Decided to teardown for winter

Well its been 4 years on this block and seen lots of street and track use. Just after it was built it ate (2) distributer gears until I realized Mini ram had made it sit about 1/4 high - so I had to grind off colar and use adjustable. With that always in my mind
I knew there would have to be damage.

To my surprise everything looked great, some light bearing scratches on mains, but very minimal - have not checked rods yet but I'm pretty optimistic as everything else looks great.
Some small scuffs on cylinder walls but should hone right out.

Did have an interesting find with intake though, that would explain why car was going rich after 5500..
Use double gaskets to match port perfectly, the ones on Passenger side Both slid opposite of one another leaving no seal between 2/4 - 6/8 ports.

Competition ported AFR's may be going up for sale if any interest.
195cc, 58cc, 2.08/1.60 l98 angle port castings.

Unsure at this point where I will go, may just put in new bearings and rings - or may try to get some cubes. who knows, wedding is in may and not able to spend to much.

You've got it apart that far. Bearings and rings won't take much more. I'm to the point where bearings and rings are required every winter just because of how much abuse the engine takes during the season. It's an expense that comes with the increased power and alcohol fuel.

I meant if there are no changes done, I will atleast put rings and bearings in. But i am thinking of adding some cubes, but doubt it as it will be to expensive I think.
Figured I should have done it last year as It had alot of passes in the previous 3..
Also found that rods were hitting pan gasket and there were rubber chunks throughout pan.

I'll have to be sure and check that on my 406. I'm running I beam rods, so I might not have as much clearance issue for me, but I've got the same same oil pan gasket.

Just wanted to update on the teardown:

After 3 years of all the racing and driving, incuding but not limited to lunching 2 distributer gears with in first 500 miles. Due to Mini ram sitting about 3/8" to high...

Well the damage was this:
Crank had some small scratches that was just fine with a polishing.. Rings looked just broken in (Synthetic oil) so
my machinist reccomended I reuse them.
So basically Polished crank, Honed cylinders, new bearings..
It was a very friendly teardown-so I did not really change a thing..

The only changes for new season are:
7 qt pan
Louvered windage tray
Main studs for tray..
Lunati custom grind 248/254
42 lb ebay ford motorsport injectors

The engine is now back in car and running well, still need to do a little more VE work since new injectors but is running well.

Aslo note: to anyone installing a windage tray - be sure to make sure your dipstick works afterward..
As I forgot, and this is the second time I installed a engine and had dipstick not work. F%$K!!!!
I would try to poke a hole through it, but clearance was very tight against rods, if I warp it will probably hit.. Ohh well.

why would you run double intake gaskets?

To raise intake so ports matched perfectly, and felpro does not offer a double thick 1205.

You can use a FPP-1245 and just trim to fit.

would this have any benefits to a normal non-decked motor? and how is it determined that double gaskets are needed?

Urbanhunter: thanks - I just need some of those clear valve covers... Nice Avatar, great movie..

brutalform: LOL, Yep! Its great man! I have taken pics of just about everything..

xpndbl3: After having intake on and off you can see where it lays on gasket surface after it compresses gasket.. You could see mine where about 1/8 low before double gaskets.. There are more deciding factors such as how the intake was cast - my mini ram has had many fitment problems.. such as: even though the intake set low, the distributer was about 1/4 to 3/8 to high requiring me to grind ring off dis and use an adjustable.. Also when I first purchased it, the water jackets were cut to low filling my engine with anti freeze right at start up.. Its funny, TPIS paid for damages even though they denied any fault - then the new castings had water port raised..
Thay had always gotten away with in beginning because aluminum heads have larger sealing surface - and I must have been one of first to put one on a stock iron headed car which only has about 1/4 sealing area on bottom.

JERRYWHO: Great info, I will remember that..
