Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

LeMons has been on the TV twice that I can remember, one race 30 minutes, not very good coverage & one car show in Monterey CA. which was pretty good, which last I checked Jay doesn't do the show anymore it was just to much effort.

And buy the way FlyHiFlylo, your hurtin my feelins, I've spent the last 3 years trying to put my crappy 85 back together & i'm still not done. I'm going to quote Charlie Brown-aarrgh!

Yeah I'm all fancy dancy with this crap and when I said unlimited funds I ait crap'n nobody. But there are guys out there that have no funds but blew ourdicksin the dirt.

There is no doubt cash is flow'n on the deal. But, I have a ton of time in this rod.

Most of what I did with help could be done with your guys' friends help. Just set up a game plan.

By the way, we took it to Willow Springs today... 7 laps and a cup car fire ball from the trans. But the test driver had a 230 foot drift into the skid pad. It was awesome and those NITTO NT05 tires are the real deal. Badass!

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

No vid... sucks cuz it was awesome. Found the problem with the trans and built a whole new one from scratch. Stuffing it in the car right now to test on the rack. Then ripping it out sealing it up and putting another lock up unit in it and going back to Willow wed. I drove out to Bowtie Overdrive today and got a level 3 unit too with a 1600 stall diesel converter.

We are doing some fundraising for Wounded Warrior Project. We are basically doing it like a jog-a-thon where we will get plumbing companies to donate a per lap amount. Then our company will match it. Then at the end of the year we are going to try to set up the car with hand controls and we want several double amputees to drive/race the car. It's all fun and games for us right now getting the car dialed in but when we do; it would be a perfect time to give back to the guys that let us play like we do in this country. Team America! F-Yeah!

We will get this auto trans deal to work at any cost.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

haha, and does the organizer know, because if you think emailing him would just generate an automated response your wrong, cuz i did last night half jokingly and he actually replied, here is what was said

hey gonna be doing the lemons series in a few years, going through pricing of equipment and getting a total together, wondering if the man himself would have any advice for someone looking to enter his own team in a few years? i dont expect a reply i imagine your a very busy guy

Not nearly as busy as you'd think. I was supposed to go to a roller-derby team's photoshoot (no lie), but the weather turned to hell and I didn't want to bother getting bundled up. Now I'm sitting here in bed watching a Warriors game covered in sleeping dogs. So, really, not busy at all.

My advice would be really, really simple: Start out on somebody else's team. There are always teams looking for a single driver or a crew member or God knows what else--each gang is different, but there are lots of opportunities to get your feet wet that way first. (See the LeMons Forum--there's a section called "Human Resources" where people look for teams and vice versa.)

The truth is it's not really very hard to find a decently reliable crappy car, follow the rulebook on safety stuff, and find the rest of the needed equipment. The hard part is finding three or more buddies who'll show up when they say they'll show up, pay their share of the costs on time, and not drive you totally goddamn nuts running in ten different directions at once. Much smarter to learn the ropes as a team member first, then use your "I know what the hell I'm talking about" voice to herd the cats on your own team later.

Anyway, if you're really set on doing your own team, my advice is don't get suckered in by something that sounds like it ought to be fast; a non-running Mustang inevitably finishes infinitely worse than a reliable Hyundai. Find a car that was taking someone to work every day until you bought it--that's going to make your life 20 times easier than starting with something that doesn't run to begin with.

Now I think I may reconsider the roller derby team....

wow i was honestly expecting an answering service or automated reply for some reason, i find it awesome that its really you (as far as i know) and bummer bout the weather, its freezing rain in ohio right now, my fellow teamates and i have set a race in 2014 as our goal, were all college age and hardly getting by as it is (damn obama) so moneys tight but our teams co founder (an NTI grad) will be out by then and we've already started work on our car as a free time project, not gonna lie its an old 305 camaro, i've had several and feel confident they'd run a good race (never had issues) i'd considered doing the driving for another team thing, but who'd want a college punk with no experience haha and its more of a bonding and camaraderie thing we don't expect to win, only hope to finish, hoping theres a mid ohio race in 2014 so we don't have to trek to Joliet. you wouldn't happen to know that far in advance would you?

i just find it awesome he actually replied with advice, i didn't take said advice and i'll probably end up having that team with the blown motor and no organization, but i'll still have fun, and definitely tell him about it, also create a facebook page for the iroc maiden, get the word out about what your doing, and donations will come in like that

I have a few friends that have been running Lemons races over the past few years. I'm thinking about it next year. They are always looking for another guy!

Awesome job, the flat bed. Is sick also, I need you make me a cell set up like yours. Lol. Seriously though how does it compare to the stock tank, weight size and is it closer to the axle or were the hatch glass would be?

Well at least you can see what we did to our car and I can give you the secret sauce on how to build a trans after we spent ubber cash figuring it out.... LOL

Thanks! The cell is about 2 inches below the deck line. You can see the part number on the cell and here is the link. The hump we cut into is exactly where the stock tank sits.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

We finished the new trans build (I still have the Bowtie OD for back up) The only thing we kept from the old trans was the steel B-shell, tail housing and the valve body. I added a trans pressure gauge to the firewall in the engine compartment now we can monitor whats going on in every gear. I also installed the trans temp gauge sender in the trans cooler and bought another sender and mounted it directly in the trans case at the 1/2 gear port. I have one gauge for trans temp so I just put an ON/ON switch next to the gauge between the two senders. So I can easily switch the gauge from the cooler's temp and the transmission's temp.

Then I beat the pizz out of the car yesterday and I think we have a good set-up with the trans now. The converter is very light and the aluminum drive shaft got new greaseable spicer u-joints and I replaced the stock slip yoke with a longer spline section so it would go into the trans another inch or so.

I think I'm going to get these rear brakes next week.

http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/Bra...mno=140-2112-B

I'm also considering a c-clip eliminator kit and Torsen diff.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Those are great rear brakes but what do you have on the front? You might have posted it before but thats allot of reading & Im feeling lazy today. The fronts are the 3rd. gens. real weak point, we smoked them easily out on the track. thats why I installed C-5 Z06 rotors, 98 Camaro calipers. Haven't got the hoses yet since its still in pieces but have less than $200.00 in the conversion.

On the rear, like I've said earlier we picked up a 98 with a factory Torsen, not the best but for the money its hard to beat, plus a couple of years ago while in Reno with my wife we stopped at Summit in Sparks, and as usual I head straight to the get rid of it cheap area & picked up the 3.73 gears (old display set) for $50.00. Some people snivel about having new parts in the car but as you know, what you cant see don't count, just have to make it looks like crap.

These cars are so heavy & drink more fuel compared to some of those little 4cyl twin cam cars that any edge we can get helps. Plus if you are really trying to win you have to have really long driver stints which for me takes away from some of the fun, Im pretty tired after 1.5 hrs. getting old sucks!

Just out of curiosity, how much fuel did you burn, we went through 8 Gals. every 1.5 hrs. with a 218 HP engine that I built for my dads 76 1/2 ton van back in 1990. I was surprised it did that well.

This car is a drunk. We have to fix that. ECM is open. Some of these guys are running Motec. I bet they can lean the crap out of the car on demand.

Don't mean to be a downer but the emergency lights above the roof will get ya a ticket unless you cover them on the road, even pilot vehicles have to cover up when not in service.

As a tow truck business your ok, but for private use your boned, sorry!

Mock-up of the adjustable seat back support. These are now required if the seat is more than 6" from the rear cross tube. This allows the seat to be moved front and back but still fully support the seat at shoulder height.

Ran the pi$$ out of the car for 6 hours with 4 drivers and had a few Porsche dorks out there. They were impressed and I can say we did the 3rd gen proud. The car is so sweet.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Today I made a filler panel to fill in the large hole where the hood latch used to be. This helps force air through the radiator and air filters. Rather than up under the hood.

I cut all the plastic crap out of the fish mouth, added a third hole in the steel bumper to allow more flow to the air filters and radiator and made another panel between the bumper air dam to force the air in and prevent from going under the car. There should be some additional down force associated with this too.

Deleted the EGR valve other than being dead weight it increased the space under the plenum so more air can surround it. I also eliminated the coolant flow through the throttle body. This should help cool the intake charge. Plus it eliminated additional coolant hoses that could leak and also made much more space around the throttle body and t-stat housing for quicker service.

I also ported the intake plenum behind the throttle body. Pics were too dark can’t see crap. L

We hooked up the engine to the Snap On Engine Analyzer for a bit and found that cylinder # 5 was the strongest and # 6 was the weakest. On #6 we hooked up a compression gauge and it was at about 80psi. Then we hooked up the leak down tester and it’s at 30% leak down at Top Dead Center (TDC). We checked the intake and exhaust valves and they are seated fine. So there is some ring wear in that cylinder but is just fine for Lemons. As there is no blow by or smoke. Then we changed the oil filter and filled it with some Moble1 15/50 We’ll keep an eye on it now that we have a baseline. Everything else seems just fine.

I have a few things to do before the car leaves for Texas Monday morn: Wing, seat brace, rear bulkhead and that is about it for now.

Got stickers and shirts today. It's our official charity sponsor. Last race of the season we are converting the race car to hand controls so several double amputee Vets can race the car. And we have a goal to raise $50,000 in donations. Team America! F Yeah!

I have a few guys in mind. One is Evan Evans the Off Road champion son of Walker Evans. He has a dirt bike throttle and brake lever on the shifter. There is also a current LeMons team (team gimp pimp) they have a pimped out caddy with regular hand controls. Either way we will get the Vets out to Willow Springs and have them test.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Well we had a safe and eventfull weekend in Texas. Hauler and car made it out to Texas fine. Practiced all day friday and all 5 drivers got plenty of seat time. Saturday was race day and we posted the 3rd fastest car laps. Then about lap 47 (a few hours in) we blew the engine. Got another bullet going in it. Next race is Infinion mid March.

We made car and driver online! http://blog.caranddriver.com/24-hour...s-inspections/
