Roller Dyno Smog question

Took my RS in for smog on Friday, the tech did a visual of everything....then backed it on the rollers and started the test....I aborted the test because my fanswitch conked out, and temp was getting high...so I never saw a complete readout...anyway, I asked the guy why he didn't do a functional test under the hood...he said it wasn't necessary. as long as everything was there.

You guys/gals have the same experience, or was this guy being lazy due to the 95* heat?

I talked to the smog tech when i got my car smoged, all they do is to make sure that everything is there. was that guy still gonna smog your car with it overheating?

Ya, I heard it start to ping, glanced in and saw it at about 240 and told him to shut it down...

So they didn't do a functional on yours either?

They're supposed to look to make sure everything is there. They don't need to test any of it.

My smog guy doesn't even pop my hood though

I'll be darn...then it would be quite possible to run a set of heads w/o exhaust crossover, hook an egr valve up to the intake and as long as the numbers were good, you'd be okay....

I have to look into this more when I take the RS back to get another test on it.

yep. you can do whatever you want as long as it "looks" legal and it passes the sniffers.

Or just have the hookup and run whatever the hell you want as long as the sniffer likes it.

depending upon the tech he will do a functional they are supposed to in california it consists of a 3 part smog test functional visual and emissions,

things they test, egr valve, timing, idle within spec, mil check engine light, among a few other things,

the only real function checks that the guy did on my car was the radatior check/ and gas cap check

there are no functional tests that techs have to do other than a test of the gas cap and check the timing. technically we are supposed to check the air in the tires before running it on the dyno.

i have seen some clever tricks, a tip if you try to fool smog guys, make it look as stock as possible, any signs of tampering tips techs off and they we'll actually look harder to see if lines have been plugged etc, thinking its an undercover car from the b.a.r.
