Twin Turbos

Has anyone ever seen or had a twin turbo Camaro or Firebird? I was wondering because I would like to put twin turbos on my Camaro. I have a TPI 350. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanx

I have twins on my car, I don't know if I can help you because my car was built with all the good internals, I don't know if you are looking for boltons to your stock block or not.

Good luck

Hasn't Banks been saying they're releasing the kit in a few months for 3 years now?

Yes. Chances are its not going to come out and people are going to have to do what they've been doing, which is homebrew stuff.

The Callaway hood has air ducts to route cold air to the intercoolers. Some has visible air intakes and some take air from in front of the radiator.

There is some recent written topics (in the last couple of months) about the banks TT kits being re-releasd on their website!..There is also a few pics of the kit on dyno and in a few test vehicles.Anybody really think that Banks does NOT have the ability to get it done?....don't think so!...they are masters, maybe slow masters, but masters all the same

I'm checking their website now. Do you have any links to this?

Thanks

I personally think that Banks is working on a "modular" kit, one that fits a few different chassis (maybe F, G, & Y) and doesn't require totally different parts for each one. If this is true, then you could buy an F body kit, use it for a while, remove it, and buy a few parts to fit in in a Vette or Monte SS. That would be excellent and proof that Banks is looking forward.

Here you go boys: straight from the Banks' website

Given the response, maybe I shouldn't have said anything. But after my mention that we had a twin turbo, EFI 350 V8 up and running on our dyno (Twin Turbos are Back? 08/09/02), I've been deluged with emails asking for more details and when such systems will be available. Here are a couple of examples:

There is an overwhelming interest in the twin turbo systems you are working on. The V8 community is going crazy for the possibility of this getting to market for the late model Camaro/Firebirds and Corvettes. My question to you is, will the system you are currently working on be adaptable to the newer vehicles with some modification? There is an enormous amount of people who would want this system if it can be made to work or if it is being designed to fit these newer cars. Nobody to this point (except Lingenfelter—way expensive) has developed a system, and you could easily have the entire market if it will work or if it can be adapted to fit without too much modification. Please let me know at your convenience, because so many owners of Tuned Port, LT1, and LS1 type engines are just chomping at the bit to get something so awesome as this would be.

Terry Downs, via email

In the '60s I was too young and too poor to race, but I remember the Gale Banks story in all the Hot Rod magazines. Unfortunately, I find myself no longer young, but also no longer poor. My mid-life crisis is in full bloom, and I am very interested in street applications for a twin turbo 350 Chevy. I know if Banks makes one it will be high quality and reliable. What is the expected completion date for this project? I did a web search earlier this year and discovered your web site. I have been checking in periodically to read your column since. Great idea!

Jack Neu, via email

Jack, the first thing I want to know is, what in the world did you search for to find my web column—impertinent information? Foolish pleasure? Anyway, I've been getting a ton of questions about our budding re-entry into the twin turbo V8 market. But I don't have any hard or fast answers yet. Terry, we'd be foolish not to make our new systems fit late-model Camaros/Firebirds and Corvettes. That's exactly what we did last time around, even offering completely prepped late-model (F-body) twin turboed Camaros and Firebirds as rolling packages. And we have already spent considerable research and dyno time on a new LS1.

However, our current plan—in the typical Banks fashion—is to not only sell bolt-on kits, but also complete engine packages. Gale is talking very large horsepower numbers, and with two turbochargers, you can't do that with stock pistons, camshaft, heads, or valvetrain. We don't want customers scattering parts on the freeway. And that's the big reason why I can't tell you exactly when this program will be on-line,but expect to see the first kits available in Mid-2003!. We won't offer it until it's fully sourced, scienced, and tested. It will be strong and it will be reliable. I'm sure it will be designed to fit late-model small-block GM platforms, without modification. I wouldn't be surprised if a small-block Ford/Mustang application would follow. But don't ask me when. All I can say is that we have begun research on the program. The engine we have on the dyno now is far from the finalized package—it's just a prototype operational twin Turbo V8. So, like I said before, listen to Orson: there will be no twin turbo before its time. It'll be ready when it's right; and it'll be right when it's ready.
