upgraded ignition for boost?
For those of you running the 730 and 749 computers, are you upgrading the ignition for boost and at what level have you made the upgrade.
MSD 6AL- is this actually worth anything? And it runs with the EFI computers right?
thanks guys,
jay

Jay, I have a little experience with blowers, much more with nitrous. Any combination I build that's going to see massively increased cylinder pressures gets an ignition box. I am sorta "old school" so the MSD 6-series is bread-and-butter for me. My brother, who is more "progressive" in his thinking has tried several different systems including the Crane box. It worked REALLY well. Every bit as good as an MSD and it came with more built-in features, was a LOT smaller and is a full-digital system straight from Crane. Even though I didn't use it myself, I was quite impressed with it. I would have no hesitation putting it on one of my cars in the future.
There are 2 different version from Crane- one for cars with computer controlled distributors (ECM determines ignition timing) and one for older non-computer controlled distributors. They are different boxes and can not be interchanged with eachother, nor can they be "changed" from one type to the other. FYI.
A stock HEI with a better coil and module might get you by in a N/A motor up to 6500-7000 but it gets very marginal when you use a power adder. Plus, a good coil and module will set you back almost as much as a complete ignition amplifier box.

When I talked to the GN guys for my swap about the ignition. They said you don't need anything special, even if your gonna run low 11 high 10's. All the stock ignition stuff works fine. But I am not sure what engine you are running so...
If you're gonna go with MSD ignition on a boosted application, I say go with the MSD 6BTM at the very least or the Programmable Digital-7 w/Boost Retard Curve if you wanna go all out. Both offer boost timing retard that can help prevent detonation, but the Digital-7 one is waay way more accurate. If you want to get retarded (hehe) but you dont want MSD ignition, you can get the same functionality from the MSD Universal Boost Timing Master. I'm running the 6BTM with my 730 ECM in my 91Z, but it came with the Vortech Kit (S-Trim). I'm getting ready to switch to the 749 ECM so I might go with a different setup (as far as ignition). Not sure what I'm gonna do yet.

the crane boxes have infinitely adjustable rev limiter... well by incraments of 100 rpm. For example, a rev limit of 6200 is good for me but 6000 really isn't... I shift at 6 and 6200 is max recommended rpm on the crate motor.
