Hello all, starting a build thread.
Hello all, starting a build thread.
Well, this is my 4th f-body, 3rd camaro. I had a 1984 firebird with a carbed 305, a 1988 iroc with a tpi 305, a 1994 z28 with an lt1 and a six speed, and now I have this pile. A 1991 rs. I bought it for next to nothing with no motor, a t5 tranny, and all apart. I have a nice 350 to put in the car along with a 125 shot. I will also be installing true duals, Hedman long tubes, a 6 point cage, some prostars, a two step, and some other goodies. Here's what I have so far.
The pile when I picked it up:

And here's what I've gotten done so far.
(I've only had the car like a day)

I need to buy a clutch today, and get some body work done.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Not much is gunna get done today, I picked up a clutch, and sanded the car down.

I wanna Sand the vht off the tails, and get the car in primer, as soon as I pull the dent on the right side quarter panel.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
to get the tint off the taillights use a scotch bright green scrubbing pad and Nailpolish remover, I used it on my car and my bros works great
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I paid 300. The kid wanted 500 with the 305, I told him to keep the motor. Today I want to make a sheetmetal panel for where the radio and hvac controls once were. ( if anyone has a picture of that, post it up, I need ideas)
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Well today got some things done. Made a plate for the hole where the hvac/radio was. Also another big thing is I sorted out the crazy wires all over the engine bay. I pulled the engine harness out, leaving only the wires for the lights and windows, basically all I need. Also noticed I had no brakes, so I'll have to sort that out. Cannot wait to get the motor in!
Today's project!

Probably paint it black after I figure out where I'm putting the gauges.

Nope no stereo. Trucks got a stereo. Not much got done so far, installed some hood pins, since the latch was junk, and bought a throttle cable and header gaskets. Right now the truck is getting inspected, so as soon as that's all done I'm gunna try and get the motor. I also want to paint the engine bay.
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Picked up the motor tonight, it's in rough shape cause it's been sitting around. But it's got a new carb, a cam, some minor work, and 10,000 miles! Sweet. Needs some
Valve covers and simple green and paint. I started putting the headers on, and I'll finish up the motor in the morning.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I had a few issues today. The motor mounts on the motor did not fit the pads. So I went out and got some solid mounts. Then they didnt fit the pads either so I had to switch those out on the k member. What a nightmare!!!! Well now I have nice motor mounts. My second problem was the flywheel. It was too big, and the one from the 305 was for a 1 piece rear main seal. So if I get a flywheel, this motor can go in!
On a positive note, I hooked up my Lokar throttle cable. Such a nice piece, happy I have it.
Only pictures I took today.
My first problem, new motor mounts not matching the stockers.

The new ones installed. I had such a hard time, might weld them cause I can't get the last bolts in.

A crappy shot of the dirty motor, with the headers on. Don't mind the rusty valve covers, they're on there so I can degrease and paint.

And the car in it's current state.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Got alot done today! My flywheel finally came in, I degreaser and painted the motor, put valve covers on it, and dropped it in! Pain in the ***, but it's in! Tomorrow I'll hook up the throttle cable and as much of the wiring. Also got a set of 2-5/8 phantom gauges, and a msd box and coil! Pretty excited about that. Here's some pictures. Also, why is the front of the car sitting so freaking high? It's like a monster truck in the front.

Motor looking better

The car looking like my lifted truck

Keep in mind the motor is in the car at this point. Why is it so high? Will it settle? It hasn't had a motor in it for awhile.
I'll get more pics during the day tomorrow. What do you guys think?

It will settle. My car even does that if I just jack it up to change the oil, but it settles. Nice work!
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Well got some stuff done today. Put the radiator in, made some temporary straps. Also checked out my fuel situation, was considering a trap door mod. Lifted the carpet, and someone beat me to it. So ran one of the lines up to the front. Also test fitted my back wheels. And got some of my gauges mounted. Now it's just up to me getting some
Small things. Waterpump pulley, some rubber hoses, some fittings, shorten the throttle cable, etc. Little crap. Give it another week, should be getting ready to fire up!

Sweet! How have I missed this thread for so long?
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Well got a bunch done. Started hooking up ignition, got a new fuel pump, and bought a really nice edelbrock fuel line, braided with inline filter. So fuel is done, ignition is almost. Getting ready to fire!!!

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
On another note I found out this motor is a healthy 355. I'm hoping for 12.50s on motor. And 11.99 on the nitrous. Is that far fetched? What gears should I get on the rear with my 5 speed?

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I'd say low 13s. late 12s if your a really good driver and I would suggest 3:42s or 3:73 gears. Many say that the 9 bolt rear is the way to go, but 10 bolt posi rears are pretty good too. Easier to find for sure.
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Yea low thirteens on a cammed 355? I'd sure hope this motor would be faster than my lt1 6 speed car. Which was a low 13s high 12s car with headers cai and street tires.
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Yes. My fuel line is zip ties to my sway bar! That's temporary until re route it somewhere safer. I just didn't want it hanging low when I was pushing it around the other day.

Nice project dude! im guessing you live on long island right? because i was going to buy this car on craigslist but then i came across my formula and bought that instead
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Im a little taken back by this comment. I'm
Not sure if there are any rears weaker than a ten bolt. Especially with a g80. I blew up that garbage posi in my truck, in the 8.5. And a 7.5 inch ring gear is a joke. Maybe if I'm lucky it'll outlast this t5

hmmm, what the details on the engine? right now i don't see anything that will get you quicker than mid 13's....i also see a broken t5 and 10 bolt in your future. if you're going to keep it manual, i'd be looking for a 93-97 t56, or a tremec of sorts.
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I gotta find the build sheet. I'm sure I'll be shattering the rear and the tranny soon enough. Hopefully I can get myself a nine bolt, and idk my plans on a tranny yet. Maybe some heads will free up some power.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
if you plan to beat on this thing at all (the nitrous indicates i'm not far off base), the 9 bolt will be a total waste of resources. i'd be keeping an eye on craigslist and ls1tech and the classifieds here for a 9" or a 12bolt.
also, keep a closer eye on the little details. like no track will let you run that much rubber fuel line, and for good reason.
i see you're running a mechanical fuel pump. did you take the intank pump out and extend the pickup?

I def wouldn't beat on that T5 with that set up. Just nurse it until you get a better tranni, like a T56.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
It's only about 5 blocks from where I bought it. Today
I did the big battery cable to the starter, and the purple wire to the starter. Is that all I need to make it turnover? The ground battery cable is to the head, the msd box is almost hooked up except for two ignition on wires I need. Throttle cable and return spring are done,

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I jumped the battery cables with my truck and the cars lights work but that's about it. I'm guessing there's not enough juice to turn the starter. Is there a clutch wire that has to be hooked up?
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Here's a few pics. I'm about to head back out to mess with it. I need to wire up my alternator, and charge the battery, and figure out the starter. I know there's the purple wire, the main battery cable, and I dont know what else. Oh well some pictures from earlier.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Just modify your current pick-up. Get some 3/8" hard fuel line and a compression fitting, remove the elctric pump, cut off the mounting plate for it, and hang the new line just as low as the electric pump was and fine a fuel sock that suits the new pickup and your done. Nice progress so far by the way!
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Thanks! Well I made the fuel line, got the timing right, but it's got bad gas, I'll siphon it all out tomorrow and get good gas in it. It ran out of a bottle. Ran like a beast!
SOme random pictures, I'm iffy on the Chevy emblem. Is it tacky?

I have a short video as well but don't know how to post it.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
Got it running. Runs awesome! Now my only problem is the clutch needs to be bled, and the brakes, and we're smooth sailing. Tried to bleed the clutch for over an hour got no where. Might drop it somewhere.

Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I noticed you are running the old truck accesories. Have you tried connecting that PS pump? You will need a later model version with metric fittings to attach to the gear box. Also, is that an external regulated Alt?
Re: Hello all, starting a build thread.
I'm not sure in the alternator. I hooked up one wire and it seems to be ok, I could be wrong tho. That was one thing I was not sure about. Also I found a fitting for the steering box and clamped all the hoses on. Idk if it will hold the pressure, seems fine so far. Any help is appreciated!!!
