New Nor Cal builder

Hey
Just had to ask to see where i am at. I am getting ready to start working on a 3rd gen camaro been doing a lot of shopping to find the car. I have no mechanic backround although i have worked on some parts of vehicles and can pick up on on things extremely quick. How hard is it going to be for me to buildup a 3rd gen camaro w/o being a mechanic? Can i get all the information and direction i need online and what not? What things will i be able to do and not do. The car is designed to be mostly street but with some drag abilities.

My father in law does body work and most exterior work. So the only thing that worries me is being able to get my engine and transmission up and running with the performance upgrades and being able to see where i need to work and tuning settings. I have an idea on what engine and transmission i want to go with but help with a somewhat simple setuip would be nice. Thanks.

First things first, start smoking and grow a mvllet.

Then break out the duct tape and wire cutters and she'll be running in no time!

Adapt and overcome. Use that principle when you work on your car and everything will work out.

Right Jesse?

Re: New Nor Cal builder

What limitations are there on what i can and cant put into the car? is there a size constraint on how big the engine i put in has to be?

Also i was looking around some posts and i saw a few about turbos. Do a lot of people put them in their camaros? i always though those were for *****s and superchargers were for muscle? or do people put both in?

Finally i am aiming for approximately 550 to 600hp in mine so if anyone has any recommendations on setups or builds or anything that would help me reach this goal i would appreciate it.

Re: New Nor Cal builder

Well in cali, turbos are out of the question, Best Supercharger you can do that is smog legal is the p1sc, you can boost the crap out of a rebuilt motor with it and get that 550-600 mark.

Re: New Nor Cal builder

Not set yet. I was just wondering what the difference in them is.

I am just wondering what the different numbers mean like the cc ratings and what not.

Saw some Edelbrock aluminum ones that said 215cc / 64cc just trying to figure out what that means in regards to the engine and hp

Re: New Nor Cal builder

oh ok, the first number, or larger number for example, the 215cc, is the volume of the runner, that is from where the intake meets the head and runs down to the valve. a bigger runner of coarse lets more air in, but heres the catch, if the runner is too big, then the engine cannot create velocity in that runner and your low end torque will suffer for it. mild 350s, especially if you stay with TPI usually use a 195cc.
the second number is the chamber size, the area above the piston when its at the top, a bigger cc will lower your compression. you really need to match what cc to get to what pistons you have to get the correct compression ratio you want. these usually range from 58-76cc, 64cc seems to be optimal with stock pistons for stockish compression. you can go 58cc for high compression and run premium to gain a little power.

Re: New Nor Cal builder

Getting ready to buy the base project for my camaro does anyone have any pointers as to what i should be looking for specifically? I mean as far as major areas that shouldn't be too damaged or major rust areas. I am not too worried about the engine because i will be replacing it anyway. Hopefully going to the ZZ4 350. Just have to gather the rest of the funds for it so hopefully have it within a year or 2.

Re: New Nor Cal builder

I love my third gen, but if I were starting from scratch, I would probably pick something pre-smog and build it. Additionally, these bodies are just not that well made, chevy was trying to save money and it shows. I love the TPI motors (have one in my 69 Impala) and if you were to buy a third gen complete you would probably really enjoy it, but to seek one out to build from scratch may not be the best use of your funds. Not dissin the third gen, just keepin it real.
