Possible car trade. Post your opinions

So right now I may have the opportunity to make a switch with my car for this car I have known since new. I have always liked it and wanted it but it was always passed on to people with more money than me. now my good friend bought it and will have it on Sunday and would be willing to work out a deal with me because making money is his only interest. He doesn't care about the car.

Anyway here is my car and here is the car in question.

My car. most everything done from 2007-2010 by me (my way).
1986 Sport coupe.
383 all forged and ready for 250 shot ( which I have ready to go).
I just put in very nice 10 point full cage and am re-doing full interior with 4th gen.
Car runs excellent, perfect for 11.0 index or 10.0 with spray.
I have a brand new Trailer and would love to be out racing every single weekend.

The problem is that I still need a rear/driveshaft/ARB to be good. ($3000)
I also have two baby girls in diapers ( 2 years old and 2 months old) and NO time at all.

Here is the other car.

1989 Camaro Iroc Z.
The origanal owner bought it in 89 and converted it to a full Buick GN drivetrain in '90 or so.
Right now it has the built 3.8 turbo motor. 70MM turbo, Front mount, DFI, Built 200r4 with break and 9 inch rear with 3.50 gears. It has 46,000 origanal miles and is a pristine white Iroc. It has a 6 point roll bar and Convo Pro wheels.
The car has run a best of 11.1 but has a bad habbit of blowing up. I would need my brother to put a good tune in it.

The thing is that this car could be a daily and sometimes long distance driver without trailering it. That is a huge plus with the time restraint I have all the time.

So my problem is that I would be giving away the car that I through a fortune of time and money into and it's exactly what I want....I just don't have anymore time and money to enjoy it

Or I can have a car thats 50% more useful, nicer and ready to run.

What are your thoughts? I'd like to hear opinions

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

My personal opinion is to keep your car. Your car looks great, runs great, and was built by you so you know it well. If the other car has a tendency to blow up thats not so good. I might get flamed for this because people for some reason like GN's but I think they sound horrible! Like a lawnmower on steroids or something. Just not my cup of tea. I understand the whole concern about it being more driveable but I would just wait and save up money and finish your car the way you want it. If you dont race for a little while just suck it up for the time being. All good things come in time. Again just my two cents and I really like your car so I would stick with it. Good luck on whatever you end up doing!

Thats great advice thank you. I am going to wait until sunday. I may see it and hate it. Or love it. Last time I saw it was 2001. But it looked awsome.

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

keep the sportcoupe. yours is easily the cleanest car on the site. and you know every nut and bolt. with the iroc/gn combo you're going to end up with a whole new can of worms you gotta figure out. i've pretty much decided that if i had to replace my car for some reason, it'd be something that needs a lot of work, or roller only.

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

I havn't seen the car yet. But I did get an update from my friend who just aquired it.
Said the door has a big dent in it, front spoiler looks bad, rol bar looks like crap and there are pieces missing here and there.

I am still gonna look at it but more interested in a clean turbo T/A or keeping mine. I took mine out today for the first time all year and it's pretty sick on the street.

Thanks for the advice!

I would keep what you have too. Chances are you will find more than you initially think to change or fix with the other car. You have a great car, sounds like a step backwards to me especially if it has a good size dent it it.

Sounds like we're all on the same page. Knowing myself, I'd always be happier with something that I know every inch of and made as much like _I_ wanted it as I could at the time.

The other car, even if it's a cool setup you're always going to run into "what the hell were they thinking..." when you tear into it, and there will always be some frustration with it till you put as much work into it as your current car.

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

I have passed on the idea but am now working on a new one.

I may sell my motor and trans (carb to pan turn key) and try to use the money to put together a grand national motor for my car. The key is my brother has a complete doner car and a whole combination just sitting.
( TE-44, 42lbs injectors, full harness with ECM and chip all went low elevens in his 3600lbs GN)

He has offered every possible part I need plus the help installing and the tunning for $2000!

If I can get enough for my motor that may leave me with the funds to get a good rear as well.

What do you guys think my motor is worth in todays market? It has 20 passes on it and about 800 street miles. 383, Good bottom end, AFR heads, Pro systems carb, etc....runs on pump fuel and has full documentation. Can even talk to the builder. No issues. built for 200 shot which I have and can include. Is $5000 unreasonable???

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

I again would say spend the 2000 on a rear end on your current setup instead of another motor. Why buy a motor that runs low elevens when your already pretty well into the 10's and you have a 200 shot!. A nasty little 383 will sound so much better then a GN motor but that is just my preference I guess. Most people put SBC's into import cars but not small displacement motors with turbos into muscle cars. Kinda backwards to me.

When it comes to your motor I think 5000 is a little too much because a buyer will always be skeptical about a race motor and how much of a beating it already has on it no matter what you tell them. I definitly think there is well over 5000 in it though just not sure if you could get it. Good luck either way man!

I had to let my forged bottom end 4 bolt main block professionally assembled 383 shortblock go for 2000 bucks with the custom cam, but no other cam accessories like chain/timing cover/etc. I was hoping to get 2500 for motor alone since it was worth every bit of that.

Its a shame because they were so scared of the 10 nitrous shots I ran thru it at the track and a few short pulls on the street. That motor was just becoming alive and was in great shape. market wasnt there for it.

Your motor complete like that would be an easy 5 grand. ANyone who knows sbc's would consider that as a great deal.

Re: Possible car trade. Post your opinions

Yeah, your motor may very well be worth $5k, but from my experience, it's always very difficult selling a motor like yours for what it's worth. That is unless you know somebody who knows the motor and is willing to shell out the money for it. I'm afraid I have to agree with gtpro700 when it comes to swapping out a nasty built 383 for a 3.8 ltr V6. (even though it does have a turbo) I'm all for doing and having something different, but I would keep what you have and get the 9" for it down the road.
