Looking for a few good parts:

I've just bought an '82 firebird over the internet. Right now, the car is in Honolulu, I'm in Nebraska, and I'm headed to school in Hilo.

I'm looking for a few parts to fix it up a little bit. It's missing the Passenger side mirror, I'm told the seats leave a lot to be desired, and I can see that the bottom of the door panels are rusting out.

I was hoping to find whatever parts I could and stick them in or on the car before I have Young Brothers ship it to Hilo. Anybody have a parts car/spare parts lying around? The car is black right now, but I'll take whatever I can get in the way of parts. I'm not looking to restore it to mint, but I would love if it looked a little bit better. (In other words, I'm not looking to put a huge amount of money into this car, but I'm not expecting handouts either.)

I helped a friend look for parts for an '88 firebird last semester on the Big Island without luck, so I don't hold out much hope for finding parts for my car on the island.

Thanks ahead of time,
Jon

I've yet to do so, but the Schofield Barracks and other military salvage yards got some deals on parts cars. Duck and a few other guys go there a lot, and yank parts. Are you looking for body panels or internal stuff? I only wish I could find a parts car with a stroked-out L98 and a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it, but then again, I never look, so serves me right.

Mirrors are everywhere. You can get good seats eventually; though, you'll probably need to give them a good cleaning.

Can you ship cars with junk in it? I thought the cars had to be emptied (including the fuel tank) before it can be shipped.

Most of that would only take a few minutes anyway. I've got to swap a few parts for my buddy's turbo regal being shipped next month.

Are power vs manual mirrors different? Either way, you'll find 'em easy.

YB will ship with things in the car no higher than the windows... When my co-worker moved back to Hilo, he had all kinds of crap stuffed into his '87 Cutlass...

The isuue with nothing in the car is for out of state shipping (Matson/Horizon)

How hard are doors to swap? Isn't it just a matter of pulling hinge pins and disconnecting electrical wiring and swapping them?

I was hoping that would be the case...Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

easier, IMHO, to pull the entire hinge (unbolt) but other opinions may vary...

the GTA I have is pretty rotten... pics are under a thread here someplace...

wiring is a PITA, though... there is no bulkhead connector like G bodies... so everything must be disconnected then run through the hole, the routed into the new doow...

Got another request. Does anyone have a spare headlamp motor or know how to/whether it's worth fixing them?

Thanks,
Jon

Can get a couple for you. Used.

Irocnroll89 (Shawn) might be able to answer your headlight questions. He was tellin' me some useful stuff that I didn't write down and, of course, forgot.

Don't know about doors, but you could just cut the wiring and crimp some connectors on them if that's easier.

Shawn (crazyhawaiian) might have picked up some 4th gen T/A seats, so he may or may not have a decent set to get rid of... pm Crazyhawaiian.

Can't really tell you, as far as the 82 headlight motors. I rebuilt 2 sets of 89 motors.
One set I used 3/8" glue sticks, and the other i sprung for the TOP DOWN SOLUTION KIT.
His kits is thorough. Shipping was great. I might be more inclined next time to use a HOME DEPOT nylon spacer. They were like 90 cents for 3, and at a 1.80 and a tube of lithium, you couild get by at about 6 bucks. Tuff call. I will try to be around more . shawn

Shawn,

I sent you PM regarding the shifter plate cover... it seems it was in the car, under the broken muffler...

not cracked, but has some scratches that should polish out...

if you need it, let me know... I'm looking for a bigger box as we speak...

That was the whole point -- in most cases it's not economically feasible for sellers of large and/or heavy parts to send them to Hawaii. A like-new dash pad, for example, would sell here for about $50 with no shipping expense. Packing and shipping a dash pad to Hawaii by air transport would cost another $40-50.

That's why out-state-sellers should not jump into other regional forums to sell their stuff. Members of the various forums use the classified forum to post buy and sell to a wide-area market.

Another option is to PM a potential buyer, IF that person has expressed a need for the part you're selling.
