Help passing emissions 84 z28
Help passing emissions 84 z28
I have been trying to pass emissions some of my emissions Equipment has been eliminated when I first went through my hydrocarbons and co were high I changed the oil to a thicker viscosity added a no smoke formula changed plugs and wires as well as my pcv valve and added some fuel additive this cut all my readings more then half now I'm passing everything but hydrocarbons so I retarded my timing and leaned out my carb as much as possible and my co dropped to nearly nothing but my HC shot back up more then they originally were.... Now I'm stuck. I have people telling me to set my timing back to stock which is 4 degrees And I was also told by a friend who had the same problem to advance the timing and run a couple gallons of 85 fuel to get it through.... Any suggestions I'm pretty desperate and broke so the cheaper the better. Thanks

I realize that. We don't have emissions here. I really wouldn't have thought they would do all that on a 84 either.

here in nj if its not registered as a historic (25 years and older) you still have to pass emmisions for the year the vehicle was made, they just did away with safety this year

As for your problem, I had the same problem. I couldn't get it to go through emissions. My guy was cool though and after the 6th time of trying to pass he put my engine in as a V6 and I passed first try.
Since that likely won't happen again, I found the program later on. Pretty much all of the vacuum lines on my car were lose or not on at all. Not to mention the EGR valve was the wrong one for the car and the vacuum lines going to it were too big for the ports. So I'd check your vacuum lines.

You could have probably spend less money paying someone to give you a sticker, that what you spent trying to fix it.
1 out of 5 shops will sniff a different car that will pass for under 100$ in NY. Ive seen people buy safety stickers as well for under 50$.

In de we don't get inspections at a shop it's done at the DMV by the state so it's kind of hard to find someone that works for the state that's willing to risk there job for some dude they don't know... I wish it was done at a shop because I would just pass myself since I work at one lol

Its not exactly as simple as, I work at a shop so I can inspect a vehicle. You need at least a years experiance with auto repairs not just work time in a shop, to even apply for a license. Once you get approved then pass the test then you can start inspecting vehicles. If you get caught doing something wrong there is a hefty fine for you yourself, your shop and a suspended liscense.

Damn, im in NY and i have an 85 Z. I took off all the emissions crap, have no cat, and still passed. Of course the guy doing the inspection is a good friend. Didnt hook anything up, just pretty much looked at the brakes, lights then talked about all of the 3rd gens he has owned. 20 dollars later i was done.

New york requires only a safety inspection on cars 86' and older. So theres no special treatment or anything there.
