Anyone have to get a salvage title in NY . The car has a VT title and when I bought it it had a CT rebuilt one and had no problems putting it on the road in VT . Now NY want's me to go thought some kind of specil inspection . What are they looking for since I last registerd in VT I have swapet the motor and have no paper work for the motor. They want me to send my title to albany befor I can get an appointment for the inspection , I do not want to give up the title if I can not pass . Do they test your emmisions too . Is this just a safety check . HELP PLEASE

I am a resident of PA, so someone from NY can probably shed more light on this. But, I live near the border. My mechanic, here in PA, also sells used cars. This time of year, he'll bring in some salvaged (we call them R titled) cars to sell as winter beaters. He will not sell these to people from NY, because he says it is far too difficult to get NY to issue a title for a salvaged car.
Also, our local club (Twin Tiers Camaro Firebird Club) had a picnic last year, open to all F-bodies. A guy showed up with only pictures of his Camaro. He said that it was an R-titled car from PA, which he was trying to get titled in NY. He said it had been tied up for months in Albany's red tape. He said that he was considering getting a lawyer to at least get the PA title back.
As I said at the start, I'm not a NY resident, so you might get a better view from a NY resident.

No good I have owned the car ten year's and recently put a good amount of money in it . Not thinking about it because had no trouble registering it in other states NY sucks . The car is in awsome shape and no way could you tell it was ever cracket up. It will not pass emissions . I have ways around that with a reggie . Thanks for your help

Umm, I am not completely sure about this but here goes nothing.
As far as a safety inspection is concerned, you should do fine. Emissions is not a real issue unless you are near or in either Albany, the NYC area, or both (don't live there, don't know). All you need is to have a catalytic convertor and working emissions garbage (or at least have it look like it works).
Now, as far as I have read on the NYSDMV website, the special inspection checks for things such as proper alignment, stolen parts, and that sort of BS. You might be able to find more on the NYSDMV website and be able to email someone about this.

The safety check I can pass. I live right next to the bronx so emissions I would have to pass too. My car has nothing evan looking smog friendly . I have way around that though it's just getting past the DMV inspection.I looket at that website and still a little unesey about it, no paper work on motor or trans they are as far as I know not stolen . Do you think I should make some BS bill of sale for the motor and trans . Have to turn in the title first . Thanks for the help though ( anyone gone though this befor)

I found a blog: ( http://www.allhewanted.org/journal/0409journal.shtml go to Recycled Cars) which indicates the inspection takes longer than 6 months. I think that was the same situation that the guy who came to our picnic was in. BTW, we never heard from him again.

The NYS inspection for a salvage title is mainly to verify the car is structurally safe. As far as the yearly NYS inspection... just tip off a mechanic and he'll turn the camera away and pull a different car on the dyno for emissions. He can be liable if the car is not safe, so make sure that all of your saftey specifications are good. No cracks in glass, tire tread is good, all lights work, etc.
