Trans Temp

Just wondering what kind of temps you guys running a high stall convertor are seeing for temps at the end of the track, I know that it all depends on what size of cooler and how long up on the stall and how hard etc etc...Just an overall idea, and what temps does your tranny like best for launching.

I personally found the best and most consistant runs came when I had the tranney temp at 150* before staging (they recommend 160* for proper viscosity) and at the end of a run I'm at 180*. Anything colder/hotter when staging and the consistantcey starts to vary. Same goes with the S-10 as well, I try to stage that at 150* and it's right at 190* after I let up, but that is with a true 8" race convertor though so it's slippage rate is higher than what I run in the car.

Anything higher than that and I would either re gear the car or seriously consider sending the convertor back and having it retweaked so it's not building soo much heat.

I don't have a gauge on my car, but I know it didnt like to be round robin'd. I just have a stock GM pump in my glide, and you get the fluid hot and it would try to back up a tad when hitting the transbrake button. I changed my fluid to some Catarpillar fluid mixed with dextron mercon III, no more problems, locks solid everytime. Was told by the guy i got it from that his 10.5 Outlaw car would be at 300 degress after a pass, and with the catarpillar fluid, it dropped to 200 after a run, going 4.70's in the 1/8th.

What kind of caterpillar fluid? Doesn't sound like a bad idea.

There's quit a few guys running regular hydraulic fluid in their transmissions with no problems. The only trouble though is if your running a new convertor the warranty will be void if the the manufacturer cuts it's open and see clear fluid inside.

Other than that I've never heard of any failure due to running regular hydraulic oil. But would personally stick with regular Dextron Mercon since I've never seen any major problems caused by that either and your saving yourself future problems getting things fixed/warrantied.

There isn't a lot of difference between DexIII and N22 hydraulic oil other than color. There may be some different additives but basically they're both hydraulic oil.

I dont have a trans temp guage but have been running and reccemending Mobilfluid 424 in my car for the last 5 years with no issues. Have a precision converter in there and spoke to them before going to the fluid, they said it was good to use and honored my warranty when the sprag let go - have scince gone spragless.

HTH,
Steve

The stuff I use isnt anything like DexIII. This stuff is way thicker. It took me forever to put in 4 quarts of it. I mix it 50/50 with mercon III. The outlaw guys run it straight 100%.
