Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Exhaust is done, ran 2.5 primaries into a single 3"x12" Dynomax race bullet http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-24222/ muffler located where the cat normally goes. Then dumped it out the side. It is a very simple system and should tone the noise down enough.

Also installed the windshield.

And I power bleed the brake system, then set up the front geometry. I put all the caster in it and was able to get 1.5 degrees of neg camber. That much camber is a bit too much for the street but should work well on the track after I get some temp readings on the tires and adjust the air pressures.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

THis seems totally awesome.... Not sure Iunderstand the rules though...

2.1: Vehicle Eligibility: Entry limited to mass-produced, four-wheeled vehicles legal for US highway use at the time of their manufacture. Vehicles must be acquired and prepared for a maximum of $500 as described in Section 4. Vehicles must meet all safety standards laid out in Section 3. The vehicle's original, manufacturer-stated curb weight may not exceed 4200 pounds. Individual waivers may be granted; just don't ask about Peterbilts, Zambonis, sidecars, or golf carts again. We already said no.

Sure seems like your spending a LOT more than $500.....

1.4: Claiming Race: At the end of the competition, the Organizers--and nobody else, you lazy, better-car-wantin' bastids--may elect to purchase any vehicle from its owner(s) for $500. In other words, don't spend a lot on a cheater, cause if you do, you ain't gonna own it much longer.

Rims (And maybe tires.. Depends on how they hold of for 24hrs I guess) seems to be worth more than $500....

Regardless... Best of luck. I wish I would of seen this earlier as I live about 10 minutes from the autobahn CC in Joliet. Would of loved to check it out.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

They don't count any saftey equip. that includes brakes, roll cage, wheels/tires, driver comfort (seat, steering, belts, shifter, gauges).... Exhaust from the head pipe back and ECM are also open.

It is a very, vary rare instance where they take your car. And, only the promotor can do so.

Here is the torque arm and trans x-member mod. Used a track bar from a jeep cherokee to get the sleeves and bushings.

ECM in and all the electrical doo dads with gauges done. It Started first click. But it sat for so long I had fuel leaks at the injectors so I had to pull the plenum and rails then replaced all the o-rings.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Trans is all dialed in and working great. Almost 30 days into this build. Monday I'm going to mount the hood, close in the headlight openings and paint this sucker. I got all the decals/graphics yesterday via FedEx and will apply those on Wed. Thursday we leave for the race.

With a $500 limit on the car a cam and the valve train to go with it easily goes over the edge

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

So I filled in the headlight holes, mounted the hood, put the required mesh over the T-Top openings, added front and rear tow hooks and did a super high dollar jet black paint job on it. After decals We're RTR.

Do you want close ups of the drips, runs, fish-eyes, spider cracks, scratches or orange peel? It's a very shiny 20 footer.

Well as you know it's all in the prep. so 3 dys of body work for a 10 buck paint job just isn't going to cut it. LOL

The white decal on the hood just didn't blend across the hood very well so I shadowed it in red and removed the decal.

Yeah I didn't need a gallon... I only used .75qt thinner and 1.25qt paint.... And it's thick! jams and inside doors too.

A Matter of Life and Death Eddie!!!!!! I never thought I'd see that on a 3rd Gen.

There are those who appreciate Iron Maiden, and those who have no business listening to music.

I'm a fan of Maiden, but not as much as a couple friends and a slew of others. Well done sir!

Those wheels look too nice for a car about to get thrashed though.

Me and a couple of buddies wanted to do a 3rd gen for lemons. Sir you have re-inspired me. Too bad all the races are so far away from NY.

There are some races on the east coast... They also have a series called Chump Car. Look into that.

The wheels don't get thrashed. You'll get black flagged if you go out there and drive like a tool.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

We ran the Lemons twice, july 07 with a 78 Buick Nighthawk (chevy Monza) 350-350 set back about 4", 76 chevy 1/2 ton brakes all around, and in dec 08 with an 85 Berlinetta with IROC springs & bars, 90 posi disc brake rear, used the engine & trans from the Buick. Two of our drivers flogged the cars so hard we DNF both times, DAMN! but it's still the most fun you'll have on four wheels. Money's tight so we are slowly working on the camaro, C-5 Z-06 front rotors, 98 camaro calipers & rear 3.73 with torsen diff. 2 sets of C-5 aluminum & 1 set of C-5 mag wheels. 750# front & 185# rear springs. With the exception of the weight these cars can do very well, Some of your competition weighs less than 2000# like a GEO Metro with a 1000 cc motor cycle engine, really fast! So good luck from the Halfast race team.

Thanks man! We spent 2.5 full days just in tear down. Our car is well below 3000# Not a single ounce is left that isn't needed or critical to styling. The scrap off the two doors alone was over 160lbs. I went to the recycler yesterday and recoverd 45bucks with 120lbs of aluminum removed. The wheels we have are the lightest cast wheel out there @22lbs ea. Most cars under 3000lbs run a 1.5 x.120 cage tube. We ran 1.75 .095. It's actually stronger but lighter. The steering column assy is 40 lbs replaced with an 8 lb system. The seats and interior guts were over 415 lbs replaced with a 17lb seat system tracks and all. These cars are lawn darts when stripped but if given the brakes and engine they just have to be rolled through the corners. Use the advantages where fit.

Yes this is real racing and a total blast. When you pool together 4-6 guys resources it makes the weekend very reasonable. I'm a baja at heart and racing for long distances is such a great time. When ALL of your buddies can drive it's a great deal because your whole team has a vested intrest in making it happen. Without a doubt this is the best racing out there for us regular guys.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Well... We had a blast. The car got lots of attention and turned into a very good test session for next season. Got about 60 laps on the car Fri,Sat and Sun... Rear end and drive shaft are toast, have a fuel pump issue and a trans temp problem. But it was really fun and the guys at Lemons were great. It currently has a BW 9-bolt in it. What is the best Junk Yard rear end to throw in this? Narrower, stronger....

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Glad to hear you had a good time. The rear shouldn't be a problem road racing especially with an auto, probably had worn bearings, racing just pushed them over the edge. If the gears are still good just rebearing the diff, rattle can with semi flat, through some dirt & crud at it while it's still wet & spray it again, looks like it's been there forever! As for the trans we had the same problem, LOTS of heat with our turbo 350, I was going to get a lockup 350 from PicknPull & use a micro switch tied into the shift lever to lock the converter in 2nd&3rd to reduce the heat but we got a free 82 camaro with a Muncie 4-sp. Problem solved. I assume you have a 700R4 which I'm not familiar with but you might be able to do the same thing since the converter makes most of the heat. Any way figuring this stuff out is half the fun. If your ever in the Sacramento area I have a 90 Firebird Formula large disc brake 3.23 posi rear, It's sat outside a couple of years but worked fine when pulled it out. Have a 98 rear in it now.
