Car Troubles
I have a 89 Iroc 5.7 TPI the last couple of weeks my car starts up idles for a little bit and than stalls out. I'm very confused with no clue. I already did a major tune up. Changing out plugs, wires, cap and rotor, iac, tps, icm and did a cleaning of the iac port. If you have any suggestions let me know please.

Re: Car Troubles
Im not a TPI guy. But check your fuel pressure make sure that is within specs. (im not sure what TPI fuel pressure specs are supposed to be, but I would guess 35 PSI or so) If that is okay. Your best bet is to go to the TPI section of this site and tell them your problem, and they can steer you in the right direction. This site has some of the best technical advice I have ever seen on a forum.

Re: Car Troubles
Im not sure about the pump I haven't changed that since I bought the car in 2001. No telling when it was changed. The original owner had it sitting in the garage. How would I go about checking if it was working properly?

Re: Car Troubles
When it dies does it sputter, or just quit, will it restart right away or does it need to sit?
P.s. you own a G.M. they loose fuel pumps a lot, ever if it is not bad now chances are that some time it will. go to sears and get a fuel pressure tester, a vacuum gage and a volt/ohm meter you will not regret any one of those tools.

Re: Car Troubles
wow sorry just reread your original post with all the parts you have tried, you might want to find a trustworthy shop (after testing the injectors) sometimes the price for diag is well worth the sticker shock. We have tools and experience that is well beyond what any do it yourself person would ever need or want.

Re: Car Troubles
So.....what do I get after putting 2 new tires (2days ago) New rear shocks (1 wk ago)? Need to rebuild the 5 spd tranny in my baby. Walter's not happy. Neither am I! I have been babying her for the last month because of the rear tire issue. I want to rebuild it but was waiting until next fall so I could do it in the auto class. Looks like I am getting the lesson's a lot sooner, I hope. Any suggestions???
My opinion about my car still stands about Camaro's: There like kids, always need something.

Re: Car Troubles
Try reading any stored fault codes? They're not always accurate but can point you in a general direction. Basically you need to find out what is stopping the car from running. It's not losing AIR, so that leaves only fuel and spark really. Figure out which one you don't have and then at least you know which system to go after.
Also it being an 89 car, should me MAF, tap on the mass air meter with the handle of a screwdriver while the car is running. Any change in idle characteristics or it dying would pretty much condemn the mass air meter.
These cars are not really complicated, but their systems tend to intertwine so grab the ETM's and make sure you understand what you're look at, sometimes it's right in front of you.

Re: Car Troubles
My 88 iroc 5.7 TPI has this same issue. It started when it got cold out, it would start up, then sputter out and stall. Start it back up and its like nothing happened. But it got worse, now it stalls about 3 times before it wants to run and when it finally runs, it runs like ****! I have replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, 24# bosch injectors, fuel filter, intake gaskets, cleaned the whole intake manifold, plenum, runners, TB, and IAC and its passage way, PCV valve rattles when i take it out, EGR was replaced about a year ago, and the o2 sensor about 7 months ago. Recently threw a code for MAF 33 and 36, a new connector on the MAF and relays fixed this. My biggest problem is it idles rough, it sounds like I got one of those ***** thumpr cams in it!
but sadly it doesnt and its BAD haha
and also wants to stall if i snap the throttle quickly. Hesitates a little on light throttle and a little at WOT but then goes. Put a 5 gas analyzer on it and its running WAY lean. I do NOT know what the fuel pressure specs are for these cars but, at idle I have 30 PSI which sounds low to me, and the when i pull the vacuum off the FPR i get 40 PSI. Do i need a new fuel pump???
