I know you don't know me but was told that you could help me with diagrams and instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble the tilt steerring column so that I can tighten it up. I need all the help I can get I need to do this soon as it is begining to get really loose. Hope you can help me. Thanks.
RED86TRANSAM,
Are you sure it is the 4 bolts down below the tilt mechanism that are loose or the 2 (I thinkg) bolts that hold the steering column up under the dash? Reason I ask is if it is just the 2 bolts then its a fairly easy task. However if it is down below the tilt mechanism then your in for some fun! In my case It was those damn 4 bolts so it was a PITA! I had to buy a special puller from Snap-On to remove the pins at the tilt joint so I could get a straight shot at the 4 bolts. It is not an expensive tool ($15) but it may be hard to acquire cause of your location. I think I have an exploded view of the steering column somewhere which will help you should it be those 4 bolts. Try to find it and post yet tonight or tomorrow. BTW if it is the 4 bolts you will also need a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel hub.
Did you check the 2 bolts that hold up the steering column?
Mike

Yes, I checked the bolts that hold the colmn up, and is not them it is deffinitely the 4 down in the column. I have a steering wheel puller. What is the exact name for the other puller is it "tilt steering pin puller"
I am going to look for it tomorrow morning and try to start taking my column apart Friday afternoon or Sat. morning any suggestions, or instructions and the exploded diagram would be a great help. Thanks

The device I used to remove the tilt mechanism pivot pins is called "TILT STEERING PIVOT PIN PULLER" and is made by Snap-On. Snap-On part number is: CJ134 Like I mentioned earlier it was about $15 (back in '97 or '98). I believe you can acquire a similiar tool thru GM but I heard it is prone to breaking! DO NOT drill out the pivot pins! They are not available thru GM or any other place. I almost drilled mine out because I didnt have the pin puller and figured I could just get a new pair. Good thing I checked before I went and drilled them otherwise I would have been down crap crick without a paddle!
I am going to e-mail you an exploded view of the steering column assembly. I would post it here but I dropped Photo Point due to them no longer being a free site
When you get down to those 4 pesky bolts make sure to remove them, clean them really good and apply a thread locking (Loctite blue or red) compound to them. This will prevent them from coming loose again!
Mike
When I sent the images to you they were kicked back and I got a message saying:

OK........I compressed the files down somewhat (actually by a factor of 4 or 5) and sent them off to you 1 by 1. Let me know if you got them.
BTW......who gave you my name? Just curious.

I found the snap-on man and come to find out he lives just a few mile from me. Go figure. Well I have all the tools now so I will sart tomorrow. Thanks for the part # and I'll be waiting on the diagrams. Thanks.
Here is a tech article about it from this website:
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...ngcolumn.shtml
Between the article and the scanned images I sent you it should be fairly straight forward.
Mike
Hmmmm........just read it thru and it says do not remove the 4 bolts....just tighten them otherwise a plate will fall off on the backside. I think you can remove 1 bolt at a time, clean it, apply threadlock, reinstall it and you should be OK. Im quite sure it is one common plate that all 4 bolts are threaded into. Check 1st to be sure! It has been almost 4 years since I had mine apart.

Thanks I finished up in about 3 hours yesterday, and only broke one thing. Cann't quite remember how the dimmer rod hooked up, but hardly everuse my bright anyway so I'll fix it later. Thanks for all you help I took the bolts out one by one and put Permatex Threadlocker (red) on them. And tightened them up.
By the way I did a search for steering column posts and in an older one a guy said you had the diagrams but I can seem to get the search to work today and I can't remember exactly who it was. Again thanks.
