Skinnies

Something to think about if your trying to build a car on a budget.

When I was at the track this past Saturday, I saw a Mustang with skinnies that just didn't look quite right. (not like any I had ever seen at least).

While I was in the staging lanes waiting, he was beside me so I thought I would ask him about them. Turns out, (what I was kinda thinking) he used the factory spare. (doughnut) for a rim with drag tires.

I know that a steel rim will be heaver then a aluminum rim, but still it's a very cheap rim. He also told me that he could feel a difference.

Just a thought for ya.

the temp spares are only recommended for 45mph...NOT a good idea by any means... leave it to a mustang guy

Re: Skinnies

The rim itself is fine but heavy and using a space saver tire on it will not pass tech.

You can use the rims and either put a front runner tire on which are not cheap or you can pick up 165R15 VW tires and mount them on the rims. There are a lot of racers who use the 165R15 tires but it you start running quicker than 12.00, you should be using proper tires as the VW tires are not speed rated for those kinds of speeds.

The 165R15 is a very short tire. Only around 25" tall. My front runners are 28.5" tall and are a little tight when turning.

Paint the rims silver and they don't look so ugly.

Re: Skinnies

I have paint for the rims, getting them sandblasted on thrusday for free.
I got some Mickey Thompson Et's, and your right they aren't to cheap, but could be worse.
I got these would a little taller tire be better?

I will add that I do agree that they are somewhat heavy rims, but they do offer less resistance as far as the footprint of the tire, and I have already spent enought money at the moment.
But in time. My car will be fast.

Re: Skinnies

I'm using some BFG radial t/a's. They are 155/80/15 (24.7" tall), but I like them.

Re: Skinnies

Partially on my last thought, I should have stated the obvious, that the spare tire does not have the speed rating for the track, and also for me it will be a weight improvement. I have 15x8 steel rims on the front, and I think 15x10 on the rear. What was on it when I bought it.

It was just a thought for something cheap for those who don't have a lot of money to spend at the moment.

Re: Skinnies

who needs skinnies!?!?! hahaha 11.6's and still rockin the 50+lbs per rim/tire combo!! i'll probably still use them till i finish everything else.. but the spares are a good wheel to use if you're on a budget.. you can practically get a pair for $20.. i just like the fact that i can still rip turns when ever i want.. you cant turn hard on skinnies or its not recommended..

Re: Skinnies

Didn't need skinnies but I sure do like them. 22 lbs vs 45 lbs per wheel/tire combo up front. Running Moroso DS-2 tires, 26 inches tall.
