Chassis certification day today

Certification fees jumped last year right after the local cert was done. Wish the car had passed then. Last year it was $75. This year it's $160. Chassis certification is good for 3 years.

My car passed. It's now legal to run as quick as 8.50. The only issue was the cross bar behind the seat. Thickness measurement was 0.120" which is at the minimum thickness. Not sure how that happened as all the tubes should have been 0.134". It still passed and got a cert tag. Before it gets recertified in 3 years, that tube will need to be replaced. I'll probably upgrade it to 1-5/8" in case I ever want to install a funny car cage. Who knows, in 3 years I may want one.

I also got across some scales today. For some reason the front and rear weights don't match the total and I didn't bother going across again to see if parking the front and rear on the scales in a different position would have helped. The front and rear weight is good to know for a weight ratio. I know my car is still nose heavy however after all the winter projects, the total weight has been greatly reduced.

Last year's race weight was 3085 pounds. Today the race weight (car, driver, fuel etc) came in at 3020 pounds and that's what I'll use for ET calculations this year. I weigh around 170 pounds so the car sitting on the trailer is around 2850. I was really hoping to get a race weight under 3000 pounds. It can be hard to find 20 more pounds to take out. It doesn't sound like much but there's not a whole lot more to remove and there's always stuff I want to add. I could get under 3000 pounds if I run open headers but I love my mufflers. Some day I may get the car 4 corner scaled.

Re: Chassis certification day today

Wow that was a HUGE jump in cert fee!!
IDK what it is @ Rte 66 for Super Comp this time. I wasn't able to go with either of my friends.

60 lbs is an accomplishment with all the mods you've done over the winter.

Wish you a safe & winning season!!

PS
maybe some vid & pics as the season progresses???

Re: Chassis certification day today

The biggest change was the fiberglass doors. That's where the majority of the weight saving came from. It was the last big thing I could replace except for maybe a lighter, lift off hood. The drum to rear disk brakes also cut off some weight. The rewiring added some weight. Changing the slicks from 32x14 to 32x16 added some weight. The aluminum dash removed some. Installing a mid plate added some. I'd still love to remove 200 more pounds somehow.

There were a few other minor changes to add or remove weight but nothing drastic.

I now have a real video camera. Hopefully the girlfriend will be able to take a bunch of video this year. If she's not around to take external video, I'll use the camera in the car instead of the digital camera.

Re: Chassis certification day today

It's an odd size but they had it in stock. The common size is 33x16 but I don't have the room for a taller tire.

32" tall
16" wide tread

That should make a good contact patch on the pavement

Re: Chassis certification day today

It's interesting that I went back and looked at some of my project threads. I think I may go and reweigh the car again before the first race. Technically I took off 65 pounds based on what I weighed it at last year.

According to my project threads, I removed 75 pounds when I installed the fiberglass doors and 16.5 pounds when I converted from drum to disk brakes. That 16.5 pounds of unsprung weight is a larger gain than it appears.

Not sure where the extra 26.5 pounds went. Mid plate, extra wiring, new tranny crossmember and deep sump tranny pan (2 more quarts of oil) couldn't have used up that much could it?

Re: Chassis certification day today

32x16 is a bit odd, sounds like the deal worked out for you though.

Scales vary, quite often. At one local track compared to another I have to run ballast at one to make my 3k minimum, none at the other to be just over. Two different sets of personal owned scales have given me different figures as well. - I just make sure to hit the port-o-let before first round, lol.

Re: Chassis certification day today

I use the same truck stop self weigh scales every spring.

With a 15" wide rim, I knew I wouldn't have a problem going to a wider tire. 32x14 is a very common size and just about everyone carries them but with the extra space under the fenders, I wanted to go wider. Since I couldn't go taller, I knew going wider was going to be difficult. I just lucked out that they had them in stock. The next time I change the slicks, I may have to go back to 32x14 if the 16's are not in stock
