How much hp to run an 8.99?

I have high expectations for my combo but based on its performance the last few times out at the track i got a feeling I'm a long way off from having a chance at 8.99, but its not that I designed the setup to do 8's. It was only to be a 9 second runner. I just get greedy.

Just curious how much hp do you need to go from a high 9's car at 140-141 mph to touch an 8.99 and not do it on 60 ft alone?

I really just want to break 150mph traps and see how much more I can get out of this combo.

I'm going to be dyno tuning my setup sometime in the near future (maybe next week, maybe 2 weeks, hopefully) and I want to have an idea what I need to do to ever have a chance at 8's. I got a feeling I dont have enough turbo or cam/head to make it there but in time I will upgrade. Just not for alittle while.

I definately know I do not have the launch. I leave off footbrake with no boost and go from there. I have been thinking of spraying a 50-100 shot off the line just to get me going since I have no trans brake. I think a quick shot for a 1.4x 60 will already shave 2-3 tenths off my 9.8's easily which puts me around 9.5's easily with this mph.

My best run to date on pump gas was a 9.86 at 141mph with an estimated 650-660whp on mustang dyno. 60 foot was 1.56 or so, so its leaving soft. (NO T BRAKE) Roughly 3550lb race weight (estimate)

I think this car has 750whp in it on 15 psi and good tune and tighter converter, but that may be abit optimistic the more I think about it. I was hoping for 800whp on 18-19psi and pump gas. If not, i'll need meth injection. Dont want to go race gas yet.

In a perfect world, lets say I get from 650 to 800whp. Thats like a 150 shot. I think the best I can do with that is to go from 140mph to 148mph since most 150 shot setups gain near 10 mph in the 10-12 second ET class. Once you get in the 9's and faster, 150 shots dont get you as far. Most 8second runs are 152-158mph range.

Do I really need another 100 hit? What would a typical 150 hit do on a mid 9 second 140-142mph trap car? Greezemonkey I see hit a progressive 350 (I think) shot to go from 149 to 158mph and 8.81. I dont think I have the combo to make this power. Sounds like a trans brake and real rear end should be in my future

at your weight (3550) you will probably need about 950whp to break into the 8's

If you are adding nitrous remember that you will yield more hp than a N/A setup due to the cooling effects on the turbo IAT's.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

I was considering adding a small shot, 50-75 just to help the car get off the line quicker. I dont think I would spray the whole run but that may not be a bad idea. I just hope the distribution is good. A trans brake will ultimately be the ET gainer, but its just not for me yet. I should have had one put in while i had the trans out this winter but decided not to.

Your 60ft is killing you more than anything. cars going in the 6.30's/9.80s should atleast be in the high 1.30's low 1.40's 60ft.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

This thing leaves as hard as a bolt on L98 with good converter My 383 on motor would do low 1.50's with out much effort. I miss the 1.4's i had on that nitrous motor. Didnt pull wheels but that was a RUSH.

I am anxious to try my new C5 brakes and brake boosting if i can. My stockers would push thru at near 3000 rpm on the foot brake and I need 3200-3400 to see a hit of boost I think. I hope these 12.8" disks can hold abit longer.

Considering this car has a 2.73 gear 26" tire with Th400 first gear, it comes off so slow but booost comes on fairly quickly so first half of the 60 is pathetic but 8-10psi is hit before you know it and that makes up for the last half of the 60 and I can get my high 1.5's low 1.6's out of it.

Thats why I'm wondering if I hold a 1.5 60 foot, how much more top end do i need to get deep into the 9's possible 8.99? I am starting to see it could take well over 900whp to do so.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

Just install the transbrake so you can build some boost off the line. 60ft gain, and top end gain from one simple install. My buddies car picked up over 2 tenths from footbraking to the trans brake.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

Yeah I realize there is so much to be gained with a T brake. My stock rear definately wont like that. I'm sure if I set the brake to 3800, i'd get near 8-10psi off the launch and run 1.3's for sure if it hooked. That 2 tenth in 60 could be close to .4 on the big end.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

spend on the money on the good rearend and the transbrake. it'll cost you less to get the car out of the hole quickly and reliably than it would to try to make up 12 more mph on top of what you're already doing.

I had that shifter for years and loved it. Although with the RMVB I run the magnum grip pro stick instead presently.

This one still has the forward shift pattern, where 1 is all the way back, 2 is forward, etc. I like the hurst 1/4 stick but this shifter is also nice.

That just made you cross the line from street car to race car! Take it back out! J/K.

One think you might consider especially with the new brakes, hook up a line lock to all 4 brakes and a 2 step, set to as high as you can without car moving like 3k.. Now the throttle blades will be wide open at the line and probably allow you some boost - you will have more exhaust flow as well.. Good chance it will get a few PSI, just a matter of the throttle body allowing it.

My Vega hits 9.0s at 149, I would say you need 154 mph, I think 1005 flywheel will get you there, so roughly 805 wheel HP.

Re: How much hp to run an 8.99?

Cant wait to try it out next thursday weather permitting. I need to work on my tune right where the brake stalling is up around 2800-3200 rpm and near 90-100KPA map. Its just before I get to boost and its abit rich I believe so its not helping me spool those turbos at that point. Hopefully a little tweaking there combined with better brakes i will see some psi at launch. But I know its never gonna be like a t-brake.
