Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Haven't updated in awhile, motor has an oil leak but I know where it's coming from, and a coolent leak and I can't seem to find it. But the good news is I got hired on at my local autozone, I really impressed with my knowledge around the car, even said that in his 16 years of hiring he had never seen anyone answer so many questions in detail like I have, most the time people can't answer half them. But besides that I'm also semi retiring the camaro till warmer weather. I'm buying my grandmas impala from her. It use to be my grandpas pride and joy before he passed away, it's an 07 burgandy impala, with the 3900 v6 and auto trans. My grandpa bought it in 08 I believe with only like 30k miles on it, as it sits now the car only has like 63k miles on it, and Lot are from me from when I was putting the motor in my car. My payments a month are only $270 with $80 a month insurance. Alot better gas mileage, alot better in snow and cold weather

one thing i can say after a year working at autozone, don't work here if you like working on cars, i did, and now i hate cars, not just crappy ones (90% of customers) or *******s who know it all (retards who don't) but also nice cars, because the people who usually own them are f*cking clueless and end up screwing them up, but your coworkers should all be pretty cool fairly nice people, if you have any trouble with anything hit me up with a question, i made manager in a very short time lol

When you get a chance, clean your engine up good and add a bit of leak dye to the radiator. Get yourself a black light bulb and you'll find your coolant leak in no time (unless it's inside the engine...
).
Funny, I've been trying to get into both AZ and Advance since 2004... Not sure I would want to work at the AZ I normally go to though... Those people have about as much intelligence as a fence post, combined. I'm going to have to start applying again in the spring once the 88 is going again. Grocery store isn't cutting it with 16 hour weeks anymore...

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Ill fit in fine at my local autozone, I know every employee there and they know me by name, it's sad when you can call and just tell them your name and they know who you are and what you drive. I get $8 an hour which isn't bad for starting off; and our gm is good friends with me aswell, when he say my app and had a free spot I was on of the first, also the fact that I kept impressing him with knowledge and being there early for the interview was a big plus for me. Pretty good when the gm tells you that you pretty much have the job at the end of the interview when he's interviewed 6 people so far and I was the last one. I'm excited though, first job
. And Dan the leak is external, It's coming from around the radiator as I can see a small puddle under the radiator support when I come out of school and go to get in

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
its been really good. im really starting to enjoy it and am starting to get the hang of it, they are already talking about promoting me to a manager position. well as far as the car goes, i havent been driving it alot since i got the impala, but when i do it never disapoints me, my starter bendix is going out so i need to drop the starter and take it in and get it replaced since its under warantee and also replace my flywheel. iv got a friend whos going to adjust my valves and tweek the motor alittle bit to get it running in better shape for me. i also still need to replace my speedo cable. funny thing is, last wednesday it was around 55 here with is really warm and i decided to take my camaro to work. well i got in it and started on my way to work, messing around alittle bit and did alil burnout in front of a cop that i didnt see and got pulled over, now i say this is funny because i didnt get a ticket because the cop thought my car sounded good and the burnout was cool lol. so i got a verbal warning
. once it warms up alittle bit im going to get back on the car and get it back to where i need too, im also looking for a new GM front nose, and new fenders, im sending my baby into the paint shop to be completely stripped down to metal, all the metal work and body work done and repainted with new seals. i plan on keeping my car for a LONG time and i want it to stay around with me as long as it can, im also on the look out for a new posi rearend with 3.73 gears.

Yeah the pay could be higher but minimum wage is 7.25 so I'm making higher than that. My car got nominated as one of car of the month, voting is still going on

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
got a question, would leaving the computer in place and hooked up cause me any issues? like the one where my car hits a brickwall? i was talking to a friend at work whos always been really big into camaros including thirdgens and hes saying that the ecm is keeping me held back since its still connected controlling the pump and the distributor wires. any idea? i still have my computer in place and plugged in under the dash because i didnt think it would cause me any issues.

Your ECM currently isn't doing anything that is going to affect performance. If I recall one of your pics correctly, you are running a carbed V8 with a HEI ignition. Your computer isn't controlling any of that anymore.

IIRC, he said it was a Vortec 5700 out of a Suburban. Those engines have Sequential Fuel Injection.

it doesnt matter what his engine USE to have as far as injection goes. he is carbed, and his harness for the 2.8 is still in there. im not a carbed guy at all, but i think your suppose to have a vacuume advance distributor. your engine will not make power for crap with only running base timing the

well hes currently running hei, which very few people understand in great detail, myself included. butt to answer his question yes, if your ecm and fuel pump are still hooked up its gonna cause issues, most commonly a rich condition, check your plugs?

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
The ECM isn't connected to the dizzy, correct? Then it's not an issue. The ECM can't be running the fuel pump if it's not connected to the dizzy since it's not seeing reference pulses from the module.
Don't think the fuel pump has anything to do with it, either. Although you will probably want to get a carbed fuel tank unit from a pre-88 and get the fuel pump restriction out of the fuel tank.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Okay Here's what if got going on, stock ecm is in place under the dash and hooked up to the harness , distributer is hooked up to the factory dizzy wires but I cut the factory plugs off and soldered on the plugs for my he I dizzy. The ecm is still running the factory electric fuel pump in the tank to supply the motor fuel. Pump is priming when the key is in the on position but also runs the pump while the motor is running, the distributer is a vacuum advanced model and I have the vacuum going to the passenger side port on the front of my carb. Hope this clears up alittle

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Well small update , replaced the starter since the old one took a dump within like 3 months, found my coolent leak, my lovely Heater core is leaking. And I messed with the motor more, adjusted the valves finally, reset my detent cable, replaced my filthy air cleaner with a new one, and re timed the motor using a timing light. Set the base timing to 10* bdc. But when I reconnect the vacuum on the distributer it jumps to like 43*bdc. Somewhere high. I also ripped the computer out and eliminated it. Before I reset my detent cable and did everything else the car is still brickwalling. Came to the conclusion that my detent is off cause its going through the gears too fast and when it kicks down its not coming back up into the next gear, thus my wall. Before I could check this I ran outta gas lol

Well think I found out why it was brick walling. I had the carb running off the return port On my Mallory regulator. So its not getting the full amount that it should be getting and it just brick walling. From lack of fuel.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Hey guy, haven't updated in awhile but haven't been messing with the car either though, after several failed attempts to find my issue with the motor or trans for brick walling pretty much I gave up and started to just drive it when it was nice. But I honestly think I stump led spoon it by acciddent. I found that I had the motor off timing, I had it firing off at 10* Atdc, WO I retimed it, and it had more power than it ever had, but was still stopping its self. Well I started playing with the distriubter and advanced it a lot where the motor was even kicking back and the brick wall was almost gone, well drove it for a few days and was enjoying it, till I went to start it at school and the starter was grinding again and didn't want to start, well long story short I got it home and on stands with the idea that I was ripping the small 153 tooth flexplate out, pulling the 10 pound starter and going with a 168 flex place and a mini torque starter, well if known I had an oil leak at the back of the motor where the oil sensor hole was at so I figured since the car was down I would pull out the distributer. Put a new cap and rotor in it. And fix my leak. Well I fixed the leak and when I took off my cap, half my terminals on it were bent, and when I took off the bottom that looked burned. I found that I only had one weight running the advance so I think that was my issue I hope. But after I got everything buttoned up yesterday after 6 hours of working on it, it decided the pop a transmission line. So I'm fixing that with rubber transmission hose tomorrow and hopefully driving this thing again.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Wow, been awhile since iv been on Here and updated. Guess life finally caught up to me and limited how much I post. Cars finally back on the road. I trimmed the wiring harness to the bare nesessitys when I almost had a wiring fire. Cut my fuel pump access door and yanked the old in tank pump out, relocated my inline fuel pump to the back of the car and re tuned everything and she's been golden. Iv been driving her the past week and a half and its using about a half tank in a week. But it helps when I lay odd the go peddle lol. Other than that I haven't touched or done much. I still got to get a new bumper cover and fender from my wreck and get it repainted, I need to wire up my cooling fan still but other than that in done tinkering with her. I missed driving this car so much and forgot how it made me feel and bow much fun I had. Only upgrades in looking at are getting some better speakers since I removed the subs from the camaro and put them in my impala. The speakers lack horribly and are pittiful. I had to park it tonight sadly, I jumped on it a little tonight and it walked sideways on me, well when it caught traction I broke an exhaust hanger on the driver side pipe and I'm not driving it around like that so that's next on the list.

It's kind of crazy that you updated this today. I was just thinking about this car earlier because I saw one on Indianapolis' craigslist that looks kind of like it. Good to see you still have it. Have any updated pics?

not mine, iv got too much time. Money, and sweat put into her to get rid of her. I'm too attached honestly. I don't have any pictures but will gladly update and add some soon. It needs a bath badly from sitting almost a year in the garage and that hanger fixed that broke last night.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Well, its about that time in Indiana to park the maro till spring. But before I park it, iv been having some fun, decided to run 93 octane gas in the new motor and it seems peppier, but I found out that this motor loves second gear, I didn't think this would ever shift into third, love how the car pulls like a freight tran now. But iv got my winter project ahead of me. I'm going after a 9 bolt 3.23 posi disk brake rear end next weekend. Spent today gathering parts I'll need for it, figured I'd paint the axle, toss in some fresh synthic fluid, poly enx links, some tumbler LCAs from founders, new rear springs, new u joints, and fixing my speedo gear. That should keep me occupied till spring lol. May start to undercoat the bottom of her swell.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
they do, WWW.9bolt.com. you can get 4.10s too
i realize the difference is minor, but it is was it is, and it bothers alot of people when the gearsets are called incorrectly based on what is common, because it can generate confusion based on the fact that some people still think 9 and 10bolt parts are interchangeable.
I put a 3.70 in my car and looking back I would probably go 3.90, 4.11's are a gas mileage killer, buddy of mine has a '67 camaro with the 375hp 396 with 4.11's and gets a solid 5mpg, I realize it has alot to do with the engine but still... and the 3.70's are alright but it still cruises at 75ish perfectly fine in 5th and still goes well over 100 without really cranking so i think it would be ok going up to 3.90 which would mean it cruises at the same rpm around 65 which is good enough since it's not a highway car.

When you go to do the undercoating, get a gallon kit of DupliColor Bed Armor. You will probably end up with half of the gallon left over, so it's up to you whether or not you want to spread some in the wheel wells (over the top of cleaned factory coating) and on the floor pan in the interior. Don't bother with the roller, use a cheap paint brush. The roller is useless on the underbelly due to the ridges and stuff under there.
Get both the LCAs and the track bar at the same time since all of the above probably need new bushings anyways and they're cheap (only a little more than the bushings alone plus what it would cost to have the old ones pressed out and replaced).
At least you get the luxury of having the choice to use 93 gas... Mine lives on it

they do not make a 3.73, they make a 3.70, and a 4.11

Well officially gave up on the rear, no response in almost a week and yes been online so oh well I guess. I'll just put the posi on the back burner and return my stuff to get my money back. But since I'm not getting the rear end I figured I'd treat myself and the impala to something. Im getting the windows tinted as a birthday present for me since I'll be driving it all winter. Because after the first snowfall, the Camaro will slumber till spring. Or I wanna play in the snow. I'm sorry but I have a blast driving the Camaro in the snow or anything slick honestly. But I am going to pick up some tubular A arms from a member on here for $50 if he still has them.

Well may and up losing my license or getting them suspended for awhile. Passed a cop yesterday on my way back to school from lunch and he said I was doing 110 in a 45. How he deter minded that speed while driving in the lane next to me is beyond me. But yeah.

you'll probably be able to plead that down, the car runs radar now without him having to do anything. accurate in both directions
