Cam slection help

I am a little confused on what cam to get, so I could us some advice.
The car is a 91 305 tpi 5 speed with headers and 3 inch exhaust with no cat. It is a weekend curser and I take it to the strip when I get the chance (about 4 to 5 times a year). I am going to be putting in comp 918 springs in rebuilt heads with full roller rockers and hardened pushrods. Comp recommended computer controlled 276HR-14(http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=214&sb=2). It looks good in duration and lift but the lsa looks a bit wide at 114 deg. SO I was wondering if this would be a good cam for my car or will I be disappointed? Thanks for the help.

So I sort of hate to be this guy. But I'd save your pennies and throw that 305 in the trash. A 350 makes a world of difference.

Hey no hard feelings. That is the logical thing to do, but I want to keep the car original. Plus its fun to beat guys with a 305.

It's a huge cam for a stock TPI. In a 305 with stock TPI hardware, it will have an extremely narrow powerband. The 114 LSA will help some, but not much.

If you have aftermarket base & runners along with a ported plenum, or a Stealth Ram, it might have a chance.

You aren't keeping it "original".

Delusion is a powerful drug.

Re: Cam slection help

So five7, you would recommend going with something with less duration like the 08-304-8? Which is very similar but with less duration and slightly less lift.

I don't think that I would go bigger than the 08-302-8 cam in a 305. 08-501-8 is also a good choice. If you are keeping the 305 it is obvious you are not going to be getting into 1/4 racing so that cam would be at home in a weekend cruiser or even an autocross car.

Re: Cam slection help

Thanks, that is very helpful. I was thinking the recommendation from comp was a little big. This car is mostly a cruiser that see the strip every once and a while. Out of those two cams what one would be better? The computer controlled has a little bit more duration on the exhaust side but the extreme energy has more lift.

If you have a good exhaust setup I would choose the Extreme Energy, otherwise their computer controlled.

Re: Cam slection help

If you want to keep original than do a set of 1.6 rockers, runners and U/D pulleys. That will wake it up, is easier to do and will keep everything "original". If it were me I would put the motor and trans in storage and swap in a 5.3 and T56, lol.

Too big for stock tpi and stock heads ... thats bigger than my cam and I have trick flow 175cc heads on my 305 ... my cam is 214/218 @ .050 and .488/.495 lift on a 114 lsa but I'm using ,1.6 RR ... I can roast tires in 2nd gear at a 20-30 mph roll ... with 265/45/18's (10" tread) ....

Edit: and my cam pulls good to 6k in a 305 .. so whatever the advertised power band is add 500rpm to it for a 305

Re: Cam slection help

Thanks everybody you guys rock!
Hey sleeper how do you like those heads trick flow heads? I am looking at them but I am having a hard time justifying the price.
I have shorty Edelbrock headers to a 2.5" y pipe then 3" hooker exhaust. Also I am planning on getting 1.6 full roller rockers and hardened pushrods when I put the cam in.

The heads are REALLY NICE ! And if u decided to go with a 350 down the road they will still work great with a 350 up to probly 500 HP or so ... I should have went with a slightly bigger cam to take full advantage of the heads tho ... but it runs REALLY strong for a 305 and I still get 20+mpg with 4.10 gears if I keep it under 65mph ... I have already smoked a stock L98 car and it slowly pulled away from a new 5.0 mustang on the highway from 60mph up to about 100 and I let off and i was shifting at 5k and that was a month ago .. it is tuned a little better now than it was then and now I shift at 5800-6k
