explain timeslips to me

ok i just have a few questions

whenever people post track times, others always ask the 60' time?

what is the significance of a 60' time?

the 60' helps you to tell how well you are hooking up off the line. Aka - how good is your traction.

Better 60' = better traction off the line

i've been told that the key to a good 1/4 mile time (also with 1/8) is a good 60ft time. the 60ft time will indicate traction, and torque with sufficient traction.

care to use mine as an example? the two timeslips i have on-hand are 2.2 and 2.4 60ft times. i'm certain that one was launching on idle and one launching on stall, but it's been so long since i raced at the track that i don't remember which is which. (edit--a closer look at the slips indicate the date). assuming the date was accurate, i think it mighta been after my KYB GR-2 install. i need more suspension upgrades as my current components are probably original.

60' -- 2.214--2.405
333' --6.543--6.643
1/8 --10.077--10.132
MPH --69.32--70.10
1/4 --15.691--15.667
MPH --88.27--89.51

so basically, do mods that will reduce your 60ft times, and 1/4 or 1/8 mile times will also drop. this allows you to focus more on getting your power to the ground and continuing to do so while improving performance.

did I get it right, guys?

after reading my own post, WTF? the weaker 60ft time made the better 1/4mile time!

60' is an indication of your acceleration off the line. If you have highway gears and stock stall with a high duration cam, your 60' will be slow, but not because of traction problems.

If you have high number ratio gears and a converter that puts your engine in the powerband off the line and your 60' times are slow, that's an indication of traction problems. If your 1/4 mile ET's and MPH are inconsistent, and your 60' times are consistent, that's an indication of an engine problem (possibly a transmission problem). If your ET's are inconsistent but MPH consistent, most likely your 60' times are inconsistent because of traction problems (I had that issue mid-summer last year because my slicks were wearing out).

So, you see, there really isn't much to it...

basicly bouncing off of what was already said....

everynumber on the slip is important, and can be used to assist with figureing out what the car is doing down the track.

people generalyl ask for the numbers they need to find out what they want to know... thats why they ask for diffrent numbers.

The actual time itself means nothing. I only pull 1.54 60' times which is considered slow for the ET I'm running. As long as they're always 1.54's I don't care. That tells me that I'm launching the same and the tires aren't spinning. If my 60' times slow down then I need to know why because if they do then I also slow down at the finish line.

60' times relate to how much torque you're getting to the rear wheels. The time is affected by many variables.

1. Track condition. If the track is slippery, times will be slow. A hot sunny day will be slippery track until a cloud blocks the sun. Trying to compensate is almost impossible.
2. Tire condition. Slicks hook up a lot better than street tires. When a slick's 60' times start to slow down, chances are they're worn out.
3. Tire pressure. The trick with slicks is to lower tire pressure down 1/2 pound at a time until 60' times don't improve any more. Radial tires are a little different. Most work better with more air pressure because of how stiff the sidewalls are.
4. Torque. Assuming the above 3 items are at the best possible conditions, the amount of torque will create that first 60' of accelleration. Even a 200 hp car can get a fantastic 60' time if it can produce a lot of torque. This is usually done through gearing to multiply the amount of torque the engine produces. Many Stock Eliminator cars will run 5.xx gears in the diff just to get them off the line quicker.

If you follow the other thread about 60' times, the average street car is doing good if it can get below 2.0 and slower than 2.5 is either a very low HP car or it has a lot of tire spin.

By comparison, Top Fuel usually have a 60' time in the .8xx range. ProStock is in the 1.0xx range.

60' times from what I've seen make a big difference in the ET, especially so on a street car.

On crappy Kuhmos, my car spun to a 2.4 60' and ran a pathetic 14.8. I was VERY disappointed in the ET, even though the MPH was over 100.

After putting some DRs and practicing the my launch, I got it down to a 1.88 60', and my ET PLUMMETED to a 13.6. I was within 1 mph of the earlier run, which could be attributed to track conditions.

So from a 1/2 shaved off my 60', I shaved off 1 full second from my ET!
