Either this Guy was scared to push his shiny new car to its limits or he was giving it his all. I took him on with my 89 Fire Bird which is mostly stock except for a few minor mods which include: some suspension lowering componants, ram air cold air intake. 4 wheel disk brakes (BAER), custom prom with no rev limiter. and Cyberdyne digital gauges.
We were racing to top speeds and he gave up at 160mph and backed off at 180mph.
It was the first time i ran this car over 100 and it was far faster than i ever anticipated. im still in shock that i could run with an Integra
anyone else have any V-6 kills or speed runs?? Post your top speeds please...

i did almost 180 with my dad in a zr1 one time. It was not even close to stock and we were at some race track in Kentucky because his friend works there. We were clocked at like 174 or so. They made us wear helmets too, like if we hit a wall in a zr1 at 175 a helmet would save us.
I'm not sure what this zr1 had done to it, but sure was fun.

what can I really say.. aside from BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....
it's been proven that 600hp or DAMN close to it need to be hitting THE GROUND for a car over 3000lbs to hit or NEAR 200mph..180 is getting DAMN close. I have only been in one car capable of this. Callaway ZR1, 212mph.. and it's left front light bulb is worth more than this Type R and your back to the future fast 2.8.. hope you didn't overheat your flux capacitor on that one man..
but I guess this is like that time John Hennessey asked me to race his new Venom 650 Viper in my stock RS on the airstrip next to his facility in Houston.. I left him like 9 car lengths.. I shut her down at 230, I didn't want to shame him that badly.

Hey everyone your Welcome for the laughs. to answer a few of your concerns. I knew how fast I was going because i have a certified 200mph digital speedo gauge. I never told you that the Engine was a gm performace parts all alluminum engine. I also didnt mention that most of the body on the car is now carbon fiber. there is only one seat left in the interior. My front suspenion setup is totally custom. Its is an double upper lower A-arm coil over set up taken from a NASCAR desing. It is made of entirely cnc'd titanium. Now Ill tell all of you that my Hp output at speed is somewheres above 290 burning CAM 2 racing fuel. I am currently working on a methanol setup. And my bird weighs no wheres near 3000 lbs it sits just over 1750lbs race ready. Im sorry I mislead you guys there was no pun intended I promise. And just for the record that car when it was totally stock minus the speed limiter and rev limiters ran top out at 119mph and that was full factory weight too.

No offense but an all aluminum (????) mostly stock (as you said in the subject) 2.8 liter would never come close to 200mph. ESPECIALLY without forced induction. It doesnt make any sense to spend the money on a carbon fiber /titanium body if your going to put a 2.8 liter mostly stock motor in...???

You guys just dont know what real speed is and what the word Efiecency means. You also make 180 mph sound untouchable. My 92 3000gt VR4 does 170 and its totally stock(it also weighs in over 3550lbs) Oh and yeah its also a v-6 (3.0) not much bigger than a 2.8 So If I were you guys I would stop laughing at a v-6 that really can perform. Its not impossible to make a car fast on v-6 power.

sorry, but GM doesnt even make heavy performance parts of the 2.8, seeing as that it was designed as an economy engine, DUH! All aluminum? BS! and sure your VR4 might be quick as hell, but its TWIN TURBO! I wont believe your 180 mph story unless your runnin a quad turbo on that lowsy 2.8....sorry, just not gonna belive it. You might wanna check your calibration on that speedo of yours.

Maybe they raced off a cliff inside a vacuum. Than they could exceed terminal velocity and let the hevier car win, IE camaro.
And you are going to need more than 290 hp to get to 180. It doesn't matter if your car weighs 1700 or so pounds the gears you would need to run are way to big for a 2.8 to handle. You would have to have a humongus 5th gear to climb to that speed. Integra going 160? yea right. I do give him credit for the VR4. Those are pretty quick and can run with fourth gens. But I don't think 170mph. Get your speedo's recalibrated.
I went 200 once and I beat GT40....but then I woke up

My car absolutely tops out at about 115. I had to use a math formula to figure this out, even, since my speedo only goes to 85. I entered all my gear ratios and stuff then I knew I was doing 3500 RPM in overdrive! came out to something like 114 point something. Also, at this speed, every single part on my car vibrates, not to mention the H rated tires could have exploded.(hehe) I seriously doubt a stock firebird, or even a stock vette could handle worth a sh*t at 180 mph.

Sorry to get techy, but terminal velocity is when an object reaches it's maximum velocity falling because air resistance upwards equals the the mass of the object times gravity downwards (the object is in equilibrium and thus has no acceleration).<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by ShiftyCapone:

If the car's were falling in a perfect vaccum, there would be no air molecules, therefore there would be no air resistance and both the integra and the camaro would fall at 9.81m/s^2, or, in english units, 32.2ft/s^2.
P.S.-I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering

By the way, I hate to break it to you (and especially somone of your expertise on cars and the word "Efiecency", LOL), but the weight of a car has little to do with top speed. Once you start reaching speed's that high, it's all about aerodynamics, in which you would need more than a lightweight body and a mythical Gm performance parts V-6 to achieve 180mph (before you let off.....hahaha), you'd need some serious body work, not only to clean things up aerodynamically, but to keep that lightweight 1700lb race ready firebird(were you running this thing on the street? Love to see how you made it street legal...) from taking flight...straight up into the air. On a firebird, with everything on the body smoothed out, it would still take about 320rwhp (with EVERYTHING on the car set up JUST for top speed.), conservitavely, to pull 180mph max, nevermind just letting up at 180mph.
Why don't you just admit that you were caught in a not even remotely realistic lie, made a GIANT A$$ of yourself, and get on with things....
OH WAIT! You have a custom prom with NO REV LIMITER, 4 wheel disc brakes, and DIGITAL GAUGES?!?!? I'm sorry....I was wrong about everything...silly me!
By the way, a stock 91 3000gt Vr4 tops out at 155 and weighs in at a little over 3800 pounds....

Maybe you'll now understand why I went to the extremes that I have. Its a good tool for research.

Hey you guys, its possible, I have a 1992 grand am that is running a very efficient 2 cylinder snowmobile engine with 8 turbos and a hell of a lot of stickers. This motor puts me at 150 and I have nowhere near the engine this guy has. Plus, all those stickers do weigh me down a WHOLE lot and i dont have a fiber body. You know, JJ, if you ever need some help, i can show you some amazing rice extraction techniques for fuel additives that can increase horses more than an absurdly large exhaust tip connected to a dime sized exhaust system.
