Hey guys I need some help making a decision. The guy I sold my 4th gen trans am to is willing to sell me the spoiler back for $90, right now I don't have any spoiler on it and kinda like how it looks and how light the hatch is withought it. Probably won't kill the struts. But I also like how the 4th gen wings look on the 3rd gens. Give me some imput guys
The 4th gen wing doesn't weight near as much as the stock rubber wing that you took off. I wouldn't worry about that weight killing the struts. IMHO Thirdgens look funny without some sort of rear spoiler/wing on them, so I'd put something on it.

I agree put the spoiler on!

doesn't the 4th gen spoiler have to be modified to fit a 3rd gen properly? I know aftermarket 4th style spoilers for 3rd gens exist, but they are custom made this way...Originally Posted by Rick88IROCZ
I agree put the spoiler on! The center posts need to be extended, iirc. Several members have installed 4th gen spoilers on their Thirdgens.

Hawks make a 4th gen wing for our cars nut the difference between 90 and 400 bucks is worth just using the real 4th gen. Its comming from a 95 so it should fit right on then having to extend the to center parts what's the best way to do that
i potoshoped a 4th gen spoiler onto it i think it looks good

$90 is a little high, considering ours were $100 like 3-4 yrs ago. (Has it been THAT long? WOW!)Originally Posted by thegoochking

Interesting... I will go this route next year... I have the formula wing, but I've always like the 4th gen wing...

I love the 4th gen spoiler look on my third gen. Alot of people dont even know it isn't stock. It is VERY light too. race021.jpg?t=1267670832

Looks completly out of place on anything but the 91 and 92's..
But it still looks better than no spoiler, and still looks better than a cracking, falling to peices, rubber spoiler.

I agree I defiantly think it looks out of place on a 3rd gen. the stocker looks tons better.

Obviously OPINIONS vary. My 87 had a fiberglass repro stock wing on it, when I bought the car. I always thought it looked too small.Originally Posted by BigBadGTA

My only slight desire for it, would be that the rear 2 corners were more "square" than the very round curves they have. I have considered trying to build them out, to suit my likes more.
i think it looks prety agressive with the forth gen wing. JUst have to drive from cape coral to treasure coast to get mine back
prety far drive.

I too think it looks very out of place on a third gen. If you have to have something back there and want something light, why not just run the straight across wing style like some of the cars got before the aero wing? That's what I have on mine, it's light, and it looks good.

I agree, the 4th gen and no spolier look are both ugly. I have the wrap-around style spoiler but was thinking about changing to the standard firebird spoiler. Does anyone have pics of one on a GTA?
Junior Member
honestly i would have to say that they look better to me with no wing at all. they look more sleek and agressive.

like it

I have a 4th gen spoiler on my formy and made it to look like a 92 formula and I absolutely love it and get compliments all the time.

IMO the 4thgen on really looks even half decent on the 91-92 birds. On the older ones it looks tacked on. It does not flow well at all.

I'm also looking for a 4th gen rear spoiler! They do look cool on a 3rd gen firebird! I've never put a 4th gen rear spoiler on a 3rd gen firebird before. But I'm looking forward to what it will look like.

If you get an OEM one, get one from a 93-97 'bird. The 98-02 ones will fit, but never fit right, without a lot of extra work done to them.Originally Posted by monster 91

Standard Firebird wing with TA/GTA ground effects:

The 4th gen looks like crap on a 4th gen T/A let alone put it on a 3rd gen .IMO the best is the 3rd gen wrap around style it fits the car much better.

no wing looks kinda cool to me
4th gen wing is what i may go with tho

Arguably that's really a Trans am wing. Technically it is the first 3rdgen T/A wing. About 97% of 1985 Trans am's I have ever seen have that wing. I considered swapping my wrap around for one.Originally Posted by cal30_sniper

Kind of like when people refer the powerbuldge hood as a formula hood when really its a t/a hood.

I couldn't agree more. Its fine on the 1991-1992 cars, but anything before that, NO.Originally Posted by The_Wraith

I disagree with both of you! So much so, 4 years ago I took my fiberglass repro OEM-style wing off my 87 GTA & put on a 4th gen wing.Originally Posted by 87WS6

Then sold it, because I knew I didn't want to switch back. It matches the angle of the mirrors & the hood.

I think it looks ok in the pics on the white car but I think it's more of the angle of the picture. From the rear imo they look terrible. They do look good on anything 91 and up though. I really like the 91-92 spoiler, I wonder how that would look on a pre 91 car?

True most pics kicking around are odd shots or far away to make it look better. IMO most people wouldn't like it if they saw some real close ups on all angles.Originally Posted by Transmetal

I have several different angles and close up shots. What exactly are you looking for? But, my car is a 91 so it might defeat the purpose. Originally Posted by The_Wraith

It's also has a lot to do with where the spoiler is mounted on the deck lid. Too far forward or too far back and it just wont look right. It took me a couple of hours of moving it back and forth on my car, stepping away, and looking at it from all angles before I marked and drilled the mounting holes.
IMO it's "perfect" for 91-92's, but I'm considerably biased. It looks ok to decent on some 90 and earlier cars. Those are just my opinions.

Yeah on 91-92's I think it looks just fine. But on the older ones not so much. You always see plenty of pics on all angles of people with 91-92's but never really good shots of the 85-90 because it does not flow well at all.Originally Posted by FYRCHKN
