No, they are not supposed to be that slow.
The first thing I would do is work on the
carbs secondaries. Read Damons and Eds tech articles on how to do it......

Don't feel bad.. I only ran a 16.1 with my 85 L69 5 speed with 3:73 posi. only mods are K&N, gutted cat, and hooker catback exhaust. I only got to make 2 passes though and my clutch linkage broke. I couldn't get traction and my shift points were wrong... I think I should be able to get high 14's out of it once I get the hang of it.

I had a 84 Camaro Sport Coupe that had an L69 that the previous owner put in. It had an open 3.08 rear and an Auto. The best I could get out of it was a 16.07 in the 1/4. Sounds like your times are about right.

The L69 Z28s ran low 15s off the showroom floor. The T/As are slower because they don't have the dual snorkel intake and they weigh more. Still, you should be able to get it to do about 15.5 just by repairing whatever is wrong with it.

Start with a tune-up including finding the optimum timing; rebuild the carb; make sure the cat or the rest of the exhaust isn't plugged up.

As far as mods, a set of headers such as TES or SLP would be the first thing, closely followed by a cam. I'd recommend a Comp XE262 with 1416 1.6 roller-tip rockers, and new valve springs. If you pop the heads off and do a simple bowl job on them at the same time as those other 2 things, you should pick up a good 65 HP.

There are so many variables here that could be affecting your et. I would start by looking at your 60' times as they will reveal how much tire spin and how your launches are. How hot was the tempurature outside when you raced? This is a big factor and can account for 2/10's of a second, give or take. Which would bring you down to 15.7, which is to date my best time with my '87, stock IROC-Z with a 305 auto TPI. I have the new Catco high flow cat with the Flowmaster System, K & N filters. If you are using a Hypertech chip, take it out and run your car and I think you will see a 2-3/10's of a second improvement. Unless you have ram air, the chip could be hurting your times. It did with mine, I have the slips to prove it. I have been told the same thing by the veterans at the track. All the other "stock" cars similiar to what you and I have run in the mid to high 15's. On a hot night expect even to get 16.0. Don't worry about it, your times are right within where they should be for stock or near stock. Do you have an auto or manual. A manual is good for a little better et's as well.
