Re: Manual steering box

i got an s10 manual box on my car, don't have the part number on me cause the car is in my dads shop, but all i had to do was grind it abit and bolt it on. you will know where to grind when you test fit the box, i would tell you where to grind but i don't remember and i would have to pull the box to tell you.

I will get the part number from it so your search is alittle easier, I'll try and post it tommorrow.

i asked for a 87 S10 4cyl 2wd manual gearbox from my local autozone. just bought a reman'd one since the 2 out of a junkyard had way too much slop in them.

Re: Manual steering box

Alright, i remember my 88 S10 had the manual setup. How is it driving on the street? I know my S10 weighed less than my 89 but from a dead stop it was not too bad to turn, i will be adding some front weigt to the car, i hope it doesnt make it much more than the S10 was.

I have a Flaming River Vega box for sale as soon as I feel like posting, but the S10 box is much easier to steer on street. Skinnys help alot to over wider tires to..

Mines from a 93 s-10, skinnies and no sway bar..no grinding, just have to remove the sway bar bracketry. About 7 turns lock to lock but fine when moving.

Re: Manual steering box

From what I UNDERSTAND, There are two different s10 steering boxes, only one of which will work, the way to tell the difference is how many bolts hold the top cover on, one has three and the other one has four, I forget which one you need, but later today I can go out to my car and look for you. I know I got my box from an early 90s s10.

As far as steering effort, I never notice the manual box, except occasionally when I have to pull into a real tight parking spot, than you notice how many times you have to turn the wheel.

Re: Manual steering box

I picked up a manual S10 box recently from a friend and it bolted right up, no problems to the linkage. I haven't attached the column yet, but did test fit the ragjoint and it was tight but fit. As for the number of bolts holding the top cover on, I'm 99% sure it's got 4. I may put the power box back in though. I'm not really needing the weight savings so much as the car is not a serious strip car. I'd rather have it turn quick for the twisty backroads around me than lose the weight from the nose for quicker ET's.

It's nice to know the steering effort is the same. I was worried about that because I have to parallel park my Camaro every day when I drive it.

my 3rd gen will seve mostly as a callout, street, strip and occasional gtg car. im really not concerned with the ps feel. im going with a udp and wp and alt. to reduce any parasitic loss from th ps pump.
i want that old muscle car exp., no ac, no ps,

Re: Manual steering box

the 82 and 83 box is the one you dont want.
if it has a 4 bolt top you should be good.
just ask for a late 80's model and youll be golden.
steering isnt bad, you have to muscle it around in tight spaces.
changed to a pinto race last year and it almost feels like the car has power steering again.
lil tight from a dead stop, but anything rolling is cake.

Re: Manual steering box

turn signals have nothing to do with a box swap and if your steering wheel is off then you need a alignment to straighten it back out.

sounds like the wheel spun (heavy side always goes down) and you turned it the opposite way of its rotation. so the wheel is out one half turn.

its a good guess. would make sense since your steering wheel cam is off.
turn the wheel one way or the other(wheels turned) and see if your blinkers work then.

unless the wheel spun and broke the cam in the steering wheel. possible, but not likely.

try turning the wheels and see if you get anything.
undo the shaft and move the wheel if thats the issue.
good luck.
LMK... im curious.

Re: Manual steering box

I just went to the local pick a part and dropped the box off a 92 S10, only change i had to make was swapping pitman arms, other than that bolted right up.

Not nearly as easy as power steering, but not that bad. The dart lil m block i have puts me at the same weight as a BBC and i can drive around just fine. I will eventually get a power steering pump like they use on stock cars though, super tiny, light, draws minimal power...and then i can go back to one finger driving and most of all, a quick ratio steering box so just in case the car gets out of shape i'm not spinnging the wheel 7 turns one way and back to try and regain control...just 3 lock to lock LOL!!

Re: Manual steering box

I had to use my original pitman arm. once I had the box and steering wheel centered it was a little off due to the # of turns diff, I just adjusted the tie rod sleeves to center the wheel.

Re: Manual steering box

ok guys this is what i've done so far: when first installed the box my wheel was off center about 90 degrees, and i think that was because the sleeve that goes on the shaft coming out of the box has one flat on it and that is how they lined up and from that point till now my turn signal timing has been off. one thing that i didn't try was trying to rotate the rag joint because to be honest i don't know if you can or if it would help. i did move my steering wheel so that is was straight, i just took it off the splines and rotated the adapter to as close to center as possible, steering wheel is a grant if anyone wanted to know

so with all that said if anyone has anymore ideas i can try let me have them because the turn signal thing is very annoying

also thanks for the ideas and explanation that have already been posted. i will give them a try when i get out to the shop.

if you can get everything working right, just take off the steering wheel and move it so its strait.
i had this issue on another setup and just moved my steering wheel.
it was a grant 5 bolt type setup.
