Time to buy a new stereo
I pulled my factory Delco unit out of my '88 IROC; the one with the built in factory amplifier & cassette.
I went to slide in a SONY DRIVE-S MP3 WMA AAC Unit it it's place, but the depth of the SONY Unit is too Deep to fit in the factory center console.
I know absolutely NOTHING about car stereo's, other than our 3rd Gen's are sooo easy to break into for the head-units.
I realize this is opening up a can of never ending worms, but can some of U who actually know what you're doing/talking about help me select out a replacement stereo?
I already have the amp, higher end speakers in the sail-panels and dash. What I havn't added is a set of kick-panel speakers in a custom fiberglass molded replacement panels I bought. I'm not sure what I should be adding for the extra third set of speakers down there by the feet.
I'm after clarity rather than bass, and I'm trying to hide it all so it disappears from the eye of a potential thief. (I'll make a fake face-plate for the stereo)
That factory Delco stereo/amp/cassette took up a big chunk of center console real-estate. What have other people done to ergonomically change things out and still look 'dynomite'?!!

Re: Time to buy a new stereo
they just came out with a new finish panel for teh stereo and ac controls so you can run the new wide stereo's with touch screen and all that. maybe that is something to look into.

Re: Time to buy a new stereo
did you remove the metal bracket that sits behind the stock radio that holds it in place?

These links may help you, I hope. -

Also, when you take the Stock radio out of the center console, theres a metal bracket that sits behind where the radio was, and goes across, with a hole in the middle of it. Often times it needs to be removed to fit an aftermarket stereo.
If you take a look at the stock stereo, you'll see a pointy plastic knobby thing that pertrudes out of the back of the radio. that pointy thing places into the metal bracket to help stabilize the radio.
the bracket is held on by 4 10mm bolts that can easily be removed, pull out the metal bracket and you should have plenty of room for that other stereo.
Please excuse the disorganization of what I said, I just got off work and am dead tired but hopefully it helps! I'll edit tomorrow

hopefully he'll be ok....
My car is just sittin there waitin for sand + paint though.

Got it. I somehow figured that bracket just had to be there, but it makes sense. Now I can put my dash back together this month! Nitro

Re: Time to buy a new stereo
The head unit I picked up is a 'PARROT'. It has a real flat front face and has way more Internet, voice recognition, hands free calling stuff that I don't need to use. We'll see how it works out with the coming Winter projects. Nitro
