tommorrows camaro day. Gonna get the front end put back on.. and get the stuff to fix the bumper..the 2 part epoxy.
After i got home i hit the shop and helped assemble a powerglide. The guy said he'd see that the cam got out and in the vat cause he'll be out of town tommorrow working on a 762 in a dragster. But he wants it in the tank so monday we can see what we got.
Heres the pics of my merchandise..

the clears comming off a lil bit and theres a little rough spot on the top of the left side piece.. i wanted the nice green one, but nooo.. cant get the hatch off..
New pics of the car tommorrow with the small updates on it that i have.. and hopefully the new tails, and some motor shots, if its not in the vat.

That's cool on the progress that you are doing on your car. On the tail lights ithat sounded like a great deal but sometimes better offers come in the future
Like for me today I was able to get a Iroc grill from a fellow member for $20. On the grill I have been waiting for like about a year until I got it.
Keep me posted on the progress you do to your camaro.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
we'll see what happens.. i'd like to put a grate grille on it and foglights..
Got my front clip on. went to the dragstrip yesterday and checked out some 3rd gens instead of the yard. maybe go over this weekend. But the front clip went on okay.. got it semi lined up. had to straighten some brackets and left some of the screw clips on the other headlight panel and had some left over. haha but, got it on. broke my hood latch cable though.. more money. yay. Ah well.. also got the rear decklid sanded so we can bondo it. if it dosent hold, we'll go back and weld it.
Nothing new on the motor. more info on that tommorrow.

Re: My New Project. 84 Camaro
Got the center of my 3 piece spoiler on. wahoo. got the other holes filled, and sand them down tommorrow and probally give it a skim coat.
Also got the carpet out, all the seats out and the upper half of the console. I put the drivers seat back in to drive it. Had a big day, but didnt even get started till 2:00 or so. Tommorrow got about the same about of time so we'll see if i can get the sides on. Now, can i change the seat rails on a power seat to make it manual?
