Anyone have access to a car lift?

My car is leaking oil from the oil pan edge, and it looks like I just need to replace the gasket (at least I hope that's it). It would be alot easier with the car lifted though. Sooo.... back to the topic title: Anybody have access to such a thing? I'd be more than willing to :hail: or even dance like :lala: in return!

Never mind, I have it up far enough to see that it is not coming from the oil pan area, it is coming from the engine somewhere, and then dripping down and dropping on the ground from several points. Now I wish I had the know-how to tear things apart and see what's causing this. Grrr, frustrating.

hope its not your rear main, i bet its the valve covers, or the oil pressure sending unit, also check the back of the distributor, the gasket might be bad for some reason and might leak there.

good luck.

I don't know where to even start (heck I don't know where the things are you just mentioned), and unfortunately I have to leave for work in an hour so I can't fix it today. It is running fair, though it sometimes drops to a really low idle after it warms up now (at intersections, or when going under 10mph). I will try not to drive it more than absolutely neccessary until I can try to figure out where it's leaking.

It seems to be coming from the mid to rear of the engine almost at the bottom. The engine and everything under it is just coated in oil. It's not pretty.

Time for me to get out the Haynes and Chiltons books and learn up quick. Of course I had 4 of the last 5 days off, but it decided to break when I have to work 5 straight, lol.

umm... of all the listed possible gaskets, I think the oil pan gasket would be the worst to do. So, if it's any consolation, be happy that it ISN'T the oil pan gasket. The rear main is a breeze (esp. if you have a manual tranny and a one piece rear main) in comparison... and so are the valve cover gaskets. I've never had to get to the rear main with the automatic tranny, so I can imagine that it's just a little bit more work. But still..

If it is indeed the rear of the intake manifold that's leaking, then you can always start doing some port work to the plenum and base plate.

Well, I'm quickly learning how useless Haynes and Chilton's are. Unfortunately, my RS has an auto tranny and two piece main, it sounds like.

I kinda doubt that it's the rear main though, since I see lots of oil on both sides of the engine down low.

...then you can always start doing some port work to the plenum and base plate.
Sounds cool to me. What does it involve? Sorry I'm such a stupid newbie, I am still learning alot everyday about engines and our cars.

Sounds like fun to me! What advantage is there to porting those areas? Better flow through the engine?

I am going to take the hood off for better access and then really try to figure out exactly where the leak is originating. I will probably have to disassemble the engine to some degree, so I might as well do some improvements while I have the engine torn apart.

Hey thanks for the idea! I hadn't even considered cleaning it (because it's soooo dirty) until you suggested it. The grime/oil/goop that's caked on the underside of the engine looks like I may have to borrow the powerwasher from my store after I get off work tonight. That is the only thing that would really cut through all that gunk, I bet.

HP bug? Must've got me when I wasn't looking, lol. I could certainly afford to have some more ponies running loose in there, since my mighty 191ci engine is listed at 140hp (stock). I hate the fact my wife has more hp in her Ford, lmao.

lol, I greatly appreciate any and all help! I couldn't powerwash it to remove the grime/oil mix (the washer was missing a piece). I will try it with the regular hose and some degreaser at home, see how it goes.

The SES light came on once on the way to work, then again on the way home tonight. The CPU stores the error codes doesn't it? I can't remember exactly how to pull the codes, so I will search for that info in the morning, it's too late now (3:30am).

I would definitely be up for some beefing up of my suspension and some major power-enhancing as soon as I fix this, so if anyone has advice I am sure listening. The one thing I know is to always listen to those who have forgotten more than I will probably ever learn about something, lol.

to pull the codes you put a paperclip between the two upper right aldl connection, and then turn the car to the 'on' position (do not start the car) , it will then flash the codes at you.

as for the 'fun' suggestions. since you aren't blessed with a full engine go TURBO!!!!
