It had new bearings in it. What's the rear axle that is a direct bolt in but narrower?

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

I'm no expert but there's nothing narrower that is a direct bolt in, most people use the 4th gen rear which is 4" wider, that's what we did to run the C-5 corvette wheels without spacers. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

I got an aluminum driveshaft from a Junkyard today... Easily half the weight. Direct bolt in plus it has a dampener on it. I also got a 1986 10 bolt disc rear end from a firebird. I couldn't find any 1990 or 1991 rear ends. That is really the hot ticket. narrow, 12" brakes, 10 bolt, posi. But none in so cal.

Also building a new radiator. I'm using the tanks off a truck that have the trans cooler in them. Instead of using one cooler tank, I'm putting a cooler tank on both sides and connecting them with an old Art Carr external cooler. Should be for over 100K GVW. Doing some more internal tweaks to the trans also. Replacing the boost valve with a late model o-ringed one. That should hold more pressure for the extended beatings the trans takes.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Adding some gauges, Trans temp, Fuel Pressure and a better Fuel level gauge. All three of these gauges would have saved us a bunch of hassle last weekend.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons Build. 88 IROC

Ordered a 22gallon Fuel Safe cell. They are making it special for our road race application.... Plus they are putting the level sender .25 from the floor of the tank so we will know exactly how much fuel is in reserve. We are going to put it in the same location as the stock one but it will drop in from the top. When is gets installed this will allow me to remove the stock bolt-in cross brace and weld in 2 ladder x-members. It should reall make the rear section super solid by connecting the unibody frame rails together. Here is the cell I got on the way. http://www.fuelsafe.com/store/race-s...er/rs222b.html

Lemons is very picky about fuel cell installs. They usually fail Jegs, RCI and other crappy cells. They want FIA.

The in-tank pump will be replaced with an external one from a truck.

thats cool, does that mount right in the stock location nicely or is heavy modification needed?

Depends or your skill set as to what "Nicely" will be. I figured removeal of tank will be about 1 hour, cutting the the sheet metal above and x-members will be about 6 hours, fabbing the clamps 2 hours, plumbing 3 hours then wiring up the new pump and sender will be about another 2 hours. So it will be 2 solid days of work.

It may get scraped or dented but distroyed is highly unlikely. This isn't smash up derby it's endurance road racing.

That is true. Next year we'll spend almost 50-70K to race. That is much more than most spend but when you factor travel, car build, equipment and transport for 12 races it's really not that much plus 4-6 drivers get a swing at it every race. Lets say it's 60K that is 5k per race divided by 5 drivers.... 1000 bucks per driver per weekend. That is dirt cheap.

Just buttoned up the trans rebuild and installed a new convertor we built... It's a 10" with a 1400 stall. 10 bolt rear axle housing is in with the posi carrier and 4:10 gears I got from an old oil rig 4x4 S-10 in Alaska. All new bearings and seals were also installed and the aluminum drive shaft is in. Haven't finished the rear end. I still have to redrill the axle shafts for the 1/2" studs and install the brakes.

I picked up 3 more gauges... Fuel Press, Trans Temp and 0-90 ohm Fuel level. I haven't got the fuel cell yet from Fuel Safe but it should be here any day.

I should have the radiator done next week. I took off the drivers side tank and installing another passengers side tank with the trans cooler in it. Then I will connect the two with hardline and an additional trans cooler in between. The configuration is like this. Hardline from the tranny goes in the radiator at the stock location with the stock cooler then it comes out of the stock cooler around the front of the radiator into the external cooler. Then exits the external cooler and goes into the secondary trans cooler in the drivers side tank, exits the drivers side tank and back to the tranny. Should be 100K GVW effective cooling.

I found a 56" wide aluminum wing on E-Bay and I'm swapping out the end plates with plasma cut "Eddy" heads.

I also aquired an Eddie holloween mask that I'm mounting on a foam head and put on an armature so it pops up out the back of the trunk with laser eyes then lowers back down automatically and random.... LOL

I got some big horn tweeters and a sub-woofer I'm gonna throw about 1000 watts at. The Horns are going to be cut into the tail lights facing backwards so it blasts the car behind. It's all about Business up front and Party in the back.

Most of the last two weeks I have spent on a C6500 Topkick 22ft aluminum roll-off/tow truck we picked up in Minnesota. Doing tons of work on that to get ready for our 12 race coast to coast mission next year. It's going to be the go-go gadget swiss army hauler. Everything we need will be in 30 ft of side box to carry everything from welders to racing gear. Basically we will send the truck out ahead of us and we will fly out and drive then the truck heads home or to the next race place after we fly home.

I'm bummed, we can't even afford two sets of tires right now to run one race, damn economy. Congrats on your ability to run 12 races, thats a strong effort. If you see Jay tell him Gregg with Halfast Racing said hi!

Our team is truly blessed... We are an anomaly for sure. But at the end of the day... You can only do what you can do with a 500.00 car. The only thing we have done "to the car" is bushings and headers..... It's all fab work. Great drivers blew us off the track in half our car. We are there for the party and getting on a race track.

I'm adding a rear wing.... The uprights are going to be welded chain. Then I'm plasma cutting new side plates from 6061T-6... This is the wing I got and my CAD file for the side plates.

Thanks man!

Graphics added.

The white decal on the hood just didn't blend across the hood very well so I shadowed it in red and removed the decal.

Good work on the build but the whole not having the hatch is freaking me out....I guess I have some sort of Camaro OCD or something. I know you really probably can't have glass back there and even if you could it would be heavy but couldn't you manufacture something out of the cage like you did the t-tops? I understand why you wouldn't have made it because it would be alot of work but like I said it just messes with my head. lol

Otherwise good luck and have fun with the rest of the season.

Yeah the rear hatch does cause it to lose some lines.... But it's about power to weight.... It's all about power to weight. When the wing goes in the back it will render some of those lines not needed.

Looks good here tho.

Oh yeah that is definitely a good reason to not have it....gotta shave off every tenth of a second and in the end that can be all it takes to win. Also that right there is my new favorite picture of your ride

We put in about 50 laps over the race weekend. The car has great qualities and we had it over 130mph on the back stretch. A few tweaks and it will be one of the best cars out there. BUT.... Big BUT... all us drivers are really mid pack. 4 drivers that are upper pack could dominate with the car. We are just there to have fun, drive a fast car and party.

Wow! You are driving all normal speed like and he flew by you like the camera was in fast forward. Wish the camera was mounted a little higher for a better view of the road ahead but its nice to have them anyways.

Yeah that was the second lap ever on IROC Maiden... We also adjusted the camera about 2" inches higher later in the day... We will be testing the car in January at Willow Springs before we head to Texas.

It is a Go-Pro HD 1080p but was not set in HD mode.

My 15yo Daughter. It's not really a man cave. That is part of the saloon in my house. I have another game going in next to it this week (Offroad Challenge) The arched area is the entrance to my theater. The bar (below) is at the other end.

In the theater. Snackbar is at the top where you come in from the saloon.

Thanks, I've been building it since mid 2009. It's my other passion.
