Tuning a turbo?

Well I've looked into turbos before for a project(this a v6) basically I know I can fabriacte the exhaust and intake parts for the system, thats not what has held me back. What my question is what needs to be added to the system to run it up to about 8 or 9psi. A chip could do it I think but that would take alot of burning knowledge, I've heard a rising pressure fuel regulator would supply the fuel needed too. What all is needed in the system to tune it effectivaly?

Get/read Corky Bell's book, "Maximum Boost" - should answer many of your questions.

The same things that are involved in tuning an NA car, or a supercharged car. You need the right amount of fuel for the air going in. Simple as that. If you've got a MAF system, make sure the MAF doesn't get maxed out and it should take care of it for you. If you have a MAP system, make sure the fuel/timing maps show positive intake pressure (i.e. get a TTA chip in the meantime). Finally, if you can't do that, get a rising rate fuel pressure regulator which will add x psi of fuel for y psi of boost to get the right air/fuel ratio. It's a simple concept, but a PITA to do if you don't have the right equipment (DFI, chip burners, etc...)

Could you explain what you mean by making sure 'the MAF doesn't get maxed out'?

The MAF sensor can only support a certain amount of airflow, then it becomes a restriction in your airstream. Just think of the gobs of fast-moving air trying to pass through the screens and get measured at the same time...

I think what he meant by MAF maxed out is that there is a maximum ammount of air that that the MAF can measure... not nessicarily flow.

How can you tell what that amount of air is or how to prevent it?

I believe for our MAF unit, it maxes out at 255 grams of air per second.

There was a thread on this within the last month... you might want to do a search.

z28maniac,
If you are still using the stock ECM too control your engine, you will need a scanner to read the MAF output, you can use something like Auto X-ray, Diacom, or Ease scantool....
Hope this helps ya,
later,
