My new (again) setup

Hey folks.

I scrapped my '89 Formula last month (frame was all twisted beyond reasonable repair).

I picked up a '91 base model (TBI car), with a blown engine for $400. Body has some scratches, and a few dings but otherwise it's a nice car. No rot or rust.

I stripped the whole thing and undercoated it. Put my built 10 bolt in it, converted it to manual transmission (T5), repinned the '746 TBI harness to '749 for the boosted engine.

I dropped my engine in, but decided to change the intake.
I went with the Holley singleplane manifold, and Holley 4bbl 1,000cfm throttle body.

I used a ATI carb hat, but it smacked the hood. Doing searching, I found that Andres used a Turbonetics hat for his turbo setup and it cleared his hood. I think he used the dual 2.5", but I used a single 3" in.

The pipe from the blower to the TB hat is a 3" mandrel bent pipe from hooker. I welded a DSM bov flange to it, and painted it gloss black. The couplers are turbonetics, and I used those clamps with the 1/4" bolts.

I still have the intercooler, but decided not to use it. I might sell it and just go back to alky/water injection, or maybe NOS.

Here is a pic. I think it looks a lot cleaner that my previous setups, and I think the AIR-GAP designed intake, and improved injector angle might even help with power.

Comments?

This is another option if you want a low profile with a singleplane EFI manifold.

Neat stuff!

Problem with the ford TB is the IAC. I know they make an adapter, but its expencive. Thats what ruined the ford idea for me.

expensive...?? it was like $35 dollars...The Lower cost ford throttle body offsets that...LOL..

That Elbow posted above is neat in theory>>>BUT >> Explain to me How exactly your supposed to get coolant to the thermostat housing on a single plain setup.... The bottom of whats posted would leave no room for any kind of housing....So youd have to run the hacked remote mount T-stat like the LT1 conversions do...Personally I would not want it on my ride But to each their own I guess..

Was it only $35? I thought it was a lot higher.

Cost for CFM though, it didn't make sense - but that was because I got a great deal on a 4bbl unit. My holley 4bbl 1,000cfm TB and bracket was $175 shipped from a board member. I woulda paid at least that for ported stock unit, and twice that for a 90mm (or better) unit, Then had to pay for the adapter. The turbonetics hat was $98 to my door (2nd day shipping). I think the 90* adapter you showed me would have been like $200 or something crazy.

Now if I had to buy a *NEW* holley TB, it woulda been about $450 and then the ford option sounds a bit more reasonable, but still possibly more expencive.

Looks like a clean install.

F.Y.I... I have a 1000cfm Accell throttle body if anyone else is interested in doing a similar setup, I will let it go cheap.

your running that motor setup through a T5??? i thought the t5's could only handle like 310 lb/ft? i have been toying with the idea of completely changing my thirdgen into a long term project with either building a high power N/A setup or somehow running boost (most likely turbo), and i figured the first things i would do before i put the motor in would be to switch to a t-56 an stronger rear end...

There are no bad T5s. Just bad drivers. T5 is fine.

IAC is simple… most GMs use an IAC bolted in to a separate assembly on the TB, just get one from the jy, take a block of aluminum and drill 2 holes matching the in and out of the IAC assembly and a few more for the screw holes and hook it up… that’s what we did on my brother’s ford when using a haltech that expects a GM style IAC.

As far as thermostat housings… I haven’t seen many that will clear if you just make an elbow to fit straight on top of the manifold with the TB on it that will clear a firebird hood, and so far, all of the ones that I have seen have been in pictures with the owner not knowing what it was.

Well I have a 2-bay shop with lifts, air tools, press, specialty tools, welders, and all that stuff. if I was working in a driveway, it would be a winter project
