smokin' turbo!

well, it looks like i'm going to have to take my passenger side turbo off and have a turbo shop rebuild it. i think the oil ring in it has gone bad--i'm getting smoke out of the passenger side exhaust. since it did this before the engine rebuild, i know it's coming from the turbo. also, my piston rings have had plenty of time to seat. hopefully this won't keep me down too long--just gotta decide whether to find a local turbo-diesel shop (?) or to send the turbo to Turbo City, etc. anyone know how much i'm looking at if they just need to replace an oil ring?

Hmmm... Check your oil drain return line. Biggest problem is backed up oil that can't drain properly. It can't go anywhere except back through the turbo. Cross your fingers, dude!

hmmm... thanks for the input! i'll check that... i don't know exactly what can go wrong with the drain though. i've got bungs on each side of the oil pan, at the same height. only my passenger side turbo is smoking. could i run the drain line over to the other side (driver's side) in an attempt to narrow down the problem?

thanks!

Don't your turbos join together before the throttle body? IF so, then one bad turbo would cause smoking out of both exausts. Smoking out of only one side would be an engine problem. I don't remember your setup that well..so I could be wrong.

Jester, the turbos aren't plumbed into the throttle body right now. they are just mounted on the exhaust and the oil lines are hooked up. my old intake tubes won't fit any more since i changed intake manifolds (went from TPI to miniram).

but i'm 99% sure that it's not an engine problem. the smoking was present before i did the engine rebuild and now after putting the new engine in, it's still there (on the same side). i really think it's the oil ring inside the turbo, or as GMI mentioned, it could be an oil drainage problem on the return line. i'll check out the return lines and if necessary swap turbos to see if the smoking switches to the other side...

thanks!

Uh, Jester, each turbo has it's own exhaust port. If he has true dual exhaust, then it could smoke out of one pipe...

I am having my turbo rebuilt now and I was told that it might cost me $400.00. It is being donw thru a friend who owns me. He sent it to Turbonetics and they are enlarging both sides and some other custom stuff.

You can rebuild one yourself if you are good mechanically and like doing that stuff. The kit you need is not that expensive. Call those places and get quotes from them.

I believe Applied Technologies is down in Sout Carolina. If you need a number I will look it up for you tomorrow.

Twin Turbo 358: Please, please, please tell me you were a good boy and rerouted your oil feed line like I told you! That would have huffed the passenger turbo in 2 minutes flat.

GMI, no i haven't changed the oil lines yet, but i assure you it's on the list! the engine was run (before the rebuild) for 13k miles, and the smoking didn't start until just before i tore it down to do the rebuild.
