Carb and turbo setup

Will a turbo work on a carburated 350? Edelbrock 650 carb, performer intake, ported heads,I think these have the large valves, 4 bolt mains,I think around 8.5-9.5:1 compression and maybe 290/290 adv duration 222/222 @ .050 and .447/.447 lift cam. With TH-350 Trans with stage 2 shift kit. Stock converter.

Yes. It will work with carbs, EFI, mechanical FI, gasoline, diesel, and alcohol.

It's a bit harder to do with a carb but it can be done. You have to buy a kit for the carb that basically inverses everything inside to work on positive manifold pressure instead of vaccum.

I would not run turbos and carbs together. They will work, but not that well. When turbocharging with carbs, you can either do a blow through or a draw through setup. The problem with drawthrough, is you have a long path for the air/fuel mixture to travel. During this long path, the fuel looses it's atomization. Fuel pooling can also become a problem. Engine responce will be poor, idle quality will suffer, and forget an intercooler. However, little or no modification is needed to the carb. Blowthrough is a little better. You have the risk of air/fuel mixture getting out of the throttle shafts. You could put seals on them. It would be better to build a box completely surrounding the carb that would carry the boost. Also you will have to put a variable fuel pressure device that varies fuel pressure with respect to boost. You will also need to replace the floats in the fuel bowl with solid foats so they dont implode under boost pressure. I say just go to EFI. Your cam is a little big on the duration. I would work if it has a WIDE lobe separation. If you want to get a GREAT book on turbocharging, Get, "MAXIMUM BOOST" by Corky Bell. I got it at BARNES & NOBLE. It is very thorough and technical.

I agree in the cam. Might wanna try about a 114 lobe separation angle to minimize overlap. Carbs will work, but not as well, EFI would be better. Also if you can find it, get "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes. Pair that with "Maximum Boost" and you will be "the man of great turbo knowledge"! I use both, and Im starting on a project of my own which should turn out pretty nice...

I'm having nightmares of the mighty 301 Turbo Trans-Am, pinging all the way to a mighty 17 sec 1/4 mi.

Back in 1988, my college roomate had a 301 Turbo T/A that ran 13.70's. Take that, biotch!
