Turbo question

i keep switching back and forth between wanting an ATI procharger or a turbo...i'm stuck in the middle....how much work/labor is involved in the plumbing for a turbo? can anyone give me cost estimates on a single turbo setup?

There is a lot of plumbing. If you have a custom turbo setup done by a professional (proper), you can spend between $5000 to $10,000 depending on components used. We twin-turboed a Viper back in 1995 and his bill was over $16,000. Man, those custom V10 headers were a biotch...

Well, if you could do the plumbing yourself.. (maybe using pre-made bends and welding them yourself.. if you're handy with that kind of stuff).. I think you could do it for a few grand.. check out www.turbonetics.com for prices on new turbos, and wastegates and BOV's, and stuff..

Although, you need to include costs for upgrades to the fuel system also.. fuel pump, injectors, etc..

OR you could do it the cheap DIY way. But you'd better have the equipment, skills, and knowledge to get it done. I'm good on the first 2...and getting there on the last SO far for my twin turbo project I've dropped about $350; have both turbos, and the headers I'm using. I expect to spend another $200-300 on the various little crap.

but I can tell ya already...it ain't easy.

When you get to the third item, dude, you will realize that you can't use 2 different-sized turbo units in a turbo-per-cylinder bank system. You will also realize that for a few hundred bucks, the junkyard system will not last very long or produce much power. Just a warning. Good luck with your project. (No flame)

dude c'mon. there are numerous people out there running 10's and 11's out there on such systems, some are even daily driven and have lasted for sometime. Just cuz you're used to doing everything the proper way, doesn't mean it's the only way. no flame

Hey Steve (TTA850) did you see the complete TTA engine trans turbo kit in the classified for $5000. That looks like a good deal.

Yeah I saw it,I've delt with this guy before(I bought a TTA engine harness)and he's pretty straight up so I'm sure it's what he's advertising but I already have the GN motor and it's on it's way to the machine shop.Although it would be the perfect thing for someone on here that wants to get a turbo in their car.GMI Fast is talking as much as $10K,well here is a drop in turbo v6 that will easy go mid/low 11's for $5K.

Yeah, TTA850, I also said $5000 low end. Also, my prices are for a custom setup starting from scratch for a SBC, which is very labor intensive. Not a Buick V6 system. Obviously a mass-produced turbosystem would be much cheaper. I suppose if he wanted to do a pain-in-the-butt V6 conversion and use readily-available parts he could. But his exhaust would still sound like a 2.8 Beretta...

Yeah but even at $5000 to do the small block I think the v6 is still worth it.For one thing the $5000 buys you a ready to go set up including tranny and the engine/trans combo will easily shave 100-150lbs from the car.

Look,I seem to hit a nerve every time I say get a turbo 6,and I understand the need and want to do it with a small block but dollar for dollar the 3.8 turbo is one of the best motors to mod as long as your goals are no faster than high 9's,after that you would need a stage block.Plus after that you'd probrobly remove the a/c and your mpg would probrobly drop off to like 18mpg or so and it really starts to become more of a race car than a street car

Yeah, I am very familiar with Turbo Buicks. My TTA had an engine by ANS Performance, and Gary Oswald's shop is also here in Chi-Town. My friend Tom Lorek ran 9.60's with his old NMCA T-Type back in 1992-93. How do you guys get rid of the 2.8L Beretta sound? My 3" Flowmaster didn't sound too bad, but I sure needed my V8 car back in a hurry. God, I hated that 2-valve pushrod V6 sound...

LOL yeah that 2.8 Beretta sound.Well,to tell the truth one of my TTA's has a Flowmaster on it and it does have that sound,I still don't know why people put Flowmasters on these turbo 6's?Flows work great with an exhaust that has pulses but a turbo car has none, just a constant stream and straight through designs are more powerfull and quiet. You can't even hear my 11 second car when it's running, sounds quieter than stock with the Dynomax, and the ATR's are proven 99% as free flow as a straight pipe yet are amazingly quiet.

I got the ATR system on mine and I like the sound it makes. I just like to be different than everyone else. I also have 2 mustangs with Flowmasters and that's the way they should sound.
