New guy, "new" car. Jacksonville..ish

Picked up an 82 Trans am. Pretty much a "barn find". Needs lots of tlc from sitting too long. I have a thread going over in the "show you car" area. Probably should have posted here first. I'm south of Jacksonville, out in the sticks. Once I get a few things figured out, maybe I'll see you out there....

I think a few folks here have had that problem. Congratulations.

But this one hasn't been sitting in a barn. Looks a little sunk into the mud. How rusty is it underneath?

No mud in that part of the world. Pure blow sand. Doesn't look bad, but I wasn't dressed for crawling. I haven't picked it up yet, but it looks like I'm going to. When I get it on the trailer I'll know more. Carb 305 auto. Ran to where it is, but not run in 10 years....

Well that's good. Look forward to hearing your report on it.

We used to get watermelon from over in Beardstown. Grew well there due to sand if I recall correctly.

That's the place. Sand for miles. I grew up there. Still not far from it. Almost and hour south. Now in the land of Calhoun peaches...

OK. I got down to work on the 84 a bit. It took some convincing, but it runs and drives. From what I can see there isn't much rust. Interior isn't great, but not too bad. I didn't realize that the 84's had the butterfly in the hood scoop, pretty neat. It has the audio button on the dash, but it doesn't seem to change anything, hafta check that out. I've had some trailer problems keeping me from getting it home, but I'm getting there. Been way busy, feet barely touching the ground. I'll have some more pics up sometime soon I hope...

Still no time to go get the red one. But while I was there last time I did get to look under it a bit. Not terribly rusty. In fact, the 2011 truck I just got from Iowa looks a lot worse underneath. Isn't road salt great? The vin says its an LG4, which is suprising to me. It belonged to a childhood friend of mines parents. Their son took me for a few rides when we were young and it was a strong runner. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. But I just couldn't let it sit there rotting.

Looks like a pretty solid, complete car. Nice that you have a little history with it.

Re: New guy, "new" car. Jacksonville..ish

I actually beat my friend in a race on prom night. He was in this red car, and I in my 90 RS. I knew he was faster, and outran me to about 90. Then he fell away as I ran up to the spectacular speed limited 112. I found out later that he had let off at 85 because he was afraid that the peg at 90 on the speedo would damage it somehow if he tried to go faster (Gabe wasn't particularly mechanically minded). So he let me by, afraid his folks would find the broken speedo and kick his butt...

Re: New guy, "new" car. Jacksonville..ish

I was wondering. But we see 90+ temp and humidity half the summer. And anywhere near the river, it's Skeeter central..

Btw, odly enough, there's a lake City not too far from here. Though this is the Midwest forum...

Nice Firebirds. Looks like you have some projects if you ever find time! I'm rebuilding an 88 IROC that sat in a barn for 6 years and it's all about time, money, and love of a good car. Good luck to you!!

Re: New guy, "new" car. Jacksonville..ish

Thanks guys. Yes, time is a big thing. I'm not certain I have enough to give either one of these the attention they need. Someone from the board has expressed interest in the 82. And I'm not sure that I want to tackle the 85 at all. I really miss my 89 formula, and I've been trying to talk the wife into just parting with both of these, and putting the money toward a later model formula or Gta that is pretty much turn key. We live in absolute bfe, complete with a mile of gravel before any pavement. So I'm hesitant to get something "too good", however these have woken something up in me that has been dormant for awhile. But I have too many home projects, and need to make some time to travel a bit before the wife runs off without me. So, like everyone else's, life is complicated and far too short.

Re: New guy, "new" car. Jacksonville..ish

Well. As I'm sure you guys have heard a million times before, things have changed for me. I may be making another move, and the cars can't go. I guess if/when the weather allows I'll get some cleaning done, and a few more pics so I can post them in the classifieds. The good news is I may be completely out of the rust belt, so the next one might be a lot nicer. Isn't life fun?

Sorry to hear you won't be able to hang on to your toys. But being in a car-friendlier climate isn't bad easier. I wish you the best of luck, whatever you do.
