Huey, don't quote me but I've looked into getting another key made for my car. I only have 1 key. The dealership isn't yanking your tool when they say the key needs to be programmed though. From what I remember (I've had my car for 6 years and still haven't bought a 2nd key) is that the particular program for the key is driven off your VIN #......I may be wrong...wouldn't be the first or last time. My is call a few chevy dealerships in your are if they exist and ask what you need to provide them in order to get a replacement key made for your year camaro. I miss my 84. I had my keys stolen that were in my snowboard jacket and had to get all new locks for trunk, doors, and ignition. The good thing was all the locks worked like new

Re: Camaro Key Replacement Help

Hey AC, Would you know off the top of your head if getting a second set of keys for my 89 camaro would be hard to get? it does not have a security system; manual locks/windows but has the chip in the key. I remember the 4th gen (97 camaro) I had a security system with vats. just curious about the key because I need atleast two copies (backups) any help would greatly appreciated. btw chevy dealers have become strict on assisting customers. I remember with the security system on the 4th gen I had back in 2000, the keyless entry broke and I I had to pay 50 bux for the new one and they said I would have to program the remote by them only. I found online a way to program the remote with the security system without a problem. it took me 3 minutes and I was able to have it working better than before.

Re: Camaro Key Replacement Help

in the vats key it doesnt need to be programed but there are 15 diff resistances your key could be and because you dont have the orrigional they need o make a key at each resistance until one works i had copies made for my keys by an old repo man that had a vats key reader mine was key 13 then they just had to cut it to match and it worked but being you lost your keys its a little more difficult. also the first key they made me was wrong resistance gave me a 3 instead of a 13 by accident and i had to wait i few minutes befor car would crank even with the right key i guess its some kind of safety feature which makes sence why the dealer is telling you to tow it in...they are prolly gonna charge you for each key they make plus a bunch of labor to try them all, th eonly other alternative is to get an aftermarket chip and have the vats turned off, i did that on my other z28

hope this helps

Re: Camaro Key Replacement Help

As far as keys for an 89' I'm not sure. The key itself is easy to get (&bay) has a ton of our type of keys for like 15-20 bux. The problem is (described in this thread) is the possible chip resistance. The easiest method may be turning off VATS with a burned chip. My car's ignition, locks, ign. switch, key, etc is all original. I haven't found the ambition yet to get a backup key for my 91'. I'm sure if I lose it I'll find TONS of ambition.....
