i gotta lsx block im looking to build up... i love drifting around though but never really have in anything more than 300hp... how much is too much hp to still be able to control your car in drifting fashion... anyone have any experience or do this competitively

 

What's the issue? A BBC will put about 100-150 pounds more weight on the front of the car compared to an iron head SBC. Some heavier spring rate springs should be used to reduce body roll. A heavier front sway bar will also help.

Put some aluminum heads and intake on the BBC and it comes close to the weight of an iron head SBC.

 

well i have an lsx tall deck but im wondering is there a point where if you get too much power its really not possible to do controlled drifting

 

i just got the block i have yet to really do any work on the car yet... im just trying to plan everythign out for the ground up build. i wanna be able to drag it but at same time i looove drifting and im not sure if there is a point that is too much where drifting is just improbable

 

my friend is a drifter and has a 240sx he is only making 200 hp or so its more about gear and torque it doesnt take much to get sideways

 

yeah im just wondering if there is a limit i should set on torque and horsepower so i can still have fun... but i also wanna drag it so im trying to figure out what number would work best for all

 

Drag and drift are completely opposite purposes. Kinda hard to build a car for both.

 

oh yeah i mean it doesnt have to be full fledged one way or other but i'd like to be able to do both. . well aware the suspension will be completely aftermarket. just trying to find out if there is too much power for a drifting car is all im curious about. and if there say is a wheel size thats too big or if that really doesnt have anything to do with it. trying to decide tween 10 or 12. im also not sure if a turbo is a very smart idea for that as well. id love a turbo for driving around but idk might really mess up drifting

 

saw a supra drift car awhile back with an 88mm turbo and everything else possible. he had a wheel/tire sitting beside the car that had been shredded drifting, but only the inner 1/4 of tread was worn off. the outside of the tire still looked new. the car had so much negative camber, it rode on the inside edges of the tires.... i was thinking wtf does he need 800hp to spin the equivalent of 2 doughnut spares?
drifting is pretty retarded altogether, imo. it came and went.

 

Fastest way around a corner on pavement isn't by spinning the tires. Drifting isn't about speed, acceleration or handling. It's all about controlled slides which is more for show than performance.

Flipping the back end of the car around a hair pin turn to shorten a turning radius is completely different from drifting. Long sweeping turns while spinning the tires on pavement is strictly for show. Doing it on dirt however is mandatory as it's the easiest way to get around corners when there isn't any traction. Ask any rally car or dirt track driver or watch the movie Cars.

 

oh ofcourse but its still a blast and different type of a rush. and i'd love to be able to do that.. not competition wise but occasionally on streets i'd like to and be able to have good control

Why are you worrried about having to much power? The more power and torque you have the easier it will be to break the tires loose. Once they are broke loose you will drive with the throttle as much as you do with the wheel.

 

is it possible to drift with a twin turbo? i mean if that kicks in that would be alot of power coming mid drift which i'd assume would really complicate things or send you into a spin. idk i've never drifted around with any huge power or turbo.

 

the import guys are drifting with 88's on supras and they are pretty laggy. i dont think they ever see below 4k rpms though during a run, so i doubt spooling is an issue.
