Got my 2 turbos at a yard..ID help needed.

What exactly do I have...and will they be good for my application?

I got the first one out of a Mercedes 300D turbodiesel. I assume that meant it was a 3liter...but I couldn't find anything identifying that for sure. It says AIResearch on the exaust part..but not much on the intake part. Just G1L, with a 4 under it.

The other is out of a Dodge Daytona..and says Garret A/R .47 in it.

Both spin freely, quietly..and seem to be in good shape.

Search the mini mopar pages for ID help on the chrysler turbo, You should be able to find specs, pics, etc... that will help you identify it

You're on yer own with that Mercedes turbo

Yeah,. I was able to find stuff on the Chrysler turbo, but I'm still stumped on the Mercedes. I've found out it's a garret T3 or equivilent, but the AR is a mystery

Hmmm... I dunno how to get more info on the benz turbo, but the Daytona turbo is pretty small. That .47 ar will probably let ya hit 10 lbs of boost at 1500-2500 rpms T3's are a fairly common turbo, but a T4 would be gold for ya. It's a bit larger (methinks) and very common for aftermarket turbos, so once ya work the bugs out of the low-buck turbo setup and go hunting for GT1 Porsche's, you'll be able to swap in a properly matched turbo. Just my few pennies

Well for now 10lbs is about all my motor can handle later on, when I have a forged bottom end and can run more boost, I'll go looking to upgrade

What I meant is that you'll have 10 psi at idle The exhaust is pretty small, so you'll have those turbos overspooled very quickly. I don't think you'll be able to find a wastegate large enough to keep it at 10 psi at 5000 rpms. It'll probably be 30 psi, he he he. Don't forget that a good rule of thumb for non-ideal perfect mandrel bent turbo exhausts with big turbines, you'll have roughly 2x the backpressure compared with boost. So your 20 psi turbo is 40 psi backpressure.

Ahh..I see what you're saying. Is there some sort of valve I can put on the intake pipe to bleed off extra boost?

thanks

Yes and no. If you run a pop-off valve like in IRL/CART/F1, it's all or nothing. Once it opens, it basically dumps all your boost. I guess you could figure out a way to modulate it with a soleniod and pulse control. The best way would be to have a bigass wastegate that can bleed off enough volume. If you do go with the small turbo, and bleed off the intake, your backpressures will still be astronomical (since the turbo is still putting out just as much air as previously). For hacking around, I'd say just go for it and experiment. So what if its not perfect. If you see it overboosting, just let off the gas. What I did with my setup was to set the fuel map to full rich - i.e. 100% injector duty cycle once it hits 9 psi. I have my Deltagate wastegates set at 5 psi, and on a cold day, it will overboost a lot. The super-rich mixture makes the car fall flat on its face, and is a safe way for me to know "GET OFF THE GAS!" before I pop holes in the cast pistons. I'm wrapping up the intercooler install and 9" rear, so I should be able to raise the boost a little without detonation. We'll see

Well...the plan is to use twin turbos on my carbed 350 that will be completed soon. I bought a set of S10 v8 conversion headers I'm gonna do some cutting/rewelding on, flip upside down and hang the turbos off the end of with some adapter pipes. They'll be a header collector on one end, a turbo flange on the other, and whatever shape pipe I need inbetween to locate the turbos where they will fit. I havn't decided if I'm gonna make or buy a hat for the carb. After that it's just a bunch o pipes I need to route. Well..thats pretty much the plan in a nutshell.

Right now I just have the turbos I posted about, but if your buddy has some that would be better suited, I'd be much abliged.

I'm running cast pistons too Since I'll be carbed, running on the rich side is easy too

Andris, do you have ICQ? If so, my number is 9112495...I'd love to get some pointers from ya.

JESTER, Ill try to get one or two for "experimental" purposes, ill throw them at you to fool with if I can
nothing better suited though., they are all pretty much stock, with a little adjustment to a 4cyl advantage
