project "overtime" 83 Z28 build
This build came to be after i watched several guys i rode with moved on to the pearly gates because of motorcycle accidents this summer. I wanted something safer with 4 wheels that i could include my son on. so I sold the bike and started hitting craigslist. I have always had a love for the 3rd gens but it seemed like most of the ones for sell had been totally ragged out.
We found this one and I went to look at it.
THE GOOD :body is straight , it isnt leaking anywhere , its a z28 T-Top car , V8 , interior looks good seats not ripped , carpet faded but not trashed out. dash pad needs replaced but hey dont they all.
THE BAD : fuel pump went out so the lady parked it 5 YEARS AGO ! The engine was locked up.
I bought the car for $800 because it was the platform i wanted and is going to be a good starting point.
here she is the day i brought it home in the pouring rain.[IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG]

first things first,,, lets see how stuck this engine is......
right hand throttle body is a little rusted [IMG][/IMG]
#6 cylinder has some rust in the intake passage.[IMG][/IMG]
I poured EVAPORUST in each cylinder and let it sit for 8 hours . i came out stuck the battery in , pulled the plugs and sprayed WD40 in each plug hole, bumped the key a few times and it starts spinning and blowing evaporust and wd40 EVERYWHERE... lol lesson learned , but its not locked up any more..

Re: project "overtime" 83 Z28 build
I decided that I want to go with a carb because its simple and I like old school . we are keeping this a budget build so i hit CL again . scored a holley 4160 off a running engine and got a intake from the local speed shop that was used as a display was never bolted on anything.
ordered a new vac dizzy , new wires and plugs ,, and bolted them on. a little gas down the carb and a sot of starting fluid ,,, and she fired right up !! Now that i know it runs i can proceed with cleaning it up and get this show on the road. [IMG][/IMG]

Re: project "overtime" 83 Z28 build
I posted a thread about the crappy state of my fuel tank,, heres a few more pics of the removal.
car up on stands
[IMG][/IMG]
taking a break , reminding my self how nice it is to have a garage to work in [IMG][/IMG]
cut the 30 year old exhaust off [IMG][/IMG]
2 hours and a few well chosen adjectives later...
[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]
hoping this is crystallized gas and funk and not all rust.. [IMG][/IMG]

Re: project "overtime" 83 Z28 build
Riding is fun, but can be a little scary at times thanks to fellow motorists who are not focused on their driving task. I sold my motorcycle shortly after moving from a very small city in the midwest to metro Detroit. I also got out of snowmobiling (for a while anyway) after the kids were born for the same reason. Lady I worked with died in her husbands arms after she was forced off the trail by a careless oncoming rider, and she hit a tree. No way to get help in time. Very sad.
Looks like a nice project. Great that you have a chance to involve your son as well.

First start 83 z28:
Needs timing set , but it's alive. That's the longest it's ran in 5 years . Not bad so far ,

Re: project "overtime" 83 Z28 build
Just a ltitle update. Engine apart for rebuild, A/C delete, computer and all unused Wiring removed.(harness intact not ripped out) engine bay painted gloss black. Started doing some spot rust removal on the body.
Engine has been bored .030 already, so I thought this was going to be easy. I cleaned it up , then honed the cylinders . After I washed it again I found what I am pretty sure is a crack in the cylinder wall. GRRRR.
