Trans blanket or shield??

Has anyone used a trans blanket or shield with stock floorboards and a Turbo 350? How did it fit, what brand did you use?

Re: Trans blanket or shield??

I had an rci blanket on my th400 for a day or two. My exhaust was too close and burnt it up. I know some folks use the nice csr carbon shields with good luck.

Re: Trans blanket or shield??

I had the csr one, the bell housing bolts are a pita to get to. I'd do an ultra bell and a separate trans shield. Wanna say I'm using a tci one with my glide.

Re: Trans blanket or shield??

CSR full shield on my car but I also have a modified firewall and trans tunnel which makes accessing the bellhousing bolts a lot easier.

If you need a trans shield, you'll also require a flexplate shield. Even though using a blanket is easy, fitting a flexplate shield is normally difficult no matter what type or style you use.

As mentioned above, an UltraBell is the way to go if you can afford one but it still needs to be recertified or replaced every 5 years just like a trans/flexplate shield if you're running quick enough to require the shields.

Re: Trans blanket or shield??

Csr shield on my th400. Slight clearancing on firewall/trans tunnel, but fits great, once you grind down the trans casting bosses as needed

Also had to trim the shield around the cooler outlet lines.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BOLT TRANS TO MOTOR BEFORE INSTALLING. If you are lucky enough to have motor out the car. that was easy. I have no idea how to install those bolts if you didnt atleast move the motor or seriously mod firewall/tunnel. Stock bolts were hard let alone an inch or so longer bolts

I think every CSR shield is like that. The cooler line opening sucks. You need to modify the opening to run the cooler lines properly. Once the shield has been modified, you can't recertify it.

Not like the shield will fail to protect you after the SFI tag expires in 5 years. I have yet to see any tech inspector climb under a weekend bracket car to see if the required shield has a valid SFI decal on it. Running in national or divisional races however, they may just do that.

I really should get one of those Ultrabell bellhousings for my glide. With no rear trans mount, all the weight of the transmission is hanging off 6 bolts and a weak bellhousing casting. Not that the powerglide is very heavy to begin with.

Re: Trans blanket or shield??

What is the ET / MPH requirement for actually needing a trans shield?

forget I asked here is the NHRA rule:

Transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1 mandatory on any car running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker or any car exceeding 135 mph (217.2 km/h).

Automatic transmission flex plate meeting SFI Spec 29.1 and flex plate shield meeting SFI Spec 30.1 mandatory on cars running 9.99 (*6.39) or quicker or any car exceeding 135 mph (217.2 km/h). See General Regulations 2.14.

No brainer to me and looks to be the best one to use from the clearance and weight standpoint.

also I see a cut out on the right side for the cooler lines? I am going to see if I can find other views of this piece.

I should be running 10s ETs so better safe than sorry...

I have the engine out of the car so now is the time to do it..
