Not sure if you can, but check this thread. The shop couldn't fix it, so I guess I'm chit out of luck.

Mark,

Too bad you don't live a little closer. Bring your "dead drive" to the next gathering. I've got a hot dog that says it is recoverable. :sillylol:

You really think the info is recoverable. The guy said it's just not getting any power to it, not spinning or anything. I had to take the laptop back, it wouldn't start up after they installed more RAM for me, he said he got the net to work on it though. Had to wipe out the C drive though.

WTF? Your O/S load was semi-fubar, but not beyond help from what you were saying. What would not start after the RAM install? Dunno what someone can screw up with poping a door and snapping in a SODIMM...

The computer would get power for like 2 seconds and there would be noise, but then nothing. They're goin to call HP and see what's up. The guy said he got rid of all 131 viruses, but the net still wasn't working. He said if I was using Win 2000 he could have saved the C drive, but he wasnt sure about XP, I didn't really have much important stuff on the C drive, so I'm not to mad about that.

It's a good possibility. Hopefully it is not too hacked up with the previous attempt. Just keep it off to the side, and see that it does not get any more hands in on it until I can see it in a week.

Umm, did you tell him that win xp is just a revision of win2k when you boil it down? 131 viruses!?! Yikes! I would have flattened that mess too then if it were me. Trouble is, what is lurking around on that other drive. Guess I will quarentine it from the rest of my home network when I get a look at it. Ewww...

I would think that the memory module is not compatable with the laptop from what you are discribing. Some laptops require specific modules designed for them, it's kinda like a guarunteed future parts sale for the manufacturer.

Well, they took out part of the memory, I guess the new memory and tried it, but no luck.

One more comment. This guy said that the HD could be opened up to see if the discs got misaligned?? think it could be?

also, could I send it back to the manufacturer and have them get the old info off of it onto another one.

That's pretty unlikely, it would take a severe shock to misalign the discs. They guy who looked at it is starting to scare me, seeing as first he said it has no power and then the discs might be misaligned. One has -nothing- to do with the other, it sounds like he is just trying to babble his way out of not knowing what the problem is. Again, keep it away from him if you can. You can ship it to me in the mean time if you want, and I will let you know what turns up.

As far as the manufacturer, per your warranty, they are -only- responsible for supplying you with another drive if they see fit, and have no interest or responsibility for your data. Let me know the scoup when you get a chance...

Let me clear up some confusion, the " guy" that said they discs may be misaligned, was a guy in one of my classes, not the guy from the computer shop.

Ahh, gotcha.

However, if you told him that your drive had no power, he is full o' , one has nothing to do with the other.

By severe shock I mean in excess of 4 g's...

Nothing too bad, last semester it got bounced around big time in my book bag as I was running down hill to get to my dorm , cause it was pouring out, but worked fine.

My GF kind of bobbled it the other day right before it quit, but nothing worse than what happened last semester.
