Your torque converter is holding you back with your current camshaft. It needs a converter with about a 3500 stall speed.
Your camshaft is also designed for a 4x4 so it has low lift with a long duration to build low end torque.
If the heads and pistons are set up to allow the max lift that those springs are rated at, a 08-432-8 would be better.

What carb and intake are you using? What are your goals for the car? Hydro Roller i'm guessing?
The converter you have now is going to be a problem with a bigger cam because it's already the minimum for what you have. The next cam you choose should be something with a Duration in the 240's @ .050. It should have a lift in the range of low to mid .500's. You will then need a 3200-3800 for your combination to benefit.
I run a XE-284-h from comp with similar numbers to what I posted. Cheap and performs great.

What heads do you have, and do you have any flow numbers? What is your compression?

Re: selectinga new cam... need help
Remember when picking a cam for your car think of how you drive it, you have low gears so you are going to come out of the hole pretty hard anyway, you have a 700r4 which chances are have really low 1st and 2nd gear and your stall is a 2500 so picking a cam any lower than your stall rating isnt gonna really help you. You want a cam that is going to start working above at least 2200rpm. Call comp cams they have a nice cam selection for running the juice.

get a xtreme energy comp cam that has 2500-6500 rpm range and then get a intake thats 2500-6500 rpm and it will work pretty good with your gear and stall, thats if your motor will turn that fast without throwing a rod.

Re: selectinga new cam... need help
I agree that at this point, your converter is definitely holding you back, and going bigger on the cam is going to exacerbate the problem.
Normally, I would say not to go any bigger (higher duration) on the cam, but since you are talking track only, no street, you don't really care about the bottom end (as long as you address the stall issue). Since your heads are stock, I don't think you will see a great difference in getting a higher lift cam, though 1.6 rockers might help as the ramp rates will be higher holding the valve at the mid lifts for longer. Maybe a cam with about .500 lift with the 1.6 rockers would help as well as going with a longer duration (again, as long as you get a higher stall converter). My suggestion would be though, if you are serious about building the 496, don't spend too much money trying to mess with this motor.
Anyways, good luck with it man, and keep us posted on what you wind up doing.
