Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
i really dont understand all the hate of fram, they're an american company who makes a WIDE RANGE of filters for almost all vehichles and they're a fine filter if you ask me, some say they aren't good for racing, well a tough gaurd or extra gaurd no, they aren't made for it, a fram hp series racing oil filter will be better, they make filters specifically for synthetic oils and some to use with 15,000 mile oil changes (mobil1 extended performance warranties that you can do these if you use it) i imagine fram would too warranty your engine. i have no problem with the company or the product, i will use them despite some hick on youtube pissing on one and saying it was a bad filter

I've used Fram filters for many many years because of price and availability and have never had a problem with them. I have blown out an AC oil filter

well if you dont have problems with fram filters, then more power to you. i guess when something works for someone, why change right? i can understand that. just like someone who buys gas station brand motor oil next to the candy bar rack is just fine too if it works for them. others (like myself) just dont even hassle with risking it. thats all.

And there it is. If everyone only liked/used only one brand of something, there would only be one brand. We all have our preferences based on past experience, financial limitations, and current environmetal restrictions. Ultimately what works for you may not work for me and we all have to live with the results of our selections. Good luck with your choices as I hope to have good luck with mine.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
got everything buttoned up on my car today, got my alternator mounted and my belt installed and went back over everything, im going to recheck my timing on the motor tomorrow as its backfiring and running alittle rough, but i got everything done, but i over filled my power steering pump, how can i drain some of the fluid without alot of effort? tomorrow when my dad gets off work were going to adjust the carb, adjust the timing, adjust the valves the best we can till i get my exhuast on and we can hear the motor for any noise, and put my hood on so i can take it to the exhaust shop, but i still need to tighten up my motor mounts before i put my car back on the ground. how can i set the kickdown cable now? i tried doing it the way i use to on the v6 but it doesnt pull it out when i go WOT. help? i dont want to fry my tranny.

well didnt get anywhere on the motor today, when i got home i put the motor on tdc, pulled the distributer cap after i was on the compression stroke and tdc and i was on time, dead center. went to start the car and it started back firing, catching the carb on fire and spitting gas out of the carb, i set the fuel pressure regualtor all the way down to 3 psi and tried it again and i cant keep it alive... help? still need help on my transmission too

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Well got my uncle on the car today, he re checked the timing, everything was spot on like I thought. And it was still not wanting to start, would pop off but not start, come to find out I had a 2 plug wires mixed, and my fuel pressure regutor adjusted too far down, we'll got those taken care of and it didn't want to start unless it was being choked, and you had to keep on the throttle, it won't idle now. Well my plugs are fowled beyond believe, Iv got a vacuum leak at the back of the carb, and my mechanical fuel pump block off plate is leaking so yeah, I'm going to change the gaskets, plugs, and see if he will idle. This motor sounds amazing and my carb is set perfectly, no hesitation what so ever when you smack that throttle. I got a sound clip I'm going to try and upload later

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well good thing i looked at that carb gasket, half of the passenger side carb gasket was GONE, just a huge wide open space, tossed a new gasket in it, walked over and hit the key and she came to life and stayed running on its own till i killed it, and i must say, OH MY GOD!!!! this baby sounds great!!!!! at idle its sitting at about 500 rpm on my tach, so about 700 on v8 tachs. throttle has no delay in it, starts and dies with the flick of a key, and i havent even changed the plugs yet. might not if it runs this good, still need to fix my oil leak at the fuel pump block of plate, iv got a leak at the back of the intake where my oil sensors are at so i need to figure out why thats leaking, and figure out why my driver side valve cover keeps smoking, or it might be my manfolds i guess. i need transmission fluid, my trans is dry, i kept wondering why it would grind when i put it in gear, i found out. should be able to update more tomorrow, im getting fluid, installing my choke cable, fixing my leaks, then hopefully taking her down the road for the first trip.

hell yeah, this car is comming along. and btw these tannys hold 16 quarts. 8 in the converter, and 8 in the trans. so you might need quite a bit more quarts till it will move under its own power. i wanna see this, hopefully we can cruise to next years 3rdgen fest. never been yet

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
update about the car, got everything squared away today, new plugs in it and it runs alot better, my starter is sticking in my flexplate so i have to shim it more, and my low pressure power steering hose decided to wiggle its self around to my power steering pump pully and destroy itsself while squirting fluid over EVERYTHING under the hood and car. but the worst news of all is that after i got everything taken care of, hopped in the car so i could take off for my first test drive in it and when i put it in gear i had nothing, went through every gear trying to get the car to move and it refused, so i got the *** in the air, and manually moved the trans into gear and my rear tires refused to move at all, im thinking my trans is junk. im going to trouble shot somemore before i look at either rebuilding this one or replacing it all together. suggestions? i think i may have fried it by running my motor with the trans attached and it low on fluid... but also to top today off i got a nice big old mouth full of antifreeze. was adjusting a few things on my car, let it idle for like 2 minutes and killed it, well while i was talking to my dad and his friend about the car i saw my coolent resivour was low so i went to check the radiator, wrong idea. in that time the car had built up enough pressure to blow the cap off as soon as i twisted it and i got that crap all in my mouth, eyes, clothes, my car and everything under the hood, my dad and his friend. luckly it was only alittle warm, not hot.

well put the hood on yesterday and since everythings done on the motor now i took a few shots before the hood went on, im tearing into the tranny as i type this, just taking a break right now to warm up. hood barley fits, its laying ontop of the breather and pushing against it slightly. but i need my hood for right now

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well went and got my old transmission out today, that only took me a few hours since i was doing it by myself. then hauled *** to go get my rebuilt transmission, this guy wasnt kidding, he bought a shop in town that rebuilt transmissions, well when he bought the place he got over 400 transmissions that had been rebuilt so hes selling them now, got mine and got it home and opened it up and you can tell its been rebuilt. everything is nice and clean inside, little bit of oil im guessing from assembling it, but i cant get my torque converter on, i swapped the tail shafts fine, a few pan items, and everything else swapped over fine but i cant get this torque converter to go on the last click, i can get it on my old trans but it wont go all the way on the new one.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
update, well it moves!!! figured out my issue with the old transmission and the torque converter. when i was trying to install the torque converter on my new transmission i couldnt get it to go on, well after some digging i found out my old junk trans was an 83 transmission, my new one is an 86, i had the wrong spline teeth count for the torque converter, after i installed the correct TC it slid on pretty as could be, so i went out today, filled my TC, and installed the new trans and had everything done within 2 hours. got in and fired up the car, filled the trans and started to put it through the gears and this bad boy lunged into gear as soon as you touch the gas. im still a pint low on transmision fluid and i need to install a new dome light bulb but other than that its done, im going to finish filling the transmission tomorrow then go for my first drive. if everything goes right then im taking it to the exhaust shop monday, then waiting on a member on here to ship my front turn signals out so i can get them installed, after that all i need is gas and im going to start driving it again. i had to wire my fan up to my ignition sadly but i need my fan and since i ripped the comptuer i have no way for the fan to work. oh well. its minor.

Took the first drive today, first time pull was bad, carb was adjusted horribly, second time was better, adjusted it more, third time I was going side ways for an entire block length. My gauges aren't working those so I think I blew my fuse, going to the shop tomorrow,

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
yeah, this motor is torquey as a mother man, sitting in my garage tapping the gas after i adjusted the car it started to spin the tires and slide sideways, just tapping the gas, im gonna get in trouble
i can already see it lol. oh well, fixed my gauges and got a bracket made for my throttle return spring so its not clipped on my valve cover anymore, after i get my exhaust done im going to finish my last few adjustments on the motor, finish up my last few things on it, and drive the tires off of it. i still need my new light for the front since this one is broken from the accident but bruce said he will try and ship it tomorrow.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well, when my dad got home we went out and readjusted everything on the carb, it pulls great now, i still have an idle issue and we think its from a vacuum leak somewhere on the motor, just need to find it and stop it. gotta say WOW, this thing has alot of torque, when you barley get on the gas it will shove you back in your seat before you can even think about it, and has no problems roasting a set of tires from a stop, i havent tested it while moving it, still kinda babying the motor. i dont have a kickdown though and the trans is shifting weird, so im going to change out to a shorter TV cable and see if that will help me any. after that i will set it and see if that helps. think i also have a bad ground somewhere because as the idle changes so do the brightness of my lights lol.

The thing with your lights is somewhat normal, all older vehicles will do that. If it idles low especially. Maybe a weak alternator or battery could be the culprit. My 85 does it and my older trucks do the same thing

i would guess you need one for a tbi 3rdgen. assume they would reach the same distance as a carb. and adjusting them isnt hard either. i dont trust anyone but myself to adjust mine.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Do you have a pic of the current TV cable setup? On my first Camaro, I went carbed (from TBI) when I swapped the engine, and made a simple bracket that bolted to the throttle of the carb in order to get the correct geometry. My problem at first were very hard shifts, and when I looked closer I noticed I was getting full pull (line pressure) on the TV cable before it reached full throttle, thus limiting my power by not allowing the throttle to reach max position! I have heard this can hurt the transmission, and can try and find the pic with dimensions I used before if you're interested.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Well I found my problem, I had a tpi tv cable, way too long. Went out and bought a new cable for a 4bbl carb camaro and installed it and it hooked right up, nice and smooth. But now I need to fix my shifter, went to go take a drive today and when I was working on getting the car started and running it lunge backwards when I got I the gas and shoved me, after I got it stopped I saw that I was in park, uh ho. Got the car back in the garage and in the air and my shifter cable is about an 1" to short to fully engage the parking pawl. So I need to make a peice for my bracket so I can make it an inch longer .

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well made an adapter for the shifter bracket, gears are alittle off on my console shift indicator but it works, reverse and the neatural letters are reverse, OD is neutral, and drive is OD. took it out and WPW, laying on it from a stop it will just smoke the tires off all the way through third, getting on it while moving from about thirty it will chirp and break the tires loose all the way to third

1. You're not used to driving it yet with the increased power. The 3.73s will lay out more torque and if you can't control it...

2. If you plan on doing any long distance driving, your mileage is going to suffer.
3. Then you have to hunt for speedo gears for the transmission
