roll bar in a vert

I know a couple of you tech out cars. I have a 90 vert street car . Im trying to break into 11.5. My question is, can I pass insp. with just a roll bar, like in a corvette vert, or bmw ? I really dont want to put a cage in the car. but i think if i get something fabbed like a vette roll bar it wont take away from thye appearance, and still be safe on the track. any ideas?

Re: roll bar in a vert

You will need an NHRA/IHRA legal roll bar. 5 point is minimum but everyone installs the passenger door bar for a 6 point.

You don't need a full cage until 10.99 but convertibles that race at those speeds, roasters, altereds etc, usually only get a driver only cage similar to what you see in a dragster. It just encircles the driver.

Re: roll bar in a vert

Thanks guys.. Im looking at the one in jegs now. I like the side bar that tapers down, so I can get my tubby *** in the car. I have to put a drivers side floor pan in, so carpet is coming out. seems like the right time to put a 6 point in.

You can install a swing out door bar kit also and be legal.

Re: roll bar in a vert

the side bar that tapers down instead of the straight bar is not legal for a door bar, it must pass between your elbow and shoulder and be a straight shot down, those bars with multiple bends to allow easier entry and exit aren't NHRA legal.

Re: roll bar in a vert

I know you guys know your stuff, but wouldnt you think that a solid bent bar would be stronger than a bar with 2 pins in it. Im glad i waited to buy this stuff...

Re: roll bar in a vert

you dont want a swingout anyway they're for wussies. The bent bars arent legal but depending on how much of a rule **** he is the guy who techs the car in may accept it. A buddy of mine had a mailbu with bents and it ran in the 11s and they never said a word.

Re: roll bar in a vert

no the bent bar will fold in a crash, those two pins are highly unlikely they they will shear off.

Re: roll bar in a vert

Im 6"2' 270 the straight bar is out. If im gonna buy something Id rather err on the side of safety and the fact that its nhra legal. I hate to buy the curved set and not pass, then turn a round to buy the swing outs....
